(Possible Spoilers) Old Friends Side Quest?

Can someone fill me on how to activate this quest? I'm kind of starting to think that this may be one of the quests that is lost at the point where you enter the isles of mists... All I want to do is play Thaler in cards and I can't figure out how. It does give me the option to play cards with him in the Seven Cats inn.

For me in my playthrough, I found Thaler after doing the Deadly Plot quest, but if I recall from reading , Deadly Plot is one of the quests that will auto-fail if you enter the isle of mists.
