I choose you @Sarcen ^^

No but really. A friend of mine is a pretty capable dev and he loves reverse engineering. I could ask him to look into this, but he already stated that he is not that interested in doing this, because he doesnt know the w3 community. We'll see.

That'd be a very tiresome task, you'd need to sample and compare around 20(?) file formats, with having blank files made by editor as 161 version samples.
You'd need to make a batch converter for all of those formats, decompile the game, convert it to 161 to make redkit somewhat useful then convert anything you create to 162 and then still hassle with DLC mounting method to load in new content.

I doubt anybody has the patience and will/skills to do that within the withering mod community of Witcher 3.

I doubt there will be any major advancements past this point, there are no people with skills and the will to bridge remaining gaps. Even if it happened, it'd be very tiresome to use and only available to those who managed to get the tools because distributing them any further would be illegal and nobody wants to get sued.

Thus, as fun as it was, the story ends - we've licked the candy through a storefront window.

If this is the end of this journey (for now) then I want to say thank you to all of the people who were involved in this in any way. And to CDPR: Please! PLEASE! Just give us a REDkit 2. I would give anything for that!

Eh, ultimately the guy who made the leak is going to take an arrow to the knee for nothing - all he did was literally going out with a "loud" statement.
And by loud i mean, nobody besides this forum, single post on reddit and CDPR themselves knew about the leak. Thus even if he wanted to make some sort of flashy consumer statement - it was in vain.

Ultimately this thread can be locked now, i guess, unless we want to wait for official follow-up from CDPR (if there's going to be one) in order to have "formal" closure to this topic.

No need to lock it already. Someone might find something that completely changes the situation, so lets just wait a few days, okay?

the fact that the software does not work with the current build we have isn't necessarly the end of our efforts. sure we can't use it, BUT we already learned a lot about the Redkit the use works, and perhaps over time, we may find some more info through tinkering.
i mean, this thing got released barely more than 24 hours ago, and look where we got. i'm confident with time and patience, we may learn more info, that'll help us maybe create our Own asset editor (think of it as a @Sarcen 's Mod editor 2.0).
yes, the chances of that happening are slim, but as long as there's hope, we can't give up, not yet.
i feel this is just the begining of a long road.

Except the tiny detail that this thing is illegal to redistribute.
Surely - from experience no company will bother to go after people who got the files, one way or another. But it is illegal nonetheless.
If CDPR so desires, they can pick a person and persuade him to cease&desist, because he's working on files that've been obtained illegally.

Polite version is just asking - other option is a lawsuit, and believe me, gaming industry has seen many, many cases where AAA companies/publishers sued reverse-engineers. The fact that files themselves are not legal does not help.
Lawsuits are not just about right or wrong, it consumes your time and money, make a guess who has more of both a world-class company or average joe, the reverse engineer from basement.
It's a legit tactic, which has been used a lot of times by AAA devs to sue leakers/RE's even if they know that lawsuit is lost from the beginning, just because it's time/money consuming and stress inducing.

I may be overdramatizing, but this can happen and is something that everyone should keep in mind.

// Sure, in case of 99% of people in here, who obtained the files from nexus (thus being unaware of their origin) are pretty much covered in every aspect, especially since similar leak already happened and it was legal indeed as modkit was officially released next day. Thus you had no reason to doubt their legal status.
But for someone who knowingly obtains illegal files and manages to piss off their rightful owner < that's a very different case. I can't speak for other legal systems but in Poland, acting in "good faith" changes a lot. Whilst doing something illegal intentionally is a very strong argument against you.

In terms of dependencies missing, mostly it's NVIDIA stuff correct? Can't we just download it from https://developer.nvidia.com/gameworksdownload#?tx=$graphics_api,directx_10,directx_11 ?

if they did that, they would basically take a stance against modding. remember, their reasoning for not releasing the redkit was that they didn't have time to focus on it, not that they didn't want it out there. even if they are in the right, dmca-ing or cease&desisting mods doesn't send the same image as they have right now.
of course I'm not saying they absolutely won't do it, but I seriously doubt they would.

I seriously doubt cease-and-desisting in this case would hurt CDPR's image. The audience loves the game and everything CDPR does so why would it. Besides there were instances where some steps by CDPr could've hurt their image but it doesn't seem like it did at all.

of course they can do that, its their own right, its a leaked software never intended to be public, they would just protect their work

now obviously gaming website would make a alot of drama and clickbait around it and twist the story depending on their agenda and what would get the most click ( i will let you guess what kind of story would get them just that ), the mass cant distinguish between little details as to why they didnt release it to begin with and why someone who has the leaked files shouldnt distribute it , they would just see CDPR as the bad guys, and am pretty sure its the least thing CDPR want

so yeah, its a very delicate issue more than what it look, the fact that the leaked version is pretty much useless at this point is a relief somehow, as much as i want a working redkit, i would prefer that it come officially from them personaly, and not a leaked version surrounded by drama

also if my suppositions are right, such redkit version would allow us to edit stuff from Nvidia and umbra and other middle ware used in the W3, am not sure that you could do that without paying some form of license

i didnt use Redkit w2 too much to know exactly, what i know however is that it had some limitations, something like Sarcen editor tool open more files that Redkit W2 for example, at least for config/systems files

or maybe they simply had the rights to includes those middlewares in the older redkit to be used in a public version

Well, there is already a post by Burza46 that says the files have not been released by CDPR (thus they are not legal to distribute), and that they are investigating the issue. There is probably not much more to say on the forum right now, they try to find out who is responsible for the leak, and take down copies of the editor that are available on file sharing sites.
