I suppose it wasn't in your intentions, that you're not trying to create "The Witchmeme 3: Wild Meme" which so much people are afraid of right now, but you have to understand, that PR is a really sensitive thing and most of your community features intelligent people, that HATE those childish excuses for jokes called memes.
People were already afraid that "you're aiming for the Skyrim audience" (even though it was mostly reporters fault, for asking you to compare W3 to Skyrim over and over again) and you've just thrown more fuel into the fire. And on top of that it's possibly the most hated meme-joke in existence, who ever thought it was a good idea?
You say it's not that bad, that it's not important - it is. Nobody is asking your for an official apology, that would be quite dumb, but there needs to be a STRONG message that this is an independent game that doesn't cater to nobody, especially console casuals. You can lose a ton of interest over this.

And do not confuse this with a reference, it's a different thing. The difference is that reference only uses something as a point (might even be an older joke) and then creates a new joke on that basis. Meme is the same joke over and over again, just served in a slightly different way.
Amazing. Some people take games way too seriously. They are for fun, and the developers and PR people are also entitled to a little fun. Everybody makes bad jokes at some point, so give them a break.
