Quick impressions.

Okay. So, I am running The Witcher 3 at ultra settings, with hairworks and HBAO+. I'm averaging 45FPS with a single GTX 980. My CPU is an i5-2500K OC'ed to 4.5Ghz. First off, the graphics. They look really good for a game this size, I can see where they "scaled" back on some things, most notably the foilage, however it still looks really good. The water is the best looking water I have ever seen in a video game, and to get it looking so gorgeous in a game that is this big is incredible! The facial animations and textures of armors and weapons look outstanding! Some things have lower res textures, but that's to be expected, such as random mugs. Walls look great too! The only thing is that the quality of the textures of armors seems to diminish a bit while not in a cut scene, but I chalk this up to the position of the camera and the fact that I am playing on a 24 inch monitor and have somewhat poor eyesight. Overall I would say the graphics are great! There will mods to further enhance them in due time, not to mention CDPR will release more options too. Oh, and the lighting is well done. The sunrise and sunsets are beautiful!

What I am really excited about is the combat! It was never the strongest suit in The Witcher series, and while it was fun, it wasn't exciting. This time CDPR has nailed it, I think! The combat is exciting, it is intense, and you really have to take an approach to it in the manner of timing your strikes, dodges, parries, etc...especially signs! I'm used to The Witcher 2, where you can spam signs compared to this game. I really could not be happier with how the combat turned out. Combat is very fluid, and it is never broken. Geralt dances around his enemies making it seem easy and I'm playing on Blood and Broken Bones. However, Geralt can only take a few hits and that's it! Sometimes I have misjudged an enemy and leave myself open, one heavy slash and I'm down. Which is nice and how I like my combat. Bloody fantastic!

The story...well I haven't gotten far at all, probably as far as we've seen from most streams and I've got to say I wish I hadn't of watched any of those streams, as it lessened the impact of the story so far in. Although so far it is good. This was just more or less a quick impression of the games mechanics and graphics. I'm about to dive back into this game and I don't think I'll resurface for a long, long time.

So, it goes without saying: Thank-you CDPR! You've got a golden game here!

This game looks, sounds and feels fantastic. That's what I expected but I'm still totally blown away.

played for 3 hours and didn't have a single framerate drop. Had them permanently in Witcher 2. Though had a few bugs but just minor things. Game is fantastic so far

Are you using mouse and keyboard or a controller? Just curious how the mouse and keyboard controls are as I suck at using controllers.

Re-post things I've posted elsewhere:

(I play on PC, MSI 970, i5-4670k)

I like combat in the hardest difficulty so far. I needed to position myself every second, to time my attacks well and think about what my signs can bring.

I don't like the lightning in White Orchard, the sunrise/sunset is atrocious and vulgar to me. Like lens flare and explosions. Lightning on hair, beard and foliage is mediocre. I feel like the game is pouring butter in my eyes, that's not good at all.
I don't agree about water, I've seen better in many recent games. Watch Dogs had amazing water for instance (but you couldn't go underwater though).
Textures are ok-ish.
Loading screen is really quick on PC in my opinion, amazing work.
Overall a well-optimized game I'd say, at least compared to most games I played recently.

The card minigame is surprisingly good. Glad they got rid of Dice Poker.

I spoke to 3 people (a tavern owner, a scholar and a "vagrant") and I'm already hooked to the world. Dialogs are very well written, sometimes full of humor, melancholy, wit, hiding meanings. I'm already attached to Geralt because of some very moving facial animations in the beginning of the game. The world looks solid, nothing is... "cheap" so far.

A very, very good start. I've never been so eager to continue my journey since... well, some games I liked when I was younger in 1999-2003.

Bravo! My heart is doing a standing ovation.

2 hours in so far, did a few quests, and maxing it all out on this system at 1080p:

Amd fx8350 4.0ghz x8
EVGA Geforce gtx970 superclocked acx 2.0 4gb edition
12gb ddr 1600 ram
Game installed on a 7200rpm 1tb seagate hdd. System os and save file on a 60 gb intel ssd.
Creative soundblaster x-fi titanium fatal1ty gamer championship edition soundcard with driver package 3.3 (the one that came for windows 10 and is made by fans, but does include everything from drivers to extra's) just to have the best sound possible
Windows 8.1

Im really impressed by the game. I have set hairworks to everything, and HBAO+ enabled. The rest is at maximum while at 1080p.
Im not counting down the fps, but when geralt, roach and 4 wolves are around me its still very playable. And its so much playable that i dont notice the fps drop.
So, CDPR has done a great job on this! Keep it going CDPR!

Cant say anything about quests etc, since that would be spoilers, but that im very amused with this game, thats for certain!

I'm playing with everything on ULTRA (except for the hairwork stuff) with a Radeon 290 (overclocked heavily) and a Intel i7 4770K @ 4.3GHz and the game looks AMAZING, smooth as hell too. I played for about an hour or so and I'm loving it, I have work really early though so I'm gonna wait to get really into it tomorrow.

I'm getting around 50 FPS with everything maxed and hairworks enabled at 1080p. Couple things stand out - the menus could have really benefited from some color coding, but for once we can hotkey to any panel. Thank.Fucking. God. Overall, the UI seems better. Impressive customization and now we can tweak everything in the game menu. Mouse pointer works fine. The intro/tutorial is an easy, bucolic stroll into the world of The Witcher, so it's far more effective for newcomers but far less exciting than the last two games. Overall, a very pretty game with clever cutbacks here and there, but then I'm not playing on a high res. One disappointment - looking at the game control panel, it would seem we can no longer quick fire signs with one key. We have to equip, and then fire. Combat animations are really slick. Dodging works perfectly. Targeting is something I need more time with.

I've messed around with both and KB/M is more precise, at least to me it is. So, I'm playing with KB/M.

That screenshot does not look the water that I am seeing on my display.

As for whomever said Watchdogs has better water, I've never played Watch Dogs. Hence why I said it is the best looking water that I have seen in a video game. I don't expect everyone to agree with me naturally, as it is subjective to an extent.

I'm so overwhelmed, right at the beginning. I don't know what to do first, where to look next...

I limited the FPS to 45 to have a smooth experience with my GTX 750 TI ... and so far everything is smooth. My settings are a mix of medium and low... with high water quality for the awesome aard effect. :D

So there is no way to change signs without opening the radial menu? (pc/controller)
Tried everything but couldn't find a way, which pretty much kills any sign build I wanted to try out.

Just a question, how hard is death march difficulty?
Also are KB & M controls comfortable?

You can use the middle mouse wheel to scroll through signs and you can assign hotkeys, but those hotkeys only equip the sign. On another note, double tap to dodge would have been nice but I have it mapped to control and it works well enough.

Death March is balls hard for me at the moment. I'm level 2 and trying to kill a certain boss that I won't spoil and I keep dying xD. Also yes, M+KB is very comfortable (for me at least).

I'm playing with a controller and if I have to open the radial menu everytime I want to change a sign there is no way I will skill more than 1-2 signs (which sucks, because I wanted to play a sign build)

My first few thoughts:

1) In the first two hours, have had two freezes. Had to go into task manager and kill the process both times. Both times, they occurred while I was in a menu (character/map/etc). It's a little disappointing, as Witcher 2 was rock solid (while Witcher 1...for those of us who were around, was a huge bug-ridden mess at first).

2) Really dislike not being able to change some keybinds. Is there any good reason a whole slew of them have a lock icon and can't be changed? I swear CDPR has done this before, and then inevitably changes their mind and lets us change them later. I very much like to have everything within reach of my left hand, and never really understood default game bindings (prevalent in most games) that have keys assigned all over the keyboard. For now, I've created a new profile for my gaming mouse and put all the keybinds I can't change and assigned those keys to buttons on my mouse. Muscle memory (built up over mapping essentially the same UI keys in every other game over the years) is completely whack for now, but it's better than stopping and moving my hand to the right side of the keyboard.

Still, very glad to be playing the game. Still have absolutely no idea how to parry (skipped the tutorial; looked at keybindings to figure out combat, and parry being the same keybind as attack....well, presumably there's some rhythm component to it that I haven't figured out yet). So, combat is a lot of dodging and a lot of meditating afterwards for now.

Story is a slow burn, which I kind of figured it would be....that just seems to go hand in hand with "open world" games, but it's a lot better burn than pretty much every other open world game I've ever played. Personally, I would have preferred a tight script over open world gameplay, but I realize-based off game sales-that's a minority opinion, and I'm just happy to see the continuation (and conclusion?) to Geralt's story, and all those rather glaring omissions from the books finally seeing screen time.

Hmm I only played a tiny bit I still have to come to grips with the controls. Mouse and keyboard was just too annoying/complicated. But it did have it's advantages regarding the camera. Also sign selection is not working so well with a converted directinput controller unfortunately. Combat in general is a lot easier with a controller but moving around is better with mouse and keyboard. Though one annoying thing is that I keep running over herbs I want to pick up. It's a bit tricky because geralt takes multiple steps after I stopped moving him.

The tutorial session made me gasp at the bookfan service awesomeness. There is definately a learning curve to get to grips with the controls. That's just my quick impression.
