Nice thing.

" If you’re wondering what games Stadia will offer, there isn’t much info available yet. But Google did announce that the first Stadia title will be Doom Eternal — the fifth installment in the horror/sci-fi first-person shooter Doom franchise."

So BGS is involved too? Arent they going mobile direction.

CDPR gotta hit GTA, is what I gotta say. These are freaking big moves.

If they can make an FPS like DOOM Eternal work with Stadia, it's going to prove streaming games is more than doable, at least for someone like Google. I think they didn't pick DOOM as their first game for nothing :smart:

We will see, this might be biggest move game industry has seen yet. Looks like EA's Apex Legend is involved too. Ubisoft too.

Hopefully Steam gets a slice of this Stadia thing with Steam Contoller. Or are they gonna put Valve out.

Btw, for me traveling is rehab from gaming.

Indeed. They do touch a bit on that at around the 39 and 49 min mark, i'm no expert but they do seem to address something very close to what you wrote.

No, they don't, that's about their own hardware, not intermediate network hardware that may be between you and the data centre. you will always have to connect across those other networks (hence inter net) unless you happen to be next door to the data centre. which most people are not. the second time stamp is them trying to obfuscate that problem by putting MP servers also in the data centre. which does not solve the problem of your connection to that place and the other peoples hardware connecting you to it.

If google manages to deliver an imput lag comparable to the one on consoles (as said by digital foundry) everywhere and not only in big cities, then it's just a matter of price and library.

If all pc games go there (= all third parties), at the right price in 5 years no one will buy consoles anymore and pc gaming will be reduced A LOT (think to everyone who has a middle-low end pc, the vast majority of people). At that point I see sony and nintendo becoming simple software houses.

Imagine $30/month and you can play at every single game on market, on your pc, tv, smartphone. No need to buy hardware, install, patch and optimize anything. Open chrome and start playing.

If they do things right, we'll have different prices for different number of available games, and the chance to choose between having a classic subscription (like netflix) or to buy single games alone.

I also see a lot of streamers moving form twitch to youtube. The possibility to join a streamer on the fly and the fact that a single platform can unite everyone (most user friendly thing). I personally don't follow any streamer like a lot of X-gen people and millenials, but several millennials and A LOT of the iGen guys watch streamers on daily basis and we can't deny that the market looks at them right now.

The only thing I now right now, and I'm sure about that, is that PS Now has just been killed. It's already a pricey and shitty service, google will put it 6 feet under ground.

It might be as well a bye bye to exclusives, which I hate so much nowadays. Unless you have a shitty internet connection, why would you buy a console anymore? So sony will have to let everyone play their games if they still want to make money.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. My excitement towards this particular approach is not so much it's accessibility, but its potential for games development. It's basically a supercomputer that can only grow without being limited to its physical presence on the player or developer location and/or ownage.

Well, technically, you don't own many of the things you buy, you're just given a license to use it, especially when it comes to software.

Should CDPR do Special Amazon Edition? Just to show they are on the radar or go figure.

You still buy, not rent it normally. Stadia is a clear renting service though. Personally, I'm not interested in DRMed stores, no matter from Google or not. Google could make Stadia DRM-free, by offering games for download (Linux releases I suppose), alongside their streaming options.

The market will decide (in 5-10 years) if this will be a full replacement or just an alternative. If this will be more economically convenient than buy hardware+software, that's not much to say. IF.

I don't think it's a matter of control on what we buy, in this case, since you are buying the temporary access to a machine and it's library, you're not litterally buying any game or computer/console.

The cool thing is that google will upgrade it with time with no cost for users except for the subscription fee.

just for curiosity, you play only on linux and buy from no DRMed stores. Do they make enough games with this combo? I can't think of any recent AAA game that fullfill the criteria. It's not a critique and don't want to start a conversation about gaming industry, just curious about how many games can be played this way.

Google announced Stadia but has very little to say about it. Except it being an online game streaming platform.

Nowadays in gaming there are different target markets. Let me share my thoughts to them

PC Gaming:
Well it won't be their target market at all. Most of the PC gamers like to play their product on their system with as much performance as possible.
Modding is also a big part of PC gaming which is probably not possible on Google platform.

Consoles:
If a player values better graphics over playing the game directly from their console, then Stadia is a really appealing product.

Mobile:
This is probably their target group. If Stadia allows fluent VR gaming, this is were it'll shine. Instead of buying a Vive / ORift, just use your smartphone with Google cardboard and 3rd party Bluetooth controller.

We'll see how it turns out. It could also be a total flop like Google+.

I'm sure some will run to release games as streaming only. But others won't, which hopefully includes CDPR in the long term as well. So if CDPR joins Stadia, they'll likely either make sure CP2077 runs very well in Wine, or more likely will make a proper native Linux/Vulkan release. Either way it would be a win for Linux gaming.

I'm also interested in Google commenting how and if they are using Wine in their service to run Windows only games that weren't ported yet.

I can' safely say that I would never spend money on something like this. Always-online functionality is obnoxious enough. Paying (or needing to continuously pay) for a title that will be subject to internet speed, communication instability, server issues, player load, random disconnects for maintenance / updates / etc., on top of all of the regular bugs / glitches...and now I won't even have local files that I can use to troubleshoot my own issues?

(Walks straight through the marketplace, ignoring the incessant waving and hawking of several merchants. Finds a nice-looking coffee shop. Is grateful to leave all the noise behind.)

This tech already exists for quite some time now: https://shadow.tech/usen

I'm surprised to see such praise for this. Probably because a major company is pursuing this now.

I rather stick with GOG, no need for anything else. I just hope they get more high tier titles. But they already got Bioshock 1 and 2 and i think Infinite will follow as will many other great games new and old.

That's probably the biggest reason. If there s anyone that can support the tech and take it to new places it's probably Google and Co. Plus there's a lot more to it than just the streaming part, even now.

They also founded a new games development studio for that very reason.

Can't wait to see what they come up with.
