Romance: Quality over quantity, V

Yeah that whole talk at dinner with River was awkward even for a male V. When his sister was sort of hitting on you, asking if you're single and you can't explicitly say no even if in a romance with someone.

That's not entirely accurate. The romances in this game, especially Panam, are by far the most fleshed out in any RPG including the Bioware ones and vanilla Witcher 3. That said, there will always be finite content. There are some good suggestions in this thread on how to counter that, but at the end of the day it will still be finite even with repeatable dynamic content. No one is asking for plot variety so I'm no sure where that's coming from. Just for romances to not completely drop off the face of the map once you do the final quest/sex scene.

To say the game is nonlinear is disingenuous at best. There are a multitude of choices that can affect things in the world, including quests that will affect completely unrelated quests down the line. This whole notion that the game is static is perpetuated by people who have either never done more than one playthrough, or are picking the same choices over and over again.

And going back to the romances, no this isn't sims at all what people are asking for. It's simple dynamic events that even AC Valhalla managed to get right. This isn't rocket science here, nor is it unattainable. They were already headed in that direction with Corvo Bianco in Witcher 3, so it isn't like this is outside of CDPRs realm of possibility.

If you're referring to that guy claiming to be a developer that was posted on reddit today, don't believe that. Aside from the obvious fiction, his argument really fell apart when he started spouting amateurish nonsense about programming. The stuff he was saying about how it works, and the false claim that each platform specific version of the game has unique code exposed it as a lie. I won't bother to go point for point on it here as I don't want to detract from the purpose of this thread, but any one with a basic understanding of how programming works in game development can see that is a BS leak from that alone.
Well Meredith stout dont impact your story whatoever unless you want the iconic weapon
Letting Royce live will grant a safe quest for safe nancy interview without shooting ppl thats it a side quest that dont even effect your main story
Siding with Netwatch doesnt end up anywhere same with voodoo boys same outcome
Sparing Sasquatch doesnt do anything killing her neither u never get to know Animals
You can't save Scorpion you save mitch no matter what no outcome out of that
Frank no matter what you do he wants to kill you and it doesnt effect in any way shape of form your ending same as Royce same as Meredith
i could name many other cases my point is the game is very linear the only thing is different is that after you do your arc missions you then can choose your ending this is not different than cold war call of duty when it comes to choosing different ending im sorry to break it to you but none of the choices you make changes you path you pick and choose your end at the end of your arcs plain and simple

Yeah, we gay men don't have quantity or quality.
(I still love Kerry tho, lol)
I could get to love him if I'd get to know him better still. Spend some quality time with him. I know it's trivial, but eating popcorn while watching some bad sitcom like he mentions could actually give a lot of flavour to his romance.

Tho admittedly I'd always choose Mateo over Kerry any time. :p

I agree! They didn't bother to give River or Kerry enough screen time to actually develope their relationship with V, and I serioulsy don't know why. Maybe they're scared of men something lol.

And Mateo is Mateo, with those beautiful eyes I would not be able to say no to him, haha.

Female romances, male romances in this game done really badly, especially Kerry.

In all fairness you can probably lump Judy into that as well. I know a lot of Judy fans don't want to admit it for some reason, but she just doesn't have the same amount of romance content as Panam. You can't even flirt with Judy during her quests like you can with Panam. There's no buildup with each of her quests like there is with Panam. Everything for Judy starts at the ending of Pisces with a kiss on the cheek depending on your choice with Maiko and if you're a female V.

Then you get some romance specific dialogue in Pyramid Song, the scene - and that's it. A few text message exchanges, and nothing until the Aldecaldos ending. Even there though, she has WAY less romance specific dialogue in that ending than Panam does - who has a whole lot, including places you wouldn't have even expected.

Panam on the other hand, in every single one of her quests you get the opportunity to flirt with her, and you can see the relationship build up over the course of them. You also have flirty texts with her throughout that. Then there's several nomads who make mention of your budding relationship. It all feels more authentic and gradually built to her final romance quest. Unfortunately she only sends one text message after that, but if you choose the Aldecaldos ending you're then bombarded with several additional romance scenes and dialogue responses/dialogue in general.

No other romance in the game has this much integration, which is something you'd think they would have learned with how they handled Yennefer vs Triss in Witcher 3.

This isn't a "Panam is better than all the others" type of post, I'm merely pointing out the facts as I see them when looking at all the others. The quantity, and in many cases you could even argue the quality, is not equal across all 4 options.

Only thing I can think of is it comes down to the characters individual writers. And honestly, serious hats off to whoever wrote Panam.

You make a good point noticing these flirtatious lines with Panam, while in Judy's case the quests seem more involved with the subject at hand. But to be honest I never minded that with Judy, I subscribed it to her being shy to show affection and reserving her emotions when it comes to attraction to others. While Panam gives instantly that confident vibe that will tell you she will wrestle with you in any topic and can handle flirtatious banter easily. She is simply headstrong and determined, while still sometimes struggling with being honest with herself.

Judy on the other hand seems thought by life that she needs to be careful with people and reserved, she is very slow to open up and struggles under burdens even till the last moment. She feels she has lot to lose if she does open up and fears showing commitment because of it. So is hesitant to pick up on banter about it until you gain bit of trust from her. She will however show it precisely when she is sure, with a kiss for example if you play your part right in the Clouds quest with her.

Seeing these 2 vastly different personalities presented so well is such damn joy and can't be complimented enough.

If that works for you, I'm not here to judge. At the end of the day if you're happy with what you got that's all that matters. :)

I'm just speaking as a Panam romancer who feels like the others didn't receive as much quantity or quality as she did is all.

You've described Judys character development quite accurately. Though I feel as if it could have still benefited from being able to express interest in her as a female V early on as opposed to how it's handled in game. I think they tried to account for that by giving her more post romance text messages, but just don't feel as if it's enough to make up for the lack of a gradual buildup.

As for Panam, she's actually shy herself and even admits that's the reason she was hesitant earlier on interestingly enough. One of the biggest romance dialogue exchanges with her is talking about how she's afraid to let her feelings about V become known to him because she's afraid she'll screw things up and she'll be left alone out in the desert.

But again, that's just my thoughts on the matter looking on it from the outside. I still believe that objectively she still received less than Panam. And it wouldn't hurt to parlay that into additional content for her alongside those who felt the same with Kerry or River were they to handle this like they did with the free Triss/Yen romance update. :)

Well said OP. Couldn't agree more.

While the romances in this game are perhaps the best I've seen in any RPG, I did find it strange how right after the final quest things go completely silent until the ending.

To expand upon what you wrote here are a few suggestions:

Assassins Creed Valhalla romances allow you to initiate either a kiss or sex scene. These things should be present after completing the final quest, it will bring more life to the characters and make them feel less like lifeless NPCs.

Valhalla also (in the case of one romance) allows you to hang out with a character you're romancing in. This is where CDPR can make this shine, as it's repeatable content that can be played however/whenever you want and adds more interactions. Valhalla allowed you to either play a board game with your romance, play a drinking game, or compete against them in archery. During either of these, there is playful teasing couples banter that really makes it feel like a real relationship.

This can be done with the romances in this game through a few ways:

  • Racing. Just like the racing with Claire, imagine riding with Panam or Judy in competitive racing. Repeatable content. Different tracks. Can offer unique romance banter throughout. Adds more value.

  • Some sort of board/card game. From the studio that made Gwent, surely they can come up with something. Similarly to how Valhalla handles it, you can have playful competitive background dialogue with your romance partner in game that varies depending on who is winning/what happens.

  • Some sort of date with dynamic dialogue. Can take Judy out to eat. Sit around a campfire in the badlands with Panam. Or even something as simple as going for a drive. There can be 2-3 variations of the dialogue exchanges in there that can be randomized. That way if you do it every now and then over the course of the game it'll still be unique.

  • You mentioned it before, but being able to initiate a kiss or sex scene with them when you're there physically. Again, even AC Valhalla does this. CDPR is leading the romance department everywhere else, but dynamic interactions that will add SO MUCH life to them are currently lacking.

  • The lack of being able to sleep at their place, or have them over at yours is also strange. CDPR did this, albeit through an Expansion, with Corvo Bianco. Allowing Yennefer or Triss to hang out around the estate, have several new dialogue responses, and sleep in the bed at night time. Currently there is virtually NO reason to keep returning to your apartment. Having your romance move in with you would go a long way in giving you a reason to keep going back there. And there's no reason not to. After you finish their final quest, they hang out at one spot for the remainder of the game. Why can't it at least be at your place? Not like they have to be somewhere else due to story reasons.
In summary, more dynamic content needs to be added to fill in the huge gap between the end of the romance quest, and the ending of the game. The game feels so empty in between because everything goes so silent from them. Part of what made the first half or so great was periodically getting a call and getting to interact with the romances as you went about doing side quests.
Those are some really great ideas! I also was annoyed at how as soon as we finish the sidequest chains for the various characters theres nothing we can do with them. I was male V so I romanced Panam, and I loved how with her you kind of had to work for it. Obviously its a game so its not that hard lol, its fairly obvious which dialogue options you choose and what choices you make to win her over, but still, the process of getting to know her and breaking down her guard was so well done. I think thats why so many of us are so in our feels and upset about the lack of further content with our romance options, because what is there is SO well done. Finally 'reaching the top of the mountain' and getting the girl is great but it sucks that after that it feels like theres no point to any of it, its like you get Panam and then immediately lose her lol. The fact that theres no content post side quests for these characters just really breaks the effect and immersion of the game .

A lot of devs forget that you can give romance a lot more depth by simply giving the player a few options to do something with their love interest.

- Allow us to take our love interest some places in Night City. Not specific locations, just let us tell them "let's go somewhere" and they follow us around. Maybe lock off the main story to avoid issues, but basically you can take them anywhere in the city and spend some time with them.
- Going to restaurant or bar together and being able to sit down and have a little timeskip would give some sense of spending time together and having attention for each other.
- Allow us to invite our love interest to OUR apartment and watch a movie with them, or listen to music, or just hang out. Doesn't even really need much voice acting.
- Allow us to kiss our love interest whenever we want. "I just came to say hi. [Smooch]"

Do those four things, and you suddenly already have a deeper connection to your love interest.

So many people called for some sort of companion system. Considering that there is basically already implementation of it tru the game, there are many times other characters join you on a quest and they appear to be invisible even if they stroll right in front of the enemy, so it is again still all on you how it plays out if you wanna go into a bullet storm or sneak your way. I don't know if they can get seriously injured but I doubt it, maybe someone tested already?
Because of that we can be confident that we will have this feature, to take them with us and have them follow us and join on random side quests, as long as there is dialogue that follows with them it would be truly amazing. Personally I would like it if it also carries some risk, they can get injured and taken out of action for a while if you don't take care. I hope this doesn't sound too ambitious.

As for taking them out I honestly believe this was also intended, too many restaurants and bars to go around that have no real purpose atm since you can get the same buffs from vending machines right next to you. Or them weird sex stores? Was it just to show us they can model dildoes? If so why aren't there furniture stores to show us they can model furniture too? The option to take your relationship there seems only natural if they had implemented that interactivity with the world. And same goes for the apartment, your own apartment is currently underused, the apartment you get by getting close to the character you romance or befriend is also suffering same fate.

OMG, I get to sleep in Judy's apartment!? HELL YES! No, but you have this Judy-apartment-flavored stash box... While you can have same one just by calling your vehicle again, seems like it couldn't have been all they envisioned it to be. I was hoping to find the character in a different state, maybe she will sleep at some point? Work on these robots she designed? Braindances? Window all the way baby!
They made an effort to give you that space, I refuse to believe it's just for the stash, we will see more happen with it definitely. And we know purchasing apartments was a thing that got scraped same for buying stuff for it, hope we might see that too, it can only add to longevity of the game to have all these.

And like you I really hope those voice actors will be up for more if necessary. They deserve so much love, the voice actors gave it all so much life.
I looked up the voice actors for V, expecting to find something like that random potato that got left in a cupboard for a year or two, but nope... Both are *very much not potatoes*. lol

I still feel like Kerry was just an aftertought.
Yeah, we gay men don't have quantity or quality.
I still find the whole Kerry romance to be super creepy. Super, super creepy. Even if V turns out to be 40, Kerry is still around twice his age. And not actually into V... just projecting because of Johnny... Same as Rogue. (Tho at least Rogue doesn't have some creepy not-aging thing going on... Edit: and it IS creepy, the technology is good, but not that good.)

I know. And my annoyance is that Kerry actually acts so much more immature than V too...

Jap there u have it, she got the dialog she is afraid to be left alone in the desert. But after the storie is over, her worst nightmare gets reality. Because u cant do ANYTHING with her anymore. I hope so bad that this is going to change soon.

Kerry and River definitely need more content.
Well i need a sandwich. Why is there no sandwiches in any games like this where you can have a romance option?

I would really like Mateo to be an gay/bi romance option.
Love at first sight...
Me too. I was like:
"I have to find the owner of this club - OH! Never mind, i just found you, handsome guy..!"

Well i don't get it: After you had the quests in Lizzie's and The Clouds there should be all the joy toys waiting for you...
This would be the right place to get some relaxing after a hard day... ;) but no....

LOL i just realized the OP's post did not age well, since the Panam love story has major ties to the ending
