Political thread ];->

:evil:I hope this won`t turn in flamewar, so please be polite and avoid disrespecting your adversaries here. use arguments. restrain negative emotions... I suggest to talk about various political issues here. Here, on the international board, we can chat about how different (or not) some issues look, from our local points of view.1.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DlVFKBwbuU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXmidPjQaE8&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6QmH-7fu68&feature=relatedNigel Farage...I just fell in love in this guy ;DI wish we had just a one politician, so cultured and outspoken. And he`s a libertarian - fresh air, that I crave for here in Poland.political scene in my homeland is dominated by two right-wing conservative parties. only difference is that one is pro-social populist and other consist mostly bussinessmen, lobbists and other crooks.left wing is really center, with too much religious blabber for liberals...far too much for left-wing.please give us some true liberal-liberal leaders, with a touch of social sensitivity..anyone knows how to clone Mr Farage ? ;)

How so, economy meltdown guess where the rich people put their money ah derr on gold, when gold goes up share prices go down . It's not rocket science some would say a degree in economics is required . No only one rule GREED has no limits.

nice. why cenzorship, my little big brother ? ;p if disputes like "best joke" "windows 7" general quizes ale ok, well...could you please clarify - what is basically wrong with it? I suggested cultured discussion and I am interested in forum users opinions is worldly matters. what is wrong with it? you could join in by telling us why are you pro pre-emptive cenzorship :beer:@ Ratbag - well it is sad, that income gap is getting bigger each year in many countries.I personally think it is a matter of ethics. each system has its pros and cons, and people and ethics make them good or evil.perhaps time has come for capitalism to reveal it flaws now. i compeletly understand it`s about freedom of trade, markets, but it also induces greed and makes people forget empathy in competitive race.as far as I know USA have very competitive society.but now it came to paranoia - more people will do anything not to be looked upon as "loosers", even if it`s about tricking oneself into believing in false assumptions, like using "political corectness" language with no reason for it.I liked George Carlin`s show in which he was showing some examples of it. like "i got a friend who happens to be black". I liked his straightforward attitude. pity he`s not among the living anymore.. =(

Discuss, not disguise. People typically disguise religion and politics in mixed company to avoid brawls occuring ;)To Cinarea: Basically what Seeker's saying is this. Politics (and religion) tend to be touchy subjects for some folks. Discussions of those topics can start off civil.....but experience shows that even if the initial posters remain civil, it's only a matter of time before someone else wanders in and starts namecalling, and then the flamewars start, and then eventually Godwin's Law winds up being invoked. Now, if a forum's willing to put up with that, that's one thing (another forum I'm on elsewhere online has a pretty active political debate section, since the webcomics it's connected to tend to express certain views). ....on other forums, it's prefered the subjects aren't brought up so that the moderators don't have to spend all their free time threatening to club people with fire extinguishers.Usually it's "safer" to discuss specific issues/events rather than just politics or political personalities in general.....though of course, even discussing certain events can get risky, depending on the issue. For example, a subject such as "What are the current worldwide economic situation's potential long term effects and risks for those countries within the Eurozone?" is generally less likely to result in a conversation that imitates Pompeii on volcano day than a discussion on the recent Gaza conflict would.

ok, but you see politics in a somehow limited way - like an eternal struggle between democrats or republicans or smth - and that is where flamewars start.so why there is no linux vs windows flamewar in a windows thread? it`s risky tooor best fantasy film. no flamewars, but the subject refers to the same - preferences.a person may be crazy about favourite movies (star wars vs star trek vs lotr vs....) or anything else, and act aggresive, when the idols greatness is questioned.still I do not understand why someone opinions on some matters may be viewed as more provoking than another - it`s still about preferences or opinions. extra pre-warnings creates a specific atmosphere..well is it a camouflaged suggestion that people here can`t discuss in a cultured manner? I hope not.it is mostly the way HOW one expresses his opininos, that leads to unpleasant situations, and - such things happen mostly on the popular general sites, where all kinds of trolls roam.I considered members of the forum mature and reasonable enough, to post this thread in the first place. I also wrote some suggestions of how I see ways of discussing things here. as for the old sayings - sorry, for me it`s just an excuse of a true argument. it was not nice to me to see a red warning post suggesting openly the thread may be locked soon. it is kind of a thread sabotage to me ;p wouldn`t a PM be more appropriate? one can always lock&remove,why suggesting that when nothing really happens?anyway, eot for that.new president of the usa - the way americans see new presidents is rather scarry. I don`t understand such an enthusiasm. a president looks rather like a popstar now, a hero, a leader. but it`s not him making decisions - thats how I see it. the influence of his cabinet, advisors, lobbies...each of them plays its own games. and most hopes are in him, it seems people need figures of authority, idols - more than anything else.I look at it in comparison to switzerland. politicians are ordinary people, someone you can meet on the walk, in a shop, train...also they have couple of referendums each year, when citeizens decide about more important things. it`s a democracy closest to the greek ideal, I think. and you? =)

I'm mostly going to stay out of this thread to avoid annoying the admins. Feel free to send a private message if you'd like to discuss certain points, though. However, on a couple points....

First of all, let me note that the enthusiasm level seen for Obama's inauguration is generally _not_ the rule. Noting this here as folks tend to forget, or never watched prior ones to compare them to. ...for example, I recently had to correct someone's "OMG! Obama got out of the limo and walked part of the parade route! No one else would ever do that!" mistake by pointing out that Carter started that tradition (well, actually just brought it back. One of the early Presidents walked to the White House, but that was long before the formal parades), and every President since has followed it (exception: Reagan rode in an open-backed car for one of his inaugurations due to his age, and the second parade was cancelled due to weather). Similarly, at college there was a student babbling about "and they got Bush out of the White House in, like, two hours! I don't think they usually kick them out that fast!" White House staff, _every_ inauguration day, has a set moving schedule. They have 5 hours to move the prior first family out and the new one in.Yes, there's usually the big parade and the assorted official balls and dinners afterwards. But you don't usually have people being interviewed going, "I sold my house and quit my job so I could be here! I had to be here for this historic occasion!" ...to quote one columnest, "It's like some of these people don't seem to think the event will actually occur unless they're personally present."To be honest, the cult of personality around Obama strikes some of us as a bit creepy. Particularly when you've got supposedly neutral reporters making statements like "If you're in the room when Obama gives a speech, and you don't cry, you're not a real American!" or "...and look at that flock of seagulls swooping over the crowd, as if the birds themselves are coming to see Obama's historic inauguration!" ::) ....the Greek temple style stage at his nomination speech and the merchants selling 'Saint Obama' candle holders (ex: http://lastrow.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/obamavotive.jpg ) is not helping with the creepiness level.
I look at it in comparison to switzerland. politicians are ordinary people, someone you can meet on the walk, in a shop, train...

The difference is, that the US President is basically America's equivalent of royalty. Elected royalty and for only a few years, but royalty none the less. ....plus every time a US politician starts winning "which candidate would you like to go out for a beer with?" or "which candidate is most like you?" surveys, the media-types at home and in Europe tend to start up with the "This is idiotic. Americans shouldn't elect someone based on whether they'd want them for a neighbor" editorials.
also they have couple of referendums each year, when citeizens decide about more important things. it`s a democracy closest to the greek ideal, I think. and you? =)

Well, that'd depend on which Greek ideal ;) Usually Athenian is the one mentioned, of course. But several of America's founding fathers suggested looking to Sparta for ideas as well. ...plus America isn't a Democracy, it's a Constitutional Republic.

When Politics or Religion is involved, things can and do get real nasty real fast. As a Moderator on another forum. I can tell you this stuff is Verbotten. Now I have to agree with the person who started this thread in that, when things such as Windows is discussed, it can get out of hand as then you have the Linux and Mac fanboys or girls, get in there and stir things up. In My case, it is usually the PCWorld Bot that will dump an article in there that invites the kind of stuff we can control if it is just a human poster ( we'll ban them if necessary). PCWorld is a U.S. Magazine that has a forum ( we have an International membership to a degree) with a forum. The PCWorld news bot tends to put articles out that brings out the trolls and give us Moderators a major headache. I know poeple have feelings about their own Governments, I sure have plenty about the U.S. Government. :D I don't have any particular feelings about Governments outside out the U.S. though, except for maybe North Korea, Cuba, and China ( Repression of the people mostly). Anyway, The subject is best avoided in the forums unless it is a forum specifically designed for that kind of discussion. The intentions were probably good though, but the members being as they are ( Good bunch), stayed away from this thread.
