Roach Race appreciation

+
I didn't expect to like Roach Race as much as I do. It's a testament to how a simple design can still be enjoyable.

Also, I'm quite bad at it. Quite a bit of time playing it, and I'm only able to get to 3rd place. And I began my playing of it thinking "this is too easy!" Oh, I quickly became disabused of that. A few levels in, everything's faster and the obstacles are less predictable.

My aging reflexes aren't keeping up so much!

It's funny - I'm not playing Cyberpunk 2077 to play an arcade simulator, but now that it's there, I'd love some more (official) additions to what we can do in-game.

In fact, I've found that both Wardrobe and Roach Race have made 1.6 a much better experience than I expected - I didn't think much of either going on, but I now wouldn't want to play without them!

Cheers,
Merric

I've only played the Android version of Roach Race, but I fully agree that a simple design can work really well. The game's idea is probably one of the oldest in the world of video games, but the Witcher theme makes it stand out from all the others I've seen or played.

I've yet to complete level 2-2 -- carrots can be more of a hindrance than a help with the already higher speed -- but the game never gets old no matter how many times I try and fail to beat my high score.

Level x-3 is my favourite because it features a remix of Banana Tiger (also known as "Steel for Humans").

Agreed. Simple, fun and enjoyably replayable.

And I, too, can’t seem to get higher than 3rd place.

Hopefully they’ll make some of the other arcade games playable. (Like, imagine playing that racing game and 1st place on the leaderboard wins you a new car, lol.)

Same here. Third place seems to be the charm. I seem to get my best performances while "zoning out" a bit, but still never better than third place. Oh well.

Also, for me at least, mobile version seems to be more challenging than PC version.

Anyways, I really love the game and the humor it has! It was great that they made it actually playable :cool:Lovely little Easter Egg.

The mobile version uses different code for the placement of challenges - on the PC, monsters never fly in on the ground until later levels, but they start there on the mobile app, and there are other changes besides.

Still haven't got above 3rd on the PC/console versions. Need to do better!

Cheers,
Merric

Finally got first place… after having restarted my game for the third time to recreate my character and redistribute attribute points because I didn’t like how I was progressing the first two times I tried playing CP77.

Now I’m stuck with this play through! No more of that Prologue and no more Roach Race for me. Third time was the charm for 1st place, lol.

Good luck out there Roaches!

At fist I was annoyed that you only get one life, so if you die you have to start again. After I couple tries I realized having only one life is a good thing. I didn't fire up Cyberpunk with the limited game time I have just to play another game from when I was 10. So after dying, it's easier to have that choice of trying again or go back to blasting gonks.

My first goal was to beat Jackie's score. After that just getting closer to top 5. Now I've hit 5th so I'm just looking for that incremental progression.

I also like that V can waste a casino full of Tiger Claws but before leaving says "Ooo! Roach Race.... yeah, I got time." That makes me happy.

Hi ! I'm quite fond of that minigame too and managed to score a 4841 ! It would be fun if CDprojektred publishes a world leaderboard, or even make a contest on that !

Now that I've a better PC and can run the game, I've been able to find out what Roach Race is like as an arcade game.

Android high score: 2108
PC high score: 3443 (took about an hour of trying and trying and trying)
In terms of levels I have made it further on Android, though.

Both versions are great, but I prefer the arcade version; it's on a bigger screen, and using spacebar is easier than tapping.

(The rewards for getting good scores are pretty nice.)

Edit: New personal high score, 4162.
