questions about swords, bombs & oils

ok...so I'm in Act 3 but some stuff still confuse me.1. Swords: At this moment I have the Witcher's steel sword, Witcher's silver sword, a blue meteorite steel sword, and an Illegal sword, and i have three red meteorites so i can make a red meteorite steel sword.Witcher's sword:damage based on combat styleIllegal Sword:damage: -20%chance of critical effects: pain, bleeding, precise hit +30%what does -20% of damage means? that i'm loosing on damage?Blue Meteorite:damage based on combat style (is this better or worse than -20% damage or +40% damage?)pain + 45%disarm + 20%the red meteorite swords that i can buy:red meteorite #1:damage + 40% bleeding + 30%red meteorite #2:damage + 28%pain, stun, precise hit + 10%So which one of these swords is the best? should i buy any of those red meteorite swords? are r.m swords better than illegal sword & the blue meteorite? is the witcher's sword the lesser of them all?I can put the runes only into silver swords, and i have to have at least 3 of them, right?2. Bombs:I'm on Intelligence level 3 and have enabled bomb preparation, but i don't have any formulas. where can i find them?3.Oils:same question...i can only make necrophage oil, where can i find formulas for more oils?

Formulas you can buy from the booksellers and a few other vendors. You also get a few as quest rewards.I like the 3 Red steel sword - happy to keep till Act5 but you can find better before then.Silver I like 2 earth 1 sun rune for upgrade since it's one that is OK and you can get pretty early.

The swords are really a personal choice ... of those listed, i usually go for the 3 red meteorite sword, but that's just me. I never use the illegal swords, i just sell those for the orens ... I must confess I'm slightly confused by the damage rating as well, so i treat it as if it means that i'm inflicting less damage than i could -- but that could be completely wrong.bomb recipes can be purchased, but they are expensive. You can get some of them by chatting up the right people and giving them the right gifts (talk to the alchemist at the workshop and the waitress at the new narakort -- for her, you may have to try repeatedly, she has many conversation options) .. personally, i never use bombs, but some people like them. Also, if you find a bomb (and there are some), use it, then you have the recipeOil formulae are the same. They can be purchased from booksellers and antiquaries or given to you by someone for completing a quest ... do you read the books you find ? and do you search containers for stuff ? some scrolls are found that way too. Same as the bombs, if you have an unknown oil, save, then use it and see what it is ... if you like it, you now have the recipe ... it you screwed up, reload :)

How many of you use the Steel sword found on the Wyvern Island in the swamp?

I've never used bombs, I can't be stuffed wasting my orens buying the recipes. Similar idea with oils, but I might start needing them later - I'm not very far along yet. I've only ever had one meteorite sword, but that was in my last playthrough on easy, and I found it didn't make that much difference. But then, that's on easy. As for the sword from the swamps, I can't remember what it's called, but I put it in my other weapon slot so I could carry it around with me, but I never actually used it - I'm too used to seeing someone human and killable that I whack Q, judge the numbers, then charge right in or chuck a Swallow ;D But that's just me :)

If i do not yet have the meteorite sword in Act II, then i go and get Harvall from Wyvern island, pronto. If i do have the meteorite sword, then i grab Harvall whenever and sell it .Same with Gwahlhir in Act IV vs. the rune sword (2 yellow, one blue -- my preference), and then of course you get aerondightas for oils, i don't use many, but my two faves are Argentia (for silver of course) and Hanged man's venom (for steel), otherwise i use diamond dust or temporary runesi never use bombs because i concentrate on other talents earlier and don't usually get that ability and the ones you find are crap until act V, but you can get most or all of the recipes for free, so the cost is not an issue.and swallow is of course a must ... i always have lots of swallow (i ilke albedo swallows, but rubedo is good too) and cat.

hmm is kind of hard sometimes to decide what sword to use beause it seems its hard to know something or find out about a base dmg for a swordfor example a plain sword with no enchanment of any kind could still be better then one with +30%dmg if the +30% dmg sword have a lower base dmg.I have a 3x blur meteorite sword a and that harvel sword from wyvern island those to seems to do the amount of dmg when i for example fight a drowner ( know tha silver is better there) but i try to use my 3x blue metorite (this has no + dmg and then the harvel sword (with has +30% dmg and some other encahnment) and they was the same as far as how much they each hurt that drowner.can any say for sure that anything about base dmg on weap?that harvel is not that great is it?

All sword have the same base damage. THe only modification to base damage is what's shown on the sword as +damage and enhancements you add to it via oils and trinkets.

If you don't use a sword made of meteor ore Harvall is best stell sword until you get Gwalhir in Act 4. Harvall and later Gwalhir has valuable critical effects (disarm, pain and precise hit) "but only +20% (50%) damage". As this game isn't based on the usual "counting numbers" principle but offers many other effects in combat I don't mind if I don't get a numbered damage display ;)
