Not sure which game has been the scariest, but for me it would have to be one of several first person games, played alone in a completely dark flat with headphones on. I may scare a bit too easily, but sometimes it's too stressful to play those games in the manner I described. Killing all the lights and using headphones definitely is a key to being scared, and if you're playing a game where you feel like you're the character, and where you get to utilize sounds fully, so you can listen to whether there's someone creeping up behind you, you can definitely lose yourself in the game and sometimes be very scared. Well, I can, at least.

Third person games have rarely been scary, and since they're not first person I rarely play them with headphones on, since you don't really have to hear what the character hears.

Anyways, for me, I guess a good example would be such games as the AvP series, playing as the marine. Then again, I'm a huge Alien/Aliens fan, so I might be a bit biased.

Here's a couple examples from the new Aliens vs Predator game: screenshot1 and screenshot2

Now imagine chains rattling, wind making weird noises, hearing something make a noise in the distance, trying to look out for ventilation shafts and dark corners for anything that might come at you, and trying to keep an eye on the scanner to see if there's any movement. Then suddenly...

Bep-beep. Bep-beep.

"Game over, man! Game over!"

Yep, no contest for me. Games where you have a way to fight back just aren't scary to me.

For me the FEAR games were never scary, i ran through them and meh ...
Amnesia on the other hand was more thrilling because the events didnt feel that predictable and you had no way to fight them bu instead had to flee and hide, not knowing either to survive this or get killed or even die through insanity.

The scariest game i can remember was Cold Fear which is third-person.

Some SCP versions can be slightly shocking to some but it was more kinda like a jump-and-run, you know something is coming but not what and when .. so you still expect it and are thus prepared.

I love horror games, but the ones I find truly scary are the ones that are subtle, that scare you with the unseen. Silent Hill 2 does a brilliant job with that, and so does Scratches. 999 and The Lost Crown are also worth mentioning. Also, The Path, although it is a very open game that lets you interpret things your way, so all the scary stuff is up to the player. Many people just think it 'boring'.

The only 'jump scare' that stuck with me through the years is a scene from Condemned: Criminal Origins, which isn't as scary as it is well-timed and catches you off guard.

As for Amnesia and FEAR, both made me incredibly motion sick within minutes and that makes me angry, and when there's anger there's just no room for fear.

My gawd DOOM 3 scared me in a similar fashion a haunted house would. Ever go to a haunted house attraction during Halloween? That is what it was like for me.

Doom 3 was closer to an action game than a horror game. Things bashed around and made funky noises, but you had a gun, body armor, and direction.

This thread is NOT about horror games it's about the SCARIEST game you've played. Things made freaky noises, (zombies lurking about) the eerie ambient music that played in the background while walking in the dark (sometimes pitch black) and you were forced to lower your gun to use your flashlight. Also things jumped out at you from dark and unexpected places. DOOM 3 hands down scariest game that I've ever played.

Not much scarier then being stuck on a Mars science facility surrounded by zombies, demons and robot experiments. Maybe besides going to hell and dealing with a bunch of hulking baddies.
