I've actually played it quite a bit on the 2DS to see how far I could get without spending money. It's freemium trash through and through, designed to gently goad you into spending money with sudden difficulty spikes that require either a massive stroke of luck or money to overcome. Apparently this will require physically going somewhere on top of that? So it's like Foursquare with IAP and magical monsters.
