...I can see all the events that lead up to the second act of Assassin of Kings. Henselt, the Dun Banner, Nilfgard, the Upper Aedirn, Francesca Findebar, Scoia'tael.

Yep. That's why everybody who read and love Sapkowski's saga are crazy about the games as well. As a stand-alone story the games are great, but as continuation of the books they are simply superb.
And yes, practically every character from the games was either present, or mentioned in the books.
