Reviewing the full 35 minute Gamescom 2014 demo

Having now downloaded and watched the full 35 plus minute demo at 1080p/60fps, I think it deserves a more comprehensive review. Loved it! Looks great. Sounds great. Feels great. Special praise is due to the phenomenal art direction but also to music and sound design, both of which outstanding. With top notch story and characters, almost everything was above average. You all get a standing ovation from me, REDs!

The irony in having such a high calibre demo though is hitches and niggles will, perhaps disproportionately, stand out. Not that I find any of them a deal-breaker. And I do understand this is a work in progress, in fact an outdated build, and that some of the following might have been already addressed. Notwithstanding, the way I see it CD Projekt could use some constructive criticism.

On a side note, won’t go over Animation and UI aesthetics issues, of which there’s a fair number, since each have their own dedicated thread.

You're more than welcome to post your own take.

Assorted standouts and high notes for me:

1. The map. It actually looks like a real place, not something designers spent a couple of months coming up with from scratch. It's the first time ever I've looked at a game map and my disbelief was suspended. Very organic, very believable. Distances seem quite natural to me in NML. Not too crowded, not too sparse.

2. Forests.

3. That wooden aerial walkway in Novigrad is sheer genius, maybe not historically accurate, but all the more interesting for it. It also implies there's going to be a lot verticality within the city, not just within buildings themselves.

4. Love how windows are finally see-through. Nifty cool detail makes a hell of a difference, and it's a first as far as I can tell.

5. Mobster looks damn right amazing. For goodness sake, there are hairs sticking out of the bottom of his ill-shaved neck. He's an absolute triumph.

6. Witches. Love them. Nightmarish but somehow alluring. The scene where the sea-lioness-esque snatches Ciri is amazing. Once they've come out of the tapestry, their lines are fantastic.

7. Gran's lines and delivery are just near Shakespearian quality. So intriguing, her servility.

8. Kicks (and elbow strikes) are in and looked great.

9. Music is hypnotic. Battle music makes you want to slash, and slash, and keep slashing like a mad pagan.

And here's my list of quibbles:

Graphics

1. Some stuttering even in the uncompressed 1080p 60fps video.
2. Occasional severe pop in, for example at 2:33, where drying clothes materialize on the left, and 3: 12, where 1st floor window blinks for a split second. Possibly a texture pop in issue.
3. A few low res textures make occasional appearances, namely in the three witches, which otherwise look smashing.
4. Interior lighting is mediocre. In all the 3 locations we were shown, brothel, ladies of the woods’ and cave where the tree spirit dwells, things looked flat, almost immaterial. For example, in the entire scene with Djeekstra, the mobster is often casting no shadows while the knife never is. Tthere doesn’t seem to be any ambient occlusion at play. A let-down, not only because exterior lighting looks great but because the SoD trailer seemed to indicate otherwise.
5. Candle flames look too opaque.
6. The Ealdorman’s ear on the stone looks crude. Incidentally, how does the ear slip into the string when there’s no slit?
7. Gran’s long skirt looks polygon-ized. The E3 Microsoft demo had cloth simulation. Gran's eyes turning white is a visual cliché. Closed eyes would be subtler amd more powerful.
8. Magic fairy dust in the harpies’ nest is a relic from TW2. Needs to go.

Voice acting

9. When Geralt first meets the Ealdorman, his voice sounds funny.
10. Again, Gran’s VA is superb. But I don't fancy Johnny's. He's supposed to sound annoying, I know, but this borders on the caricature. His off-putting tone was perhaps accentuated by his l Oliver Twist's speak. The subtle balance voiceless Johnny exuded, the wonderful play on expectations - a boy who’s a godling - was tipped too much in favor of pure adolescent demeanor.
11. At first, didn't care for the Ladies' VA either. In house, a tad overacted. But It did come together in that last scene though.
12. The spirit’s VA was good, but slightly overacted towards the end.

World

13. All climbable ledges look pretty much the same, only slightly more varied than in TW2, which had one. A few hours into the game and the player will have learned to recognize the two or three varieties, so I don’t really see the point in highlighting them with huge blobs of red paint. I would also like to know the lore-friendly rationale for Witcher senses detecting them.
14. The cave where the tree spirit dwells looks uninspired. In fcat, it looks less appealing than Johnny’s. Looked too flat, straightforward, lacking mystery. The problem was compounded by the above mentioned poor lighting, which was particularly poor here. The minion monsters the spirit summons themselves look uninspired. Aren't some straight from TW2?
15. The largest sea port in the region doesn’t seem to harbor an awful lot of ships. But probably we weren’t shown its full extent.
16. Why are there so many candles, bonfires, etc, lit in broad daylight?

Map

17. Aesthetically, map just looks beautiful. But why aren’t main roads showing, at the very least?
18. That crosshair moves too slowly. It’s also a bit too conspicuous.

Inventory
19. Why do swords take up only twice the space darts do?
20. Why are swords not depicted in full length?

Combat

21. Why don’t NPCs drop their burning wooden shields?
22. Have thrusts disappeared from Geralt’s repertoire?
23. I’d prefer real time aiming over bullet time when aiming the crossbow.

Story

24. A fellow forum member mentioned something doesn’t add up in Johnny’s quest line. He’s said to have been seen in the company of Ciri, but when he recounts the episode to Geralt, he’s never even in her presence. Of course, he may have helped Ciri escape the Crones later on.

Physics

25. Geese, not Geralt, need to bounce off. When horses collide, as they did in the E3 morsel, they should react.

A lot of points, I'm not going to take them one by one, maybe later because I'm knackered now, but i'll add the things that came to my mind.

I saw triple Yrdens on the ground, perhaps AoE.

I loved the non flocking birds, at least they appear to go randomly, time will tell.

There's a wonderful mystery to the characters & story... who are these people I thought... I desperately want to know more about all of them ! (It's clear we are not going to be delivered everything by direct exposition - this IS storytelling !.)

Geographic elements that can be affected by signs for tactical purposes - woot !

The Shield bearer ! Sword strikes could maybe do with a bit of work, the Igni was fantastic the way it flamed around the shield, Geralt can disarm the shield. Suck it Bioware lol.

Still no physical traps, or sign of a place for them.

Underwater - wow... just WOW.

The Ladies... well, i'll leave that for tomorrow ;)

edit: @crimzonwarrior; did you really have to quote that whole thing for the second post mate? Check the "Video Download centre thread, provided & maintained nicely by @Black Leopard;.

REDpoint was a mistake, but you can keep it anyway.

@crimzonwarrior ,

As far as I know, mega doesn't install any malware. You simply download the file directly, that's how I got it anyway. Check the Video Download thread's OP, you might find more options there.

I can. And I have.
Doesn't stop me from paying attention though. Claiming the demo was flawless when devs themselves said otherwise doesn't sound particularly helpful. These won't prevent the game from being the masterpiece it is shaping out to be, but without these it will be even better.

And I just cannot imagine anyone not wanting a better game.

Apart from point 13 you are mostly nitpicking. I mean how could you notice this and not Geralt beign stuck on gooses, halfling moonwalking on back of some woman and buggy burning shield.

Ok...my English is not enough to get it from point 25 and also I didn´t know what hitches and niggles means. My bad. But in point 21 you were complaining about something else. I meant that burning shield was graphicaly bugged.

A lot of points I agree on, some of them I don't. I'll comment on a few:

6. I think the ear itself looked good, I even cringed a bit when Gran picked it up, but that part at 34:43 did look odd.

9. Indeed. Like he's trying not to draw others' attention with the little 'small talk' at the beginning, right before he gets to the point. I don't really know how to put it. It's a little comical and I'm not sure if that was on purpose.

10. Actually, it's the other way around for me. I'm not a fan of Gran's VA, but I do like Johnny's.

13. I agree, since the climbing is limited to these ledges, I also think there's no need to highlight them. They could tone down the effect at least. (I hope there's a variety in their looks, though. The fact that the climbing is limited - although much better than TW2 - is already slightly disappointing.)

14. The cave looked pretty standard, but then again, why should every cave be fancy?

19. and 20. Agreed, absolutely. It hurts my eyes to see those swords cut in half in the inventory,

22. We need thrusts. Also, Geralt shouldn't begin his attacks with spins (it's OK mid-combat).

I know people are gonna hate me for this, but..I wish the camera angle was closer up. Yep, I'm one of those dirty peasants who think that a closer up camera means more immersion. But I don't want it to be really close up in combat, but while walking around sure.

I mean, this would be totally fine. http://gfycat.com/SoupyWaterloggedJanenschia

I heard there wouldn't be any different modes. I think they should put it in. Am I the only one who thinks this?

I just feel like the current camera is so oddly placed. It gives a great view of the area sure but it makes me feel disconnected.

I wanted more in game camera options too, like gta v or rdr. Push the little tiny BACK button on the xb360 game pad, now I think it is the share button.
Well who knows.. It might have to be the way they have it now because of their new kick ass streaming system. If that is the case then I can live with it,
because they somehow did away with loading screens in the open world. Well I like what I saw for the most part for a WIP demo, I did notice when Geralt was in the whore house they put some ugly yellow skirt around one of the chicks who only had a thong on in the E3 demo of that part:( Why you hide her butt from us now? lol...
Also the chick across from her was the same in every way are they twins or what? Anyways.. when Geralt leaves and and right before he fast travels to the swamps.
We see him looking at the city and I thought it would be cool to see a family of ducks or whatever in that water passing by.

I agree with the Inventory points - doesn't make much sense for a Sword to take up the same space as a Crossbow, and it certainly doesn't make sense that a Sword only uses one more square then Bombs/Potions/Bolts.

I also agree with 21 & 22, although maybe the NPC not dropping his shield is one of those realism/gameplay trade-off's where it would make things too easy if you could always just instantly igni anyone with a shield and they dropped it.

And of course 25 has been discussed I think multiple times now.

Even then, most of those points I agree with are still quite minor issues and either hopefully CDPR already are working on fixing them, or if they intend to leave them as is, they wouldn't really bother me much at all when I'm actually playing. Much of the other stuff really veers heavily into the 'opinion' category (Like Johnny's VA, 'Overacting' Crone/s, Indoor lighting, "Uninspired" areas etc) and honestly I don't see the point in bringing it up - whatever I guess it's not doing anyone any harm.

I agree about the flat lighting indoors which I expect CDPR will fine tune. This was always superb in TW2. The fight with the bandits was much more impressive. The enemy didn't toss his shield because it was protecting him from Igni, and it adds challenge to the combat. Geralt had to work to take that guy down. I'd like the dodge to be a little more fluid and some thrust/stab animations to be mixed with the slashing. My biggest gripe is the witches. Almost too much of a caricature, so bizarre that they clash with the realism of everything else. Now the good stuff:

-animations are superb. All the little things Geralt does as he's standing around, walking, listening to people, facial expressions. A huge improvement over TW2. I tip my hat to the animation team.

-sound design and music is amazing. Can't get over how powerful Aard sounds.

-solid dialog and story telling. You can tell the quest has been condensed but still see the quality.

-swimming looks real good.

-I heard Iorveth's flute melody in the beginning..B)

-excellent variety of character models. As he was riding through Novigrad I couldn't see any repetition. Different sexes, races, clothing types etc.

-typical with CDPR, establishments seem alive and bustling with life.

-sign effects are awesome.

I really like the facial, walking, and sprinting animations. Geralt seems to be weighted and you can even feel the weight of the swords and scabbards from the way they move. But the regular running animation and foot placement needs some work, and 6 months is a lot of time to improve on them. Overall I am astonished that the game looks this good 6 months before the release. I cannot wait to see the final build.

One thing I noticed with Novigrad: No character with floating weapons. No weapon sheaths but hey take what you can get right?

Then in no man's land the bandits had floating weapons to their sides/backs. Pity.

I suppose I could also nitpick a bunch of minor things such as pop up and minor animation quibbles, but overall the gaming experience as a whole just seems so ....absorbing and welcoming....and Huge. I'm personally wowed, and despite never playing prior games (a part of me wishes the XBone gets backwards compatibility for TW2) I can't wait for this. It's going to be a long 6 months waiting but these teasers and demos suggest it will be more than worth it.

Apart from point 13 you are mostly nitpicking. I mean how could you notice this and not Geralt beign stuck on gooses, halfling moonwalking on back of some woman and buggy burning shield.

You can notice that pretty easily. Mostly from.. you know, watching the video.

Wondering if the wooden shields can catch fire.
Wonder why you can't step on the goose, or kick it.
Also, not sure how Geralt knocked his shield off. Was it a parry? Was it a kick attack? Not sure, did anyone get a better glance at it?

The game looks pretty damn impressive. Maybe I am not the one to judge, as I barely care about lighting and I judge the "looks" of the games by asking two questions: 1.) Does it look good? 2.) Do the looks fit the theme? How well? ( therefore IMO Gothic 1 is one of the best looking game ever made because of superb theme fitting. ) From the presentation, the answer to the first question is "yes" and to the other "superbly well". But W3 didn't come out yet, so Gothic 1 gets the glory for now.
Little things poping out need to go.

Music is cool. No questions there.

Combat. Well, the point I made times and times before, need more dodge animations. That's a thing.
An alarming lack of thrusts and stabs, should be noted. There's nothing deadlier then the stab in a vital organs, there should be there.
Combat is very fluid though, which is a plus.
Didn't see parrying at all though. And the riposte system. The details on them would be very much appreciated for people like me, that prefer not to use magic, apart from aard.

I like the fast-travel system. It makes sense, it's not invasive, it's not a 1 button teleport everywhere. That's very nice, and well done.

Character design is very solid. Dijikstra looks like he should. Old people look like they should. Verything is very much well done IMO.

Overall, very good, very impressive. Hope you make good use of the time you have left CDPR.
Getting everything up to snuff and changing the rechargable alchemy system ( which I will repeat, is a HORRIBLE, and I mean HORRIBLE, design decision ).

See ya till next gamplay footage, dear forums, mostly because the CDPR's "DON'T TALK ABOUT LEAKED STUFF" policy rubs me the wrong way.
