' The Witcher 3 Is Reportedly Getting A New Story DLC From The Witcher Remake Team '

' The Witcher 3 set for third major expansion in 2026, says insider '

' The Witcher 3 rumour says new DLC is on the way, not a full expansion '

Those are some of the (contradicting) rumors currently circulating around the internet.

What do you guys think?

True or false?

If true, what would the expansion be about?

One more adventure with Geralt? Or a possible playthrough as Ciri setting up the events of TW4?

My opinion:

Whether true or false it is hard to tell at this point. Yes the game has been out for 11 years but I still believe that dropping a new expansion out of nowhere can certainly be lucrative even for an 'old' game like this.

In my opinion, it would make (at least some) money not to mention a great marketing 'warm up' before the campaign for TW4 starts off.

It's hard to imagine it being a net loss.

Ciri or Geralt?

I would very much prefer Geralt come out of retirement for one more adventure.

Playing as Ciri before TW4 comes out kind of takes the novelty out of the situation even though I would understand the strategy behind that decision.

Let me know what you think! And most importantly, would you buy it? I certainly would!

I think making a new expansion at this point is a bad idea. The game is already 10 years old and the story is finished. Just let it rest and move on.

Anyway, if the expansion is real, the only thing that makes sense to me is to build up the story up to somewhere close to the beginning of the Witcher 4. Like going through Ciri's thoughts and emotions about becoming a witcher, reactions of others, the mutations themselves, etc.

I am most probably not going to play it. The game is done for me and I hope that anything game-cannon will be done properly in the Witcher 4.

In the end, I still think it's an absolutely horrible idea to make Ciri a witcher (if that's truly the case). In the books there were many different characters, and the story was about them working together through their differences, not becoming the same.
Ciri was unique in her education, fighting style, destiny, (evasiveness), excellent memory, sense of justice, connections to many, resilience,...
At end end she found her own way - she used unique magic to save Geralt and Yen from dying and hid them from a fight; and she did reason about it - she said something like: "Yen, what's magic good to you if it can't save people?"
She has gotten over everything and got her evasive happy ending.
I see her becoming a witcher as ignoring what she's about, what she went through and so breaking who she's become.

If it's true and "story content" DLC, at best it will be like the little "pigs quest", so no point to really discuss what it could be and would probably not be worth to replay the entire game for most people :)

Wow I did not consider that.

Is there no way to play only Blood and Wine alone?

They would deifnitely have to include that option for people who maybe don't have their old end-game saves because they maybe uninstalled the game as well as new players.

If there is any truth to this, then "The Witcher 3 Is Reportedly Getting A New Story DLC From The Witcher Remake Team" sounds the most plausible to me. Fool's Theory (the team working on the remake) is made up of ex-CDPR employees who would have experience with the RED Engine. Furthermore, in one of their recent investor calls CDPR mentioned the Remake project was being pushed a bit further out, which would free up devs from Fool's Theory to help with ongoing projects.

And yes, story DLC would be something that I'd expect to be free and on the smaller side - similar to what we saw with the quest they added for the Netflix-inspired witcher set. A paid expansion would make less sense to me as that would require significantly more investment in terms of both capital and dev time, working on an obsolete engine to boot. Not to mention the PR nightmare that would result from the Complete Edition of the game no longer being... well, complete. Likely something they could use to promote the cross-platfrom mod support they recently announced - "this DLC was made using our modding tools and can be played cross-platform" kind of thing.

I don't think it would matter much at this point since the game was out for so long.

Wait a minute...you actually need a reason to hop back into TW3?? ;)

I think it's just going to be a nice-sized DLC with a few quests and a nice piece of gear. More than just a single quest/gear drop, but way less than a full expansion. It won't cost anything. Its sole purpose will be to get people back into, or into for the first time, The Witcher universe, before the release announcement of The Witcher 4.

No I don't. I play the game time to time (every year or two since release).
But it's not a little quest* which will especially make me want to jump into the game again. These kind of quests are generally (in my opinion), completely irrelevant for the whole game. My last playthrough I completely avoided the "netflix quest"...
Did I feel I missed something? Not at all.
*Little quest like the DLC quests which are already in the game (pigs/Netflox show/...)

I'm guessing a DLC, as an expansion would consume quite a bit of resources, perhaps a substantially-sized DLC, that would segue the ending of TW3 into the start of TW4, or something that helps set the stage e.g. explaining how Ciri got her Witcher mutations if she actually has any, or perhaps lay the foundation lore for the Lynx school since that figures prominently in the marketing.

Rumor Update:

The current rumors circulating on the internet seem to be suggesting that:

- The DLC should come out in May
- Be around the size of Blood & Wine
- Cost about 30$
- Take place in Zerrikania

Whether we will play as Geralt or Ciri is not certain. Whether the DLC story takes place during the events of TW3 or after is also not certain.

What do you all think?

I'm personally not that excited about Zerrikania being the DLC map. Was hoping it would take place in Nilfgaard or the Northern Kingdoms.

But given the several possible post-war states of the world, Zerrikania seems like a logical choice since it is a region not affected by the war.

It's just my opinion and everyone is free to disagree with, but personally I'm still very doubtful about a possible upcoming expansion (I say "expansion", meaning the size and quality of CDPR's expansions). otherwise a little free DLC (or a couple of DLCs) is very, very possible. A "CDPR 30 dollars" expansion represent so much work, that I hardly believe it would be possible without the full/majority force of the studio...

From what I saw during the last investitor calls, IF there is an upcoming expansion, it very likely won't be made by CDPR themself. The studio(s) mainly and alost only works on TW4 and Cyberpunk 2 for a good while now (Could be Fool's Theory is working on it). So I will likely do what I never did since more than a decade for CDPR products, I will wait for the reviews before buying it...

I am a total believer in this rumored expansion, at a first glance I'm not that excited about Zerrikania - but honestly, I think they'll surprise us in a good way.
I think it's going to take place after W3 and serve as a prologue to W4, at least that's what the rumors suggest.

Would be nice to get another story DLC, if the rumors turn out to be true, I'll be very happy. It could do a few things: bridge the story to TW4 Ciri wise, explain the logic behind her becoming a true witcher, tie in all the endings of TW3 to the TW4 start, bring up the hype for the sequel and give a lot of good publicity. As for Zerrikania, it's a good choice, it's a place established in the lore, the new game takes place in Kovir, which is a snowy northern region, opposite of what Zerrikania is, so it gives a nice variety and it doesn't waste the novelty of presumable TW4 locations. All in all, I hope the rumors are true, it would be fun.

For about six months, I've been reading rumors about DLC for The Witcher 3, which is due to be released in 2026 and become the starting point of an advertising campaign for the Witcher 4. Question: Are these rumors grounded?
Some forums say that an add-on is being developed and that it will take place in new locations. But not in the north, as in the Witcher 4 commercials, where we see Ciri in Kovir, but somewhere in the southern countries.
They also write about the cost of development and the price of the add-on.
If all this is not just an empty fantasy, what languages will the addition be voiced in and what languages will the subtitles be in?

So far, the third expansion is just a rumour. CDPR haven't commented publicly on the subject one way or the other.
