PS4 will require subscription to play online multiplayer.

You can read the article here.

So, if CP2077 winds up on PS4, will you pay extra for the multiplayer experience?

Im Glad this happened.PS plus pays for itself very quickly. If your a Plus member at PS4 launch you get Drive Club,Outlast and others for free. You can still get online or buy and download games without PS plus but no discounts.Plus you can still play online without PS plus as long as its a F2P title.(For example SONY said you can play Dc Universe,Warframe and Planetside 2 without PS plus.)

That's not too bad. Hell, I pay about that much on PC for...wait, I don't pay anything at all! Lolololol!

No seriously, I pay more than that for Spotify and if the service delivers, less than $5 per month is chump change.

It's not great. PS3 users hammered Xbox people for years, righteously, because the full functionality of their games was locked behind a paywall. That's kind of B.S. Sony has not been clear on which games will or will not be free to play. They gave two examples that I've seen so far.

$50 a year isn't much - now. To some people. Small bills start to add up into larger bills, though. You're already paying $60 for your games, more for extra controllers.
The method Sony used to inform people, sneaking it in amidst the no-DRM cheering, was sneaky. That bodes not well for future pricing or services provided.

On a brighter note, I really enjoy the hypocrisy of the PS3 kids who laughed at 360 Gold subscribers jumping to the pay side of the fence at lightspeed.

Pfft. I never really played multiplayer on consoles to begin with. I'm much more of a couch co-op guy. As an outsider though, $5 a month doesn't sound like much compared to other services. I hear you get some discounts on games as well as free ones now and again. It sounds like something that could actually save people money. Either way, the service better continue to improve if they're asking people to pay for it.

Depends a lot on what it's offered =P

I mean, I do like the idea of playing with ppl, but again, it depends a lot on wether if that service actually works or not. And I've got quite a few experiences regarding "I pay for x, and x works like crap, because it collapses or kinda every five minutes" (Sorry about that "crap" word).

I read that as:

"News flash: multiplayer users get screwed by having to pay money to have racial epithets hurled their way by twelve year-olds, while single-player enthusiasts like you get to continue being awesome!"

Have to say, I'm remarkably okay with this.

Well. If I can play CP2077 Co-Op with a few..select vict-er-friends, (muwhaha...muWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!) I'll happily pay twice that. Five times that. So they have me there.

PS3 networks are actually..okay, the few times I've stopped in. A few kids, but not bad.

Now, the Xbox Gold..I've heard those. HOleyyyy.

Wait, that sounds like a pro-PS advertisement, doesn't it? SONY PAY ME.

+1. The point that 227 gave about the 12 years old kiddies was quite a GOOD one.

I've only had a few message wars in Street Fighter on GFWL. Wasn't a pervasive problem though.

The whole point is that it's optional. Like the camera thingie. You don't have to pay for crap you don't want.

Mind you, Sony being Sony, I'm still wondering if the "Yes of course you can resell used games that were sold as disks" will magically turn into "all games are now digital" after six months or so.

It's almost like everyone is colluding to make PC the dominant platform for this coming gen. Kind of a weird thing to see given that the PC has been repeatedly declared dead over the past several years.

We're clearly dealing with zombie PCs, here. Definitely explains why no one in the industry seems to have a brain anymore.

This is clearly MS's dastardly plot. Make a crappy console, SELL MOAR DESKTOPS! YAAAY!

Hm.

Hm.

Windows 8 sales have been crap. Not only low, but slow adoption rate.

Yeah, I think I remember reading that Windows 8 was selling worse than even Vista did. I wouldn't put that kind of logic past them. After all, the past couple weeks of missteps and stumbles have all been what they felt was fit to release to the public. Who knows how much worse it is behind closed doors when no one's watching?

I'm picturing untied shoelaces and unzipped zippers, with employees stumbling around the building half-drunk, mumbling incoherently about how overrated games are compared to The Price is Right.

Not in six months, but yeah, by the end of the generation most games will very likely be digital. And that's not a bad thing, I'm 100% digital on my PC and I never want to go back to disks. It all depends on wheter or not customers can trust Sony/MS not to fuck us over at every step. If not, then fuck them and their console bullshit.

I love the game boxes. They are trophies, of a sort. I miss the old giant boxes even more.

Hm. I'm typically a standalone kind of gamer; I rarely opt to play any kind of multiplayer / co-op with people. That said, as a console gamer, I'm rather disappointed in the direction Sony's taken with online play. If I want to casually drop-in and game with someone for a couple of hours here and there, I won't be able to do so on PS4, without paying $50 US / year. I could see the cost being justified if Sony did any of the hosting, but they don't.

While I'm sure the PS+ subscription is a good value for the free titles they give you every month, that's only of benefit for someone that has the *time* to play through all those titles. The last new game I bought was Saints Row 3, and I returned that within a few months. I'm *still* playing Gran Turismo 5, Borderlands, and Fallout 3.

As a console gamer, I feel that this is a punitive action. Viva la PC, I guess. =|

Source: reddit, so it could be wrong.

I'm dubious about the account for the reply, but on the other hand what it SAYS seems reasonable - that you won't be able to play if you travel to a different region.

But then I've been seeing people complain about the same thing on Steam for years. One of the inherent problems with region-locking.

(PS: By "reasonable", I meant "probably true", not "a good idea")
