Question about Zoltan (minor spoilers??)

I just finished the quest in Novigrad where you put on a play. After the play the characters meet up and Zoltan asks Dudu to take Ciri's form in order to see what she looks like. Regardless of whether or not you choose to have Dudu transform into Ciri, Zoltan quietly asks Geralt for forgiveness. It seemed like he may have done something in the past and was making sure that he and Geralt were still good. I'm not very versed in the lore, so I was wondering what the backstory is as to why Zoltan was asking for forgiveness.

Uhm, I don't think it has anything to do with the past. I didn't try the option where Geralt refuses, but if he does not refuse he reacts kind of badly upon seeing Dudu transform into her, he doesn't get mad but he get's upset instead. When Zoltan see's Geralt is sad he asks for forgiveness. Don't think there is any reference to the past there mate

Ay, here, it seems Zoltan is merely apologising for his suggestion, as it's rather a sensitive point for Geralt, and, upon reflection, Chivay realises this. Stout fellow, Zoltan, and a good friend.

It has nothing to do with the past, if you look at Geralt's face when Dudu transforms into Ciri, you'll see that watching this "fake" Ciri brings him more pain than joy, Zoltan apologizes to him because of that.

Yeah, the first time I did the play scene I choose to have Dudu transform into Ciri and it made sense that Zoltan was apologizing to Geralt for stirring up memories of Ciri. But then I did the play scene again (for other reasons) and choose not to have Dudu transform and Zoltan says the same exact apology even though Geralt wasn't visibly affected by the mention of Ciri. It was more in the way that Zoltan's voice actor delivered the line that made me think that perhaps he was apologizing for something that happened in the past.

Since we're in the topic of Mr Chivay, just wondering, I've finished my 4th Witcher book (Time of Contempt) and there still hasn't been any sign of Zoltan. Which book does he eventually appear in or is he an in-game character?

Next book, Baptism of Fire. (More is made of Zoltan in the game than in the books.)

Either choice Zoltan thinks he crossed the line and apologizes . The reveal Geralt is emotional and Zoltan senses it . The non reveal Geralt is emotionless which could be mistaken for anger . I think either way it is a powerful moment because it gives us an idea of Geralt's state of mind .
