Rules against advertising on the forum

From the Oculus thread, where a Kickstarter link had been removed:

Tommy said:
Sorry guys i had to remove the link . Forum policy has it that no outside advertising is allowed on this site . Even though they are asking for donations it`s still advertising for funds .

OK, now this warrants further discussion. Where do we draw the line? I remember an overzealous CM on the EA boards banning signature images containing references to non-EA games, citing a similar rule.

It's all in the forum rules sticky :p

If someone profits from the link, it's a no go. So making posts containing eBay auctions, Kickstarters, or even referral links (where the user gets something for each click on the link, such as Amazon referrals) is not a very good idea.

No comment on EA, that's just stupid. Unless the signature was flashing with "Buy this game! Get 50% off!" and lead to some webstore, lol.

Sorry if i broke the rules about advertising, that wasn't my purpose posting kickstarter link.

btw Is it ok to post trailers and teasers? Technically they are part of advertising campaigns.

Trailers and teasers are ok . The main body of the link and or post shouldn`t contain any advertising .

advertising as in only for money right? I didn't get the referral part (since I made a similar mistake in the past) what if I want help from my friends to win something (non money related) like votes for a some contest or something that no go too?

Kickstarted is only about donation's, donation's and more donation's. I agree with *Tommy*, I dont want to see anyone advertising or attempts of trying to seduce me into sending money for something that doesn't even exist.

Aren't ideas real? Don't they exist? What about software? Is it not real because you can't touch it? What about preordering a game?

If you ever bought a digital game (GOG.com for example) you invested your money on an idea that consists of instructions executed by a CPU, and its only physical manifestation are voltage differences. You payed to have a machine perform miniature electrical impulses. Sounds like a waste of money doesn't it? :p

But yeah, advertisements where money is involved are a different thing.

While I don't think the forum should be used for advertising, I see nothing wrong with crowdfunding in general. That's what Kickstarter is for. If you aren't familiar with the idea, read more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_funding

Tommy made the right call. The kick starter video was advertising. Keep it off the forum.

Thing is we need to draw the line somewhere on advertising . If we didn`t then soon we would and have had numerous links to sites across the board and all of them want your hard earned money . Anyone who has been a member here for some time should remember the inundated spam attacks advertising shoes , handbags , and yes even porn sites just to name a few . So to be fair to everyone involved we just said no to all advertising . Simply because you can`t draw a line and have that line keep moving from one day to the next .
