It makes this tweet from their QA Lead a little suspect, to be honest, but maybe I'm just being overly wary and this bug was introduced in later builds than the one he playtested. Whatever the case, I'm hoping they'll address this issue in a hotfix sooner rather than later, coz I'm not keen on spending Christmas with a metaphorical Sword of Damocles atop my save files.

We probably won't see another patch till January.

Seriously CDPR this must be a f****g joke? After 55 hours my save is already 4.50mb and i only crafted ammo and few weapon upgrades. Main story is just beginning of chapter 2.

I'm starting to know about the issue, same as you, beginning of Act 2, completionist run, I take my time doing everything, walking, going slow inmersing my self and shit, and not even crafted that much stuff at all, just dismantling a lot... and 4.5MB after 70 hours, I don't know, I'm a bit afraid to continue playing sessions of 4-6 hours per day if before December 31 probably the file will get arround 8MB.

Hope they can fix this before the big patchs on January or February, as a super small hotfix for PC, if not... I'm worried this would be a game breaking for all of us, the completionist ones, who are loving the game.

Tbh I'm not sure if this is a small fix. Save file handling is very fundamental of a game which has direct connection with how the game handles objects in the world. It must be fixed, but it won't be an easy one. All I hope is a save file cleanup tool if it is possible.

Honestly what worries me is how their tech support page basically says "We might increase the save file size limit."
So what, you're saying you *MIGHT* fix a game killing bug, but you also may not? That's the most tone deaf response I've ever heard.

it should be fairly easy. mount and blade bannerlord has the exact same problem currently, even when you try to get rid of crafted items they stay in background of the game forever. eventually this leads to huge lag when saving and on hangups on certain screens. all they need to do is purge items no longer in the inventory or storage so it should be pretty straight forward

We really can't say for sure. For all we know the game is made of spaghetti code. And add that to all the bugs and problems they currently have. The fact that they can't give assurance and all they said in support is they "might" fix it is very alarming.

no, it means they might do this, or something completely different to fix the issue... like for example purging the item IDs that are no longer in inventory... there are many possibilities how to fix this, but they need to verify if a fix wont break something else.. and that takes time...

and btw, January is not that far away...

And who knows how many more people unaware of the issue would get their save files corrupt during this period of time. Since many people will probably play during the holiday season.

best possible way to fix this would be to rework the material yields items give, so you wont get extra stuff out of thin air so easily.. things like that were not possible in Witcher 3, crafted thing was always cheaper than sum of items needed to craft it..

So... still keeping track of the new Save files and I'm now up to 17 save files while still in the prologue. I'm at level 10, and have done most of the side missions labeled as moderate in watson.

However, because I'm keeping track of each save file, I noticed something... odd about game save files. Wondering is anyone else has noticed this, or would mind testing it. It's super simple and wont require you to do anything different with your game.

Step 1 - save the game while looking out at the cityscape or some other view with lots going on like standing in the city looking at people.
Step 2 - check save file size.
Step 3 - do nothing else except turn your character to stare at a wall and save the game.
Step 3 - check save file size.

I ask because I'm at 2.11mb when staring at an elevator corner. When staring out the window at the city, the save file jumps 10-20kb.

Not a huge difference, but considering the save file size limit... just something I noticed

does it help to sell items instead of disassembling them?

Also, does it help to just not pick things up at all? I could manage with less loot

that wouldn't really fix this at all, but it still should be done

I'm now worried because my saves are up to 4mb. I've been collecting all the clothes and I've been playing for 60 hours. I don't want to have to delete all the clothes I've collected just because there's an 8mb limit. I guess all I can do for now is keep an eye on the save files and if they get up to 7mb just rename the folder and start a new game where I don't collect clothes and wait until they fix it and I can go back to my old save.

I was about to start playing this game in earnest today but after seeing this I'm going to have to hold off.

I really don't mind sporadic bugs and glitches here and there but something that can actually kill a playthrough is no good. It's a huge buzzkill to constantly worry about and alter your in-game choices to avoid bricking your save.

how much does it increase if you play let's say another 1-2 hours or 5 hours?

I am in Act 2 too, yesterday I have played for several hours, not crafting at all - I've completed one main mission and all availaible gigs and NCPD marks at the moment in West Brook. My save increased from 2,4 MB to almost 3.

i think this bug only happens to those who try to max out as fast as possible.. problem is, original design did not accommodate for such behavior i think.. this is a story driven game, not open world sandbox, so i guess they did not anticipate people doing such things? or maybe they did not caught up item economy issue in time, because thats the main culprit, because it allows you to craft things with infinite material... (you get more material than you put in..)

But of course now, with Youtube full of videos how to get max level, max money etc, everybody jumped at it instead of actually "playing the game" which results in save game file too big due to way too many item IDs saved in save.dat file...

And yes, i know many screams to have this limit of 8MB increased, but guess what, if they double it, there will be still people that overabuse the system and get to 16MB saves eventually... so more complex fix is needed... (something that would purge unused item IDs from the save?)

then you are perfectly fine, because problem starts when its bigger than 7.9MB... Story is not as long as in Witcher 3, you can finish the game without reaching the 8MB save... but you cant craft hundreds of items to max out your stats...

So I played a good hour yesterday after patch 1.05 and only continued playing the story and walking around a bit in the city. After 2 hours, and without picking up any guns or clothing (only some grenades), and not crafting or dissmantling anything, my save went from 2.63kb to 2.719kb.
Could this mean that whatever you do, however you play, at one point you will reach 8mb? At the rate the file is increasing, I would reach that at around 90hrs of gameplay...

This is my understanding too.
I think more or less everything you do is somehow saved. Fast Travel, crafting, summuning the car etc.
