Why get an overpriced 980 ?
I'm gonna wait for 780 ti price drop, and sli two of them together. They are going to outperform the 980 big time, and sli also helps with physx.

I would like to actually see the 980 in action and see how much it'll cost before calling it disappointing and overpriced. Also I would definitely go for 980 instead of 780Ti if they perform about the same since I'll be playing the game @ 1440p and that extra memory would be a safer bet future wise.

Also let's not forget that GTX 780Ti was released roughly 6 months after the GTX 780 so it's possible that the Ti model is released at a later date. I''m crossing my fingers for early next year.

The GeForce GTX 980 is expected to start at US $599, nearly the same price as the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. The GTX 970, on the other hand, will start at US $399, danger-close to cannibalizing the GTX 780.

If the difference is one or two shader modules for an additional $200, yeah, the price-performance will be all in favor of the 970.

I definitely agree on that, with the top GPU (like all top products) you're also paying for the exclusivity of the product because it's the "top one", very rarely a good deal.

Will be interesting to wait for the actual in-game benchmarks, driver optimizations and new releases such as (maybe, but seems so) a 980 Ti for the enthusiasts. Seems that 970 and 980 will be good upgrade for non-700 owners, but if the difference (with 770 and 780ti) is confirmed to be this "not-big" 700 owners could definitely skip this generation and wait another year

Hey guys,

Could you help me? I'm thinking about building a new PC for games, that will come next year. Like Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, and I was wondering if I should get GPU from the GTX 700 series, or wait for the new 900 cards to be released?
I was just wondering if the 700 cards would be able to handle the new games on very high settings.

A high end card from the 700 series can probably still run it at very high with all the bells and whistles.

Well considering the 900 cards are looking like they won't be that much of a jump over the 700 cards, I'm sure a high end 700 card will be just fine.

That said, if your current PC is still working fine, and you don't need to upgrade it early for anything coming this holidays, I'd just wait it out till January/Early Feb. Gives time for all the kinks to be ironed out of the cards and drivers, also there might be price drops on the 700 series or revised 900 cards with more VRAM/Coolers/Ti versions etc.

I have a Gainward GTX770 Phantom with 2Gb DDR5 ( base-clock: 1150 MHz, boost-clock: 1202 MHz, memory-clock: 7010 MHz), Corsair 8 GBs DDR3 RAM (1600 MHz), and an Intel i5-4690 CPU (3,5 GHz). I never overclock: I go for stability and durability instead of performance.

This rig should run The Witcher 3 and all coming games I'm interested in (DA:I, Mad Max, ME:SoM etc.) on High settings with a stable 40-60 fps without a problem. So, for now I'm not planning to buy a new generation GPU. I think I will skip the whole 900 series altogether and will invest money in an nVidia Geforce GTX-1000 series card 1, 2 or 3 years down the road. I'm not an enthusiast. I like to enjoy my games, but ultra settings and 60+ fps is not that important to me.

With 780 TI (faster than 980) or 780 ? No problem :)

In my vision you MUST wait for 900's to be released and a couple of months further, because you will have a better idea of 900's capabilities and a little drop in prices for the 700's. Really no point in speeding up the purchase. We are talking here but optimized drivers and in-game benchmarks are the only valuable things among any scores, anticipations and speculations

Thanks for the replyes :)

Yeah, I'm not planning on buying it right now. I will probably get it around february, or march. Maybe when the 900 cards will be released, the 700's price will go down a bit.
I was looking at a GTX 750Ti, not very high in performance compared to GTX 760, or 770, but with a good PC config, I think it would do just fine.

Me too. I'm curiously waiting for the results of the first tests and benchmarks. Seeing those specs I don't see why I should change my 770 for a newer generation card. The 780 also seems to be a much stronger card than the 980. So if I'm going to buy a new card it's either going to be a 780 Ti (if the price drops significantly: it's too pricy for its worth) or a GTX 1000 series.

I'm not a devoted nVidia fan, though I always owned nVidia cards (they are quite solid, but expensive). I'm asking those who owned cards from both brands (nVidia and AMD): does it worth trying an AMD card? I'm thinking about buying one instead of a nVidia card when the time of my next purchase comes. I can't decide really.

Well, ATI used to provide more bang for your buck. Not sure if that's still the case. I've been using AMD cards for a few years now and I'm quite happy with them. What I usually do is compare prices and tests and try to figure out what gives me good performance at a reasonable price and just go with that. I don't really care about brands.

Yeah, I'm thinking about giving it a go. Usually all I see in forums concerning the topic is people from both "camps" go at each others throats, arguing or fighting about which brand is better. That's not very informative and productive. I've checked a few tests and as far as I can see both brands have their strengths and weaknesses.

I'm not a hardware enthusiast or a hardcore gamer. I never overclock for instance (I aim for reliabilty, stability and durability), neither I buy the highest end products with extra features which I could not really utilize or take andvantage of. I'm an avrage gamer who uses his PC for his work and entertainment at the same time. So I usually buy products which suit my needs and let me have a great gaming experience, but I never cared about ultra settings or very high fps or extreme resolutions (for me they do not make the overall experience much better, of course they're always a good bonus if I can make them work). So I'm not biased towards any brand or any type of hardware.

The most important thing to me as of now is to be able to run games like The Witcher 3, DA:I etc. on high settings with a stable fps on a reasonably good resolution: 1360x768 or 1080p. I never play online shooters or mmos. I'm all for good stories. So I'm ok with compromises when it comes to graphics.

There are no official benchmarks out yet, none. The leaked ones don't even indicate which card is being benchmarked. Where are people getting this information that the 780 Ti, let alone the 780 are more powerful than the 980?
