Re-crafting iconic weapons?

So if I decide to craft for example an Epic Chaos from my one and only Rare Chaos pistol, I then lose my Rare Chaos. This means I can never re-craft an Epic Chaos at a higher level, only keep upgrading it at higher and higher costs. Is this statement true?

Eventually I can craft a Legendary Chaos from the Epic Chaos, but this is then also a one time only craft.

This Crafting System is really confusing...
I dissambled my iconic weapons because other weapons were more powerful in the early game. Now I found out.. that you can't re-craft Items even though you own the blueprints. You have to own the weapon to build/upgrade your weapon.
