I have a related question. This is from the FAQ and mentions the DRM of the retail version:
While we are aware of some players’ associations with the SecuROM technology, the server infrastructure of its provider, SONY, gives us the highest level of confidence that registering legal copies will be problem-free.

http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/59895/The-Witcher-2-Updated-FAQThat was written before the whole mess with all of Sony's servers being hacked. Will Sony's current trouble prevent me from activating my retail copy of the game when I get it?

No, only PSN got hacked. And it involved a specific vulnerability on the PS3. Some hacker would have to exploit a different vulnerability to get into SecuROM traffic. Also, because there aren't money transactions on the SecuROM net, the value of hacking it is far less.By the way, thanks to the PSN fiasco, you all should know the value of never accepting an SSL certificate that your browser says is bogus and never using software that automatically accepts bogus SSL certificates.

Thanks for answering :) Sony's PC MMO servers got hacked too though:http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/05/sony-online-entertainment-hack/Is Securom completely separate from Sony's PC game servers as well? I've been really looking forward to The Witcher 2 (already have the retail version pre-ordered :D) so I'm really anxious about anything that might stop me from playing it.

SecuROM is developed/administered/run by SonyDADC, a completely different division of Sony. The recent issues with Sony's servers should have no effect on the activation of the game. (Whether the SonyDADC servers will be able to handle the big slam of traffic on release day is another question).

Okay, thanks :) I'm glad to hear that it's not part of Sony's game division. I thought it was, which was why I was worried.
