What I did was watched a film about witcher 1(about 3 hours or so) The main story in cutscenes. It was really good and entertaining, gave me a good overview on what happend in witcher 1.(cant post link since this is my first post, if you're intrested in the film just type in youtube, The witcher-movie version)
Then I played wicher 2, thats where i really started to liking geralt and all the characters.
I can tell you right now that witcher 3 would be much less entertaining and emotional if I wouldnt know shit about geralt and what he has been through.
From my view its essential to play ATLEAST witcher 2.

I reckon I messed up hard by not playing TW2 before TW3. I got so hyped by the reviews and me getting a new graphics card that I just jumped in to TW3. Finished it in about a week (yes, I played for many hours a day, and I didn't finish every side quest).

Now,
after the ridiculous ending (with all the NPCs I got emotionally attached to gone)
I have a hollow feeling of emptiness.
Especially after the poor handling of the Triss relationship.

Figured I might want to play TW2 since it has some Triss content (in case you haven't worked out already I've fallen in love with Triss), but problem is I've read the combat and general gameplay of TW2 is poor, so I feel like I'd be let down massively after playing TW3.

Also, I watched a ~30min video summarising TW1 and TW2 in some detail so I already know a lot of the plot points like choosing between Roche and the other guy, and the dragon princess thing. That would probably make it somewhat boring.

So, what are your thoughts (from people who have played TW2)? Do you reckon it'd be any fun for me to satisfy my thirst for Triss content, or would it just be a let-down and frankly boring after TW3?

EDIT: Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

The witcher 2 is probably better story wise than the witcher 3.

Great, only real thing I read was the combat was lacking but I'll suffer that to adventure with Triss some more :p

TW1? I swear I read the graphics (and parts of the gameplay) for TW1 were pretty terrible...don't quote me though, I just heard it from a video not recommending TW1.

But yeah, I'm glad people are in the same boat as me...I'm just hungry for content :p

Sadly I'm not the kind of person to play the game again a week or two after the first playthrough... I just would find it so repetitive when I know what's going to happen exactly and when I know every detail. Nothing new to discover or enjoy. Maybe by the time expansions have come out I'll have forgotten some of it.

Thanks, I reckon I'll buy it tomorrow then. I don't know if I can put TW3 in the back of my mind though, I was left...hollow by the end of it all. Maybe I'll play TW2 after a week or so.

Heheh...join us at the Triss thread where we constantly post pics of Triss and worship her :p

An update for everyone: I started playing TW1, I dunno if k can really get into it - just feels too clunky - I'll give it a chance for a few more hours, if I can't get into the story I'll move on to TW2. Thanks for the advice.

Due to your GPU upgrade, the best reason to play TW2 is that now you can play it in buttery-smooth Uber setting, instead of wretchedly choppy Uber Setting!

BTW, Triss is NOT a master race, as she is already a goddess, and why would one relegate a deity as a petty race?. ;^)

TW1 is great if you can get past the combat and graphics. Chapter 1 is a bit slow as well. However, Chapter 2 on is great. A few mods can also help make the game a bit better. There are mods for Chapter 2 for teleporting between two of the main locations so that you don't have to keep running back and forth to the ferry. Another makes you always win at dice poker (and even give you a ton of orens). I can't remember what else I used in my most recent playthrough, but those were the most useful.

bloede dh'oine........ :mean:

To me it already sounds like you've made up your mind that you won't like the Witcher 2.

If all you care about is Triss, you probably won't enjoy it since she disappears for a large part of the game anyway.

Honestly I could see how that made me look like I was being stubborn and had made up my mind before playing the game, but I just ask a lot of unnecessary questions :p

In fact, I'm pretty excited to play TW2. Obviously Triss isn't all I care about - I like enjoyable games that are fun to play and interesting like everybody else.

Sorry if I came across that way (and came across wrong with the "other guy" part - I merely meant to show the level of detail that I knew)

Heh, me too. Can't believe people have trouble deciding between Triss and Yenn. One of them is a redhead, easy choice.

Thanks, I'm in chapter 1 of TW1 and I'm not getting into it yet - I'll get those mods that you mentioned (if I can find them) and I try hold out to chapter2/3, see if I enjoy it.

The witcher 1 have a great story but have a lot of back and forth quests. It took me several tries to appreciate the witcher 1 combat system the funny thing was that the longer i played the more i loved it, geralt have some nasty moves in the witcher 1. here is the mod for chapter 2 teleportation.

regarding the witcher 2 there are some good mods that enhance the combat in my opinion Full Combat Rebalance 2 is the best, the combat is a lot less clunky, you can cast signs on the fly and the enemies are harder. it have some bugs due to engine limitation. and you will have to reinstall the game in order to remove it. i used it in 8 out of my 9 playthrues of the game.

By the way i always chose roche, just love this character.

The games are incredible hope you will enjoy them.

I doubt you were sarcastic when you said this:
"Can't believe people have trouble deciding between Triss and Yenn. One of them is a redhead, easy choice."

since some people actually decide who they like more [Triss or Yenn] based on the brunette v redhead preference.

Well I guess it can be more described as "kidding" than "sarcastic" but I guess it's hard to see when communicating by text - though as Kinley says, this is hardly relevant to the topic, sorry about that (and any misunderstanding).

So to get it back on track, I'm playing TW1 and it kinda sucks compared to TW3 but it's pretty fun and interesting - I mean it's pretty impressive for a game in 2007.

i played TW2 just before launch and as others have said it hasnt aged a bit.. and in some ways i like the graphics style as much or more than TW3. also, Geralt's movement is much better in TW2 in my opinion.

as for TW1, i only played a little bit of it.. but what ive played isnt bad, and the graphics for the enhanced edition arent terrible on PC.

personally, i plan on getting the books and doing complete playthrough of the full series. should be interesting to see how i view things by the end of 3 :)

Those who were, like me, blown away by TW3, should definitly play TW2. You get the whole backstory of other characters and events. It is also quite nice to play, however i do like TW3 much more :).
