Regenerating Health?

Hey guys, so this is no news, but I was actually surprised to see regen health in The Witcher 3. I only realized while watching recent gameplay footage (was that always the case?).

It's not that I wouldn't expect health to regenerate over time, but this was pretty fast, half the health bar went up in a few seconds.
I think eating, taking potions and resting (meditating) should definitely modify and speed regeneration of health up, but the cases I saw were way too fast.

Maybe it was just for presentation purposes, that is my best guess. If so, no problem.

But just to get to know the opinion of most of you, what do you think about regen Health in TW3 and where do you draw the line?

I honestly dont care about health regen that doesnt happen in a fight.
Otherwise many people will just stand there for 3 minutes, wating for their health to regenerate, doing nothing.
It´s much faster and less annoying like this.

Fair enough, only asking for your opinion :)

My personal preference is absolutely 0 HP regen (Both in and out of combat), and then you are required to activate a potion, meditate, food buff etc, to actually get some kind of decent regen. (Although this kind of thing is more of a preference for video games in general for me)

That said, I don't have a problem with a little base regen outside of combat. So even if you've got no potions or buffs, your HP can go from 0 to full in maybe a few minutes of not entering combat.
However during combat you definitely should not regen AT ALL, unless you have a potion active like Swallow.

Hopefully the ridiculous regen was just for presentation purposes, or even that being how easy mode works would be fine.

yeah, fast out of combat regen is just a convenience, it's not making anything easier. and here we can clearly see that it only happens after combat, not during.

I'm glad that it regenerates fast when out of combat, that way you don't have to just stand around for a few minutes before continuing your adventure.

Yes, as was in Witcher 2. They probably made it faster for demo purpose or now it regenerates faster out of combat and I favour the latter approach cause otherwise I'd just stand around till be became full.

I'm 100% sure that the super fast regen was for convenience during the demo: you don't want to see the player die while demoing.

In combat there should be no natural regen. You should get that from potions (noticeable boost), mutagens (small boost) and items (smallest boost). Outside combat there should be some kind of regen to avoid having to take a swallow every 3 minutes but it shouldn't be so big that you'll only have a 5 second downtime between fights.

Regen has always been difficult to get right in games with variable health. Because you can make it percentage based (Heart of Tarrasque in Dota) or based on absolute HP/s values which means you have to provide the player some kind of progression for that (Ring of Regen -> Ring of Health in Dota).

I really see no problem with regen outside of combat, it's a non issue.

I think that health recover is actually too fast, and it makes white raffard's decotion pratically useless.

Would you rather stand around for five minutes waiting for it to regenerate? The convenience of it is well worth any small amount of immersion lost. The only type of game i wouldn't like to see health regen outside of combat would be a survival game, and i've never been a big fan of those games

what's the point in slow regen? then you just have to sit and wait until your health comes back instead of playing.

It was fun if each of the wording in the poll were specific to each of the difficulty levels....

Yes, I do. xD
It's an RPG and I have to use potions, herbs, medicines to restore health.

it doesn't make the game any harder though, just annoying.

As logn as it doesn't happen during combat I'm fine with it. In other games it makes sense to have low/remove non-combat regen because there are usually a bunch of healing spells and other means for quickly mending after a fight.

Not necessarily. It'll probably go back to the W1 design of being an instant health pot instead of just increasing regen.

I'm absolutely against any regeneration during the combat. Slow and limited (not full) regeneration at rest is acceptable in case of the witchers :) But potions and meditation still must be a main options for restoring health.

I've always thought of the health (of the main character) in most games as more of a "pain tolerance bar", when it hits zero, your character either cannot take the pain anymore or the attack that takes away your last bit of health is the only attack that deals significant/lethal damage. But hey, that's just how I like to think of it.

The mattern is that I really don't care about this issue. I remember one thing made my game annoying in TW2 was the Kayran battle. I mean, anything can make a game funniest or annoying depending of the dev and the gamer.

What's the point of health regen potions in shorter fights? Then you can just win a fight and wait a bit until your health quickly regens.

See what I mean? There's a fine balance between these 2 extremes. You don't want the player to just chug potions continuously but neither do you want him to just wait it out for a few seconds before he can jump back in to the next fight, Geralt is Wolverine.
