Serious Lag Issues while playing Witcher 2

Serious Lag Issues while playing Witcher 2

I bought the Witcher 2 looking for a good RPG and with the latest patch I was amped for it. Didn't play it till patch day and the frame rate was crap. I did the usual stuff, lowered res, put every setting to low or disabled, turned VSYNC on and off. Only got about 10 fps. I have the latest Nvidia Driver installed, (the one promoting BF3), and I uninstalled the 3D driver which improved the performance a bit to around 17-30 FPS.

I can deal with that but now I'm suffering from major lag spikes that brings me down to 3-4 FPS. I'm suspecting a memory leak due to the fact that I'm using over 1GB of memory after a few minutes playing but I have no idea how to fix that if that's the problem.

I also tried this idea, http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/1021185-witcher-2-sli-fix-guide.html
but to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. Here are my specs

Win7
AMD Phenom quad core (can push around 2.2GHZ)
5GB of RAM
Nvidia 9800 GT 512 DDR3

Drop down on your screen resolution and play the game in low specs. I had a lag problem with the ATI Radeon 5450 video card. I purchased a Sapphire Raeeon 5570 which solved the lag problem. I am now running the Witcher 2 in 1600x900 in med specs with no lag at all. Would go higher but like the setting I have.

The Game ist lagging on my System since Patch 2.0 too :(

My Spec:

Q6600 @ 2,4GHZ
4 GB RAM
HD 4850 512 MB

If I run the Game in Low Settings with an Resolution 1280x1024 i get 22 FPS in Foltest Camp.
And if the Framrate is over 30 FPS i get Lags every 3 - 5 sec.

All Drivers are up to date.

Try this:

"Perhaps moving your "User.ini" file which is located in the "Documents/Witcher2/Config" folder, to your desktop and then launch the game might be of help. What will happen is that the game launcher will notice that there's missing a "User.ini" file and will create a new one. In this process some settings which are not visible in the "User.ini" file but which could have been changed with the patch 2.0 by accident might get reset. To then keep your settings such as controls and graphics as well as other settings which you have access to trough menus, simply delete the new "User.ini" file and drag back the old one that you moved to your desktop before. Perhaps it will help."

@Seb_witcher: I have tested it with a clean installation of Windows and a virgin installation of the Witcher 2 :(
But thank you for your try ;)

@fireflies: What kind of Xbox 360 Controller wireless or wire ?

Looks like the game is skipping frames. The only thing I can come to think of that might be of help is to temporarily disable one or two CPU cores since you have a quad-core CPU. The reason why I think it may help is because I get similar frame skipping when I disable Crossfire mode. I have a Core 2 duo 3.0ghz. I read that a possible reason to frame skipping can be that CPU works much faster than the GPU. By disabling a CPU core or two, this could give the GPU more time to cath up with the CPU and possibly solve the issue.

@seb_witcher: I have tried your proposal: No more lag but a framerate under 10 FPS :( (3/2 Cores) Thanx again

No problem, I'll post if I find a solution.

Have you played through the prologue? I had much more framerate problems in the prologure than in Chapter 1.

You could try underclock your CPU just a little and see if that helps, but before you do that make sure it can't harm the CPU. I have limited knowledge about over and underclocking, better be on the safe side.

Just to make sure, have you changed the advanced graphics settings? Ubersampling is very demanding to have enabled and "Texture Memory Size" may also cause some lag.

Check this thread out, especially last post in page 3 and posts in page 4: http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/22972-absolutly-massive-frame-skipping/page__st__40

Good luck

@seb_witcher: Thank you again..

I have tried the fix and it helped to fix the stuttering. But the overall Performance of The Wichter 2 is very Bad. With the other Patches the Game has run @ 1280 x 1024 an HIGH nearly smoothly. Now i get a framerate of 14 - 25 FPS !

It ist like Version 1.0...

That's great, now the performance issue:
Have you tried changing settings in the Ati Catalyst Control Center?
Make sure Anti-aliasing is set to "Use application settings".

@seb_witcher: Everything in the CCC is set to application settings. No Overclocking and no Catalyst AI.

A very funny fact: if i play in 4:3 Mode i get @the Barricade 22 FPS and 16:9 Mode 28 FPS !
