Romance and books (poll)

Hello everyone,
I'd like to test an hypotesis.

I'm curious about whether reading the books influenced your romance choice in TW3 or not. In my case it did.

Please, answer to this poll: do it for science!

[EDIT] Notes:

IMPORTANT:
Please choose the "I read the books" options ONLY if you read them BEFORE starting to play TW3.

How many books do you need read in order to say that you "read the books"?
If you feel that the books you read enhanced your knowledge of the TW setting, made you more invested in the characters and helped you understanding TW3 story better than you have read the books. If you feel that the books you read didn't have a significant impact on how you experienced the game (because you read too little or nothing at all) than you haven't read them.

[EDIT 2] I explained what I wanted to test when I created this thread on page 6. I copied that post below for convenience:

Ok: My expectations were as follows.

  • I expected there were more people that had read the books than people that hadn't.
  • I expected Triss to be more popular than Yennefer overall.
  • I expected Yennefer to be more popular among those who read the books and Triss to be more popular among those who didn't read them.

Hypothesis 1
It is the less interesting. Naturally the people who read and post on the forums are more likely to be hardcore fans of The Witcher and Hardcore fans tend to consume every piece of content related to the brand they love.

Hypothesis 2
I expected Triss to be more popular (50 votes against 44 so far... not a big difference though) for a simple reason. Because she ego-strokes Geralt, while Yennefer does not. I don't want to go too deep into this because I don't want to start a flame war, but Ego-Strokes are a proven factor that drives player engagement and attachment. For examples of ego strokes please refer to the Enchanter lines of dialogue in Diablo III.

Hypothesis 3
This one is the most tricky because there are reasons to believe in my hypothesis and reason to think it is wrong. Of course Yennefer is a bit too cold and bossy in TW3, moreover the first 2 games build up the relationship between Triss and Geralt, while barely mentioning Yen. This of course drives players that didn't read the books to choose the redhead rather than the brunette. We need to consider another fact though: in TW3 the default relationship is the one between Geralt and Yen. If a player decides to go with the flow he has to choose Yen. That's why I was curious about this particular hypotesis. I wanted to see how many players had the "strength" to go against the default plot.

I chose Triss, because I flt that chasing after Yennefer for two games, the reunion scene with her at the end of the intro did not suit me at all.
A powerful sorceress like her, you are madly in love with her, and with all the magical means and support she has, she did not even attempt to contact you ???
Talk about some love. Triss on the other hand, seems to show genuine regrets over past events.
I have not finished the game yet, but I will definitely do a replay a least another time.

Yes it did... how could it not?

That is not the topic of the discussion mate...

Wait, what? W1&2's main mission was to find Yen? Good to know, after all this time...:p

Even if Geralt has more pressing matters to deal with in TW2, he never stops telling that what he wants to do after re-gaining his freedon is to find Yennefer. You can't even avoid to say that as a player... there is no dialogue choice in those occasions. You just know that what Geralt wants is to find Yennefer, which gets even pretty annoying if you care about Triss and you want to choose her as your romance option.

BTW OP, if you want it to be a "perfect" poll, you should account for the "WHEN " of the books being read was.

Whether people read the books before the games or after the games.
*There will be a difference in results*

But in W2&1 he has an amnesia and has no idea who Yennefer is. That changes only by the end of the second game when he finally regains his memory...and THEN he starts looking for her (which happens between 2&3).

You are right.

The "I read the books" options are meant for those that read them before starting to play TW3. I put a note in the original post to specify that.

*patiently counts seconds until this thread turns into another Yen vs Triss war*
Oh sure I am ready for another round of this lovely stuff. Just let me bring some strong alcohol up to endure all of this. What a lovely day.

Anyway, I read the books (7 out of 8 ) and chose Yen in my first run, even before playing it I had exactly in mind what choice I'd have made. Still, I think this question has to be asked for all the three games.

You can't change the rules like that! :p

My first playthrough I did not read the books and I chose Triss (Well, both because I expected a bioware moment where I had to specifically choose, but I would have chosen Triss). Then I read the books and played it again and actually chose Triss, reading the books did not change my choice.

To be fair, he should have done it since the very beginning like that.
There will be a difference really.

I read all the books (short stories and saga before the games and the the Season of Storms before TW3) and I chose Triss because she is more of my type (at least the TW2 and TW3 Triss). If Yen in TW3 behaved more like in the saga than in the short stories, maybe I would have chosen Yen.

However, when I saw this topic I was quite sure it would be some Blood and Wine speculation about Fringilla.

And yes, I would vote for Fringilla romance option! :D

Actually that's not true, Geralt remembers Yennefer in one of his very first flashbacks of TW2. In Flotsam Triss/Geralt were planning to recover the rest of his memory, give Roche the big middle finger and go off in search of Yen.

However he has a multitude of things that stop him. Primarily of course the fact that Triss ends up in dire straits, which then flows over into the second reason that he still doesn't have all his memory back, so likely even if he remembers Yen/Ciri he doesn't yet quite grasp how important they are. Lastly of course, and the least important of the reasons however, is that he's still labelled as a Kingslayer, and he might even be able to knock that one out whilst he's rescuing Triss, two birds with one stone.

Also, and this should go without saying, but this thread is rife with opportunity for shenanigans. So try to keep this clean, lest mods have to intervene and possibly even shut another thread down. Recent threads have kept well, and no cause for alarm, but this one's subject obviously teeters the line far more precariously, so take care.

Read all 8 books between TW2 and TW3, prefer Yennefer from both role-playing and personal perspective. Easy-peasy ;)
