Actually, it's only cavalry officers that do that. And they all have different types of wings too.

I am making this thread to defend Nilfgaard, and i will post reasons to show why i think Nilfgaard is better than the Northern Kingdoms in the long run, so let's make a comparison:
- Both Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms employ torture, however it is suggested that the empire uses torture a little bit less,SPOILER ALERT: (making spoiler thingy not working from my PC for some reason, sorry) when Letho says they were just interrogated with no violence... as opposed to the guards who beat up Geralt while waiting to be interrogated...
- In war time both have done evil deeds: the nordlings, especially the Temerians have their standard procedure: RAPE, MURDER, PILLAGE, SPOILER ALERT: Look at woe to the vanquished quest, says enough about how ruthless northern armies can be, and Nilfgaad did executed civillians for the purpose of intimidation. however. they were somewhat limited. i could not find any evidence where they used total devastation, this is not much of a comparison as both parties acted reprehensible, however i belive Nilfgaard is still a bit, just a very small bit better, since they might go easy on places where locals support them, and in the case of northeners, look what they done at Loc Muinne if you don't save Triss, they go after sorceresses and THE SOLDIERS decide that ALL mages are traitors and bang, don't think it's like that with Nilfgaard, i think they might be a bit more controlled and driven by superiors motives than to rape, murder and pillage like the nordling soldiers...
- Now the big part, Northern Kingdoms are racist towards to elder races. Nilfgaard is tolerant towards them, and this is a huge + in my book for Nilfgaard, i mean for a medieval/primitive society to be tolerant towards others who are not like you, pretty much says it all!
- Nilfgaard has discipline, i mean sorceresses wear full body uniform and have a mandatory moral code, i know it sounds kinda opressive but i think it is marginally better than to let sorceresses walk around SPOILER: dressed up like a whore on parade day.
- Nilfgaard probably has better culture and are more civilised than nordlings, in fact, the northern inhabitants are mostly rude, uncivilised, illiterate, savage, superstitious, racist barbarians, SPOILER: Shilard mentioned in the prologue of TW2 that Nilfgaard brings their cultutre to the people and count Maravel states that Temeria faces problems with superstition. inculture and savagery!
- Emperor Emhyr has indeed innocent blood on his hands, but not as much as Northern monarchs, SPOILER: especially HENSELT, that guy was a monster!!!
And for my final argumet, The North is a WORLD HALF EMPTY, while Nilfgaard is a WORLD HALF FULL!!! While Nilfgaard does have many problems, it is still MARGINALLY BETTER, and I repeat, just MARGINALLY BETTER than The Northern Kingdoms, and i belive good change is much more likely to come from Nilfgaard rather than the North!!! Please defend Nilfgaard if there are more supporters out there, i will definetly side with Nilfgaard in TW 3!

Well, no they don't have either of those. It's just that it's less socially acceptable for sorceresses to get all fancy (some do it anyway though. Fringilla and Assire being notable examples). Also, they're grown-ass women. They can dress however the fuck they want.
Nilfgaard is police state like. Orderly but oppressive (it associates to me with imperials from Star Wars). May be they don't tolerate open racism, but they don't tolerate independent thought either. It's not better, it's also bad, just different.

Well, Nilfgaard is inspired by the empires of the past, not of the future. With Byzantine sun emblem, Habsburg colors (black and yellow/gold), and sort of Roman/Holy Roman (Germanic) Empire vibe of military units it is, I guess, a representation of the ultimate empire. Given that Poland did not have a good history with ANY European empire (Germany, Austro-Hungary, and Russia simply tore it into three peaces once upon a time), it is no wonder that Nilfgaard is not presented as a good place. It is presented through northern eyes, after all. But exactly as for historical empires, none of which was a realm of evil, and from other perspectives they may be seen as safe, stable, and even heroic, Nilfgaard is just Nilfgaard, neither good nor evil, a country with its own advantages and faults. I sure take it over Northern kingdoms any day, but I am from Russia, and with ancestors from Austria. So I just happen to like imperial way of life.
And yeah, in TW3 I am with Nilfgaard all the way.

Russia had a significant anarchist movement as well (see about Kropotkin). Also Russia featured the free Novgorod earlier. So while history there was heavily autocratic with imperial ambitions (either with tsars or Bolsheviks or where it's heading now), there were those who didn't accept that.
Empires of the past were quite different, so I wouldn't lump them all together into one pile. Some were less crooked, some were more. Some empires were clearly racist and backwards thinking (Byzantine empire for exmaple), while others were more progressive (empire of Charlemagne for instance).
