Roach the frustrating one!

Hi guys, can someone explain logic behind Roach not following white dots on the map? He just randomly goes where he pleases, just like Dr.Mudno! Thats a little frustrating...I hope you guys fix this in the next patch. Its not fun when he randomly turns away or randomly stops when nothing is in front of him.

Cheers,
Igor

We have auto-pilot in the game? Why would you want that...

Reminds me of the story of a pilot's tech report to complain about the auto-landing system being a bit rough on the landing. The tech replied to the report "this plane does not have an auto-landing system".

He follows roads. If you want him to use a different route (white dots or not), you need to drive him, steer him, whatever it's called with horses.

Why do you even follow the white dotted line? i found it as an illogical path to reach the destination, the best way is to steer it alone.

Next question: why does Geralt not fight for himself in combat?

You've got a point, it is a little odd that there is behaviour to have him follow roads but it completely disregards the path to your next quest. I invariably have to turn him, at which point he whinnies and stops, or just plain runs into trees, and then I have to start him up again.

Once he's off road that's a different matter. I mean, given the fact that you will always have an active quest, why the hell isn't he following the dots that will always be there on a road. It's simply the most logical thing to do.

Roach is only limited to follow the road. Also Roach path finding its quite limited. So get use to manual control the horse. Its part of gameplay mechanics so get use to it.

Why would your horse know where your next quest is?

HalStep, that video is even cooler than the person using the hornets' nests to kill bandits. Go Roach!

To me, this is just a case of how much do we want to play the game, versus having the game play us. The autopilot is useful when I want to use one hand to have a drink (scotch or coffee, depending on what time I'm playing) but really... why bother playing if things are fully automated?

I love the way Roach occasionally gets stuck, takes the wrong way even when in autopilot, and seems to have her own opinion of where to go. She's a horse! I sort of wish she could buck me off if I try to ride her over a cliff, now that would be more realistic and I bet it would get complaints. A horse (real one, that is) will often follow a path of its own accord with little or no input from me, but it has no idea where I actually want to go.

/waffle.

You guys missed the point. He just dont behave how he should. He will stop for no reason and he will change direction for no good reason. So his AI is need to be fixed.

i did get your point and i do agree in part, the stop/start thing is very frustrating and it would be very helpful if it was fixed.but roach wildly turning for no seeming reason could be put down to being spooked by the slightest thing just like a real horse,so in that regard it could be thought of as some very clever AI

I a lot of that stuff is intentional. REAL horses do act like that.

Roach has many annoying habits. Like when you whistle on him, he'll appear behind the only building within miles. Whistle him in a built up area and he almost always appears behind a fence and struggles to get to you and sometimes when you approach him after combat or if you just got off to explore something, he'll run off in a random direction when you approach him. it's also laughable that people are saying his behaviour is realistic, like it was intended to work that way, and going away all smug with themselves. It may be so to an extent, but the real issue is his poor path finding. Other npcs suffer from the same thing and a npc doing similar things isn't realistic. No idea why they'd make roach act in a realistic manner and go to the amount of detail that people are saying he achieves when npc humans can be awful.

Honestly, I didn't even for an instant think that Roach had an auto-pilot. I've always controlled her while riding. One funny thing I noticed, and was a bit disappointed by, was coming to a bridge...
Got to Troll Bridge from the south and it was raised. Got off Roach and swam across to the other side, where I had seen a wheel to turn. After lowering the bridge, I whistled for Roach. Even though she was just on the other side of the bridge, instead of coming across the bridge, she disappeared and spawned behind me.

And why would it knows that it have to follow roads automatically? Even when it is following roads it's an automatic simulation that Geralt is "driving" it trough the road... the same argument can be used for Roach going automatically to a quest marker... The horse is been "driven" (don't know if it's the right word for horse riding).

Just one question: why do you write "she"? Roach is male or female? Because in Brazilian Portuguese translation Roach is called Carpeado, a male name lol.

I agree. Roach is beyond dumb. Stopping on the road from a gallop for no reason. No monsters/wolves around to spook the dang thing.. You whistle and he gets stuck EVERYWHERE. No point in waiting/hoping he will actually make it over to you. He might, but by the time he would, you could have walked to your destination :p
