A lot of the time, yeah, but it's also helpful for people who have absolutely no sense of direction. I could become hopelessly lost in shrubbery, and while handcrafted maps like those in Original Sin allow me to get by without markers or arrows, worlds with lots of same-looking areas are a serious hassle unless I have some kind of marker to ground me. Can't even count the number of times I've overshot a quest objective in a Bethesda-esque game while trying to navigate without the markers, and having to consult the map every five seconds to make sure I haven't veered off course gets old quick (see: Far Cry 2).Yeah, the glowing arrows and markers screaming "go here dummy" are just that, for dummies.
