Please add DLSS 5

Very cool.

Hi there, I've been playing Cyberpunk 2077 on and off since launch, and with all the talk about DLSS 5 finally shipping, I wanted to reach out and ask whether there are plans to bring it to the game. Right now the PC version supports DLSS 4 — Multi Frame Generation on 50-series cards, the Transformer model for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction — plus FSR 4 and XeSS 2.0 as of Patch 2.3. The upscaling side of things is already in really good shape, which is part of why DLSS 5 feels like such a natural next step rather than a big ask. For anyone who hasn't been following it too closely: DLSS 5 came out in September, debuting in NBA 2K27, and it's currently 50-series only. The big thing it adds on top of the existing Super Resolution and frame gen pipelines is 3D-Guided Neural Rendering — essentially a real-time model that handles neural shading, material understanding, and lighting estimation. NVIDIA exposes controls for it through the DLSS SDK, so it's not a case of the model just doing whatever it wants; developers still get to tune how it looks. That matters a lot for a game like this where Night City has such a specific, intentional visual identity. The reason I'm bringing it up specifically for Cyberpunk is that Overdrive Mode is still, as far as I know, the most ambitious path-traced mode in any shipped game. Per-pixel lighting and accurate surface response are exactly the parts of a PT pipeline that hurt the most performance-wise, and they're also exactly what DLSS 5's neural rendering is designed to help with. It's hard to think of a game that would benefit more. CDPR has also been out front on this stuff from the beginning — Ray Reconstruction launched with this game, DLSS 4 showed up in 2.21 — so it'd be great to see that tradition continue. I also can't help but notice that Edgerunners Season 2 drops October 20th. The first season brought a ton of people back to the game (and a lot of new people in for the first time), and there's no reason to think this one won't do the same. I'm sure the team has its own plans and schedule — I'm definitely not trying to tell anyone when to ship things — but if a DLSS 5 update happened to line up with that window, it'd be reaching an awful lot of players all at once, a bunch of them on new 50-series cards. Either way, it'd just be nice to see the game looking its best when the spotlight is on it again. If it's useful at all, my personal wishlist would be: Overdrive Mode first, since that's where the difference would be most obvious; then expose it as a preset next to the existing DLSS 4 options with CDPR's own tuning; and Dynamic MFG if it's not too much extra work. But that's just me thinking out loud — I trust the team's judgment on what makes sense. I totally get if this isn't on the roadmap right now, or if it's a longer-term thing. Just wanted to add my voice as someone who loves this game and would love to see it keep pushing what's possible on PC. If there's any update on whether it's being looked at, I'd really appreciate hearing it. Thanks for everything you guys continue to do with this game.

Moved your post to suggestions.

As long as there is no official announcement, we can only speculate.
I doubt it has priority though, as focus has moved on to the sequel.

Plus, performance wise I am sceptical as dlss5 can be tricky in that regard. Also, gpu driver optimisation for less common game engines like RED engine is usually a gamble, so adding dlss5 could end up to be way more problematic than it would sound in theory. But that's just my own take.

So yeah, no idea if it will be added. We'll have to wait and see.

You can mod DLSS5 it into almost any game at this point thanks to some talented folks with the leaked files. Unoptimized obviously with a hefty performance and latency hit. I got it working yesterday at 1440p ultra at 40-50fps on my 5070 laptop. I will tell you it's a game changer. Don't wait for them to get around to it.

I used DLSS5 manager with the optiscaler version. The Direct X versions where instantly crashing out.

What hardware are you running?

can i ask Why? Cyberpunk already looks amazing even in my old GPU, adding dlss5 can only make it slower without any improvement

That video actually demonstrates one of the main problems I have with this stuff - look at what it's done to Rita Wheeler:

This attempt at making her look 'more realistic', has actually altered her design in quite a dramatic way.

The first thing that most players probably notice about her is her synthetic skin - which is not supposed to look like normal, 'realistic' skin. That was a very deliberate decision by everybody involved with the creation of the character, and this has just...removed it. In addition to changing the way that she looks, it's also excised an important aspect of her character.

Also it seems DLSS 5 have no idea that cyberwares aren't clothing... There integrated to the body, not on top of it. On the top of the chest, it add some weird shadow like if her implants are floating above her skin :D

Yeah, CP2077 is all about artistic choices, not some AI slop. They better added Ray Regeneration and Radiance Cache to keep Cyberpunk at the forefront of modern technologies.

DLSS5 isn't AI slop... If it is, you have to consider all DLSS is AI slop, and it is just stupid. DLSS5 is another tool in the toolbox for the dev, that was badly presented and used by somes (typically if you put all cursors to max). Cyberpunk wasn't developed with DLSS5 in mind, so yeah, its use in mod can have bad effect.

...Which it is...

Quite literally that's what the DL stands for in DLSS.

Deep Learning Super Sampling.

It's literally an AI model that is trying to figure out what a game "Should" look like based on its parameters.

I've seen other uses of it (Such as the image earlier in the thread as well as some unbiased looks about what it does to some other games)

All it does is push every single game, regardless of design choices, towards some generic AI-rendered "Realism"

How much it does depends on settings and how many passes you put it through. But that's the end goal of DLSS5 to make everything into the exact same "Realism" because that's what it's designed to do.

This can be fine if the game in question is aiming for realism (With a few hiccups here and there when the AI gets confused about what it thinks it sees). A light pass to touch things up can add a bit more detail or smooth out some rough edges.

But for anything that is stylised, it's just awful.

For me there is an obvious difference between DLSS upscaller (or FG/MFG) and DLSS 5. Both are AI but...
> One one side, the DLSS upscaller still create pixels which doesn't exist on the original frame, true. But its main goal it to keep the "new" frame as accurate as possible to the original frame (not easy to see difference between a 4K native frame and a frame upscalled to 4K from 1080p/1440p).
> On the other side, DLSS 5 is designed on purpose to modifiy/alter the original frame. The difference between frames with and without DLSS 5 is more than obvious.
After, devs will decide if they want to use it or not anyway :)

@Taril You can stop to play video game if for you all AI tools = slop. Because currently, even if some will cry and scream about this, all developer (and not just gaming, I work in this field) already use AI tools (or will have to find another job). And like all tools, there is good and bad use (and currently we, devs or other, all need to learn how to use it, the current wave is still moving). And we need to stop judging associated technology so quickly (this go for the people who are fanaticaly anti-IA but also for who want AI in their toothbrush...). DLSS5 isn't "slop", it is a tool with some specific case of use.

@LeKill3rFou That's a good point and I integrated it in the bad presentation. It is not made for stylized game. But that's argument isn't "It's AI slop". It just the bad tool in this case.

Not all AI tools = slop.

All AI tools that are LITERALLY replacing hand crafted designs with generic AI slop are slop.

That's the thing. If DLSS5 was case by case just upscaling or polishing the graphics and doing so in theme with the creative decisions of the designers, then it would be fine. It's taking the hand crafted design and just enhancing it.

But no, it's trying to replace all that hand crafted and stylistic choices with generic "Realism" this being the generic "AI-slop generated "Realism"" the stuff that's plastic and uncanny.

I've no issue with AI tools that don't try to replace actual art with generic AI-slop. Like machine learning to improve how NPC's behave. Or even Gen AI to produce concept art (Only in the case where it's exclusive to concepts and not part of the final product).

AI tools are just that, tools. But when it comes to DLSS5 it's not a tool it's a design replacement. It's not worked with during development to co-exist as part of the natural look of a game. It's an additional piece of software the runs after the fact that tries to replace the existing graphics with new AI-sloppified versions.

This is also why I don't much care if it is added to a game or not. As I can just, not use it when I don't want AI slop replacing my graphics. Since it's a post-process that happens after the game is already made and functioning.

With the good setting, in the good condition, DLSS5 is just that. So you judge, without understanding. As too many people.

Would be cool if the tech is reliable early enough that cdpr can learn to implement it effectively throughout night city.

But because it's so intrusive and overides the art direction, I hope they don't implement unless it's very early in their process.

Earlier versions strive to:
1. increase performance
2. present original artist's intent

DLSS 5 is exactly opposite
