Guess it's time to reroll then :p

Anyway, I'm kind of tempted to buy this, but then I remember I could just replay IWD or BG instead and I lose interest. Anything particularly intriguing this game does?

Honestly I'll need to get further to really give you a proper answer.

So far however I'm impressed, the character creator is detailed, not just in models but in your characters background and history with loads of options. Visuals look nice and the soundtrack is pretty great so far. Storywise I can't comment yet. Gameplay wise it seems pretty much the same as BG.

I dunno really, if your not for the game already I can't really say anything that can change your mind. I made my decision from TB's stream, I knew instantly I wanted it so maybe just go watch some footage and see what you think?

As Volsung stated in a post before, I caught myself thinking about the game from time to time during the day working or when I went out. That hasn't happen to me in a long long time in this brave new vidya game world, I almost forgotten that feeling. Spent 30 minutes in the making of my first char (nature godlike druid (hurr duur kill me now) that shapeshifts into a
bleidd :^)
, explorer (wanted mystic but no) from The Living Lands), and the beginning and first fights and events had me squeaking like a little girl. After that, it just keeps getting better.

In all seriousness, in the end it is your choice like Vincent said, but if you played and loved Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate and similar, you should really really consider getting this. For me, I think I have found the game that will keep me occupied until TW3, and the only thing that could topple this neo-oldschool experience for me could be the (potential) success of Torment: Tides of Numenera.

Why playing old games that you already know if you can play a completely fresh and new game with new characters, new quests, new stories, new...stuff.

It's like those old Infinity Engine games just more of it on at least a comparable level and in some areas (like graphics, user friendliness, UI, flexibility,...) exceeding them. There is acutally no reason to NOT buy the game if you like BG and IWD.

For in-depth stuff just read the various reviews. There is a reason why this game has a metacritic average of 92... ;)

Someone back there was asking about the "books"... The "collectors book" (kind of an "Encyclopedia" for the world) is totally worth your time. The "Cookbook" is total garbage:p Dont waste your time with it unless you are Tim Cain's biggest fan in the Universe... There are better recipes in this forum, for the Witcher fans. :)

Really interesting game. Cant say much about the story, I have a feeling it's not gonna be groundbreaking, but it's gonna be cool. I think the best way to progress though it (at least for me) will be to take it easy and go slow.
I am much worried about the characters in the game, preetty sure we wont find people as memorable as Misc, Viconia or Edwin (Baldurs Gate II), but again, you cant have everything... :p

This has been a very good investment. :) And I only can fantasize about the masterpiece that Torment will be.

I got the game... too! I am loving it so far and it has tough decissions, like the witcher in my opinion. Too bad I am not getting rekt by 5 wolves that eat my party, but I heard people avoid that group of wolves and press on.

@Piluso = Jack_in_the_green?

Regarding BGII, I think one of the reasons it is considered so groundbreaking is because there was really nothing quite like it at the time. It did everything and it did it all very well. But individually, the story is not that good (similar to D&D modules, some clichés), lots of combat, not enough skill-based interactions, and so on. Also the characters are fine, but not *that* great overall. Anomen is a total turd, Nalia is largely forgettable, Viconia fulfills the sultry female role, and while Edwin is a hilarious prick he's not someone you just can't forget. And this is coming from a huge BGII fan. Minsc and Jan are pretty unique and memorable, yes. PS:T has better characters I think, such as Dak'kon, Morte and Ignus.

It's hard to come up with truly original and memorable characters in a fantasy setting, now that almost everything has been done. I'm just hoping PoE's characters will at least be somewhat interesting, not the embarrassing mess of NWN2's original campaign.

Just met Aloth, seems OK so far and not a walking cliché.

Also is it just me or the voice acting in PoE is kinda... bad? Sounds cartoonish.

I read a few reviews and so far I think the Escapists is the most informative. Whatever you do, don't waste your time reading PC Gamer's review. The whole review is just telling you things you can learn in the first hour of playing. They literally spend the first 6 paragraphs describing the character creator...

This is a quote from their opening paragraph.
Almost an hour had passed, and I was still on the character creation screen.

I don’t know how long I spent creating my character in the end, but it was a long time.

Then you might enjoy this one: http://www.denofgeek.us/games/pillars-of-eternity/244964/pillars-of-eternity-review

And the German reviews are quite well written as well, for example the Gamestar one: http://www.gamestar.de/spiele/pillars-of-eternity/test/pillars_of_eternity,48834,3084353,2.html

My Hearth Orlan Cipher is level 4 now and has a group of 4 other adventurers. At the moment I am liberating my stronghold. I still had no luck finding a blunderbuss - guess I have to look in bigger settlement with better equipped merchants.

The gameplay is stellar. Haven't played an infinity engine game in a while, but the things Obsidian added to speed up the gameplay are doing well: Like fast mode, seperation of endurance and health and how spell memoration works.

My rather intelligent Moon-Godlike fighter is going well until now, the silver tide ability of moon godlikes comes handy.

My human paladin is progressing quite nicely as well. Too bad that there is no rogue companion. So I had to make a hireling for that purpose...

I'm making nice progress. I've pretty much cleared the first town of quests and went through that optional dungeon there as well. I also completed my goal of murdering that damn bear (you know the one) with a Ranger hireling I created.

I haven't played as much of Pillars as everyone else here, but I'm loving it so far! I've gotten as far as visiting the first town and I recruited two companions so far.

I love the amount of detail in the paintings/graphics. It really makes you realize that having two-dimensional visuals like this actually has an advantage because they're able to convey more information to player through the visuals themselves. To put it in simpler terms, it enhances the immersion. The music is really great as well. It's not super epic or anything. But there seems to be a fair amount of variety in it and it sets the tone well (which, again, is just another way of saying it enhances the immersion.)

I rolled a female, Barbarian, Death-Godlike, from the Deadfire Archipelago whose background is being a Slave.
View attachment 11863

I named her Kerrigan, because I thought it was highly appropriate :p

I'm not sure whether I did my stats right. I emphasized the recommended stats for my class, but I read some things that said Constitution isn't that good of a stat. So I'm thinking I should've taken stats away from Con and added them to Mit, Dex, and Int instead for increased DPS.
There is also a possibility that a Fire-Godlike is a better min-max choice for a Barbarian class and more appropriate from a lore perspective (since Fire-Godlikes are highly revered and feared in the Deadfire Archipelago.) But I'm not sure that I want to reroll just to fix those things.

@Scholdarr.452 I didn't have time to read those reviews you posted but I might get around to it tomorrow. I will also need to look for a decent translator online (does anyone know of one?) Naturally, as an American raised with an egocentric worldview I was shocked to discover that other languages even existed  (just joking...)

I thought it seemed suspiciously bug free for obsidian. I should check my stats but I think I'm in the habit of drag & drop equip and I'll just be careful.

Well, why not just use drag-and-drop instead until it's fixed?
