Shelving the Witcher 3 - Until Further Notice.

Im in the same boat as many of you, waiting patiently for a patch to address some issues with the game which prevent me from wanted to play it further. The thought that i could play it in a fixed state has led me to shelf this game and keep a close eye. Once i notice my problems are addressed i will continue my game from where i left off. This is hardly ideal, of course, but it was only a day after 1.04 that i made this decision and as the days go by it gets easier to not feel a nagging itch to play.

Ive already noticed a few of you have decided to shelf the game as well. Im wondering what your reasons were?

These are mine:

-Pre-Rendered/Pre-Staged Cutscene lag (not to be mistaken for performance issues during normal ingame play, incl. cutscenes)
-NPC Pop-in
-Horse walk stuttering/hitching
-Any known bugs in relation to quest completion/xp-gain (none experienced for me, thus far)

Of those listed i am genuinely afraid that the NPC Pop-In issue wont be addressed, for reasons pertaining to their choice of platforms and how they are handling the patches for them, so far. I hope that isnt the case, but if it is then the wait may be a lot longer than i originally anticipated. I may end up waiting for this to be fully patched and then opened up by modders.

The only thing that bothers me about shelving it, other than not being able to play it now, is that i may forget a lot of the story line or quest back-story by the time i feel its well-rounded enough to get into again. Though from past experience i know that ill thank myself for it, when that time comes.

It think its worth it. As no one is disputing how good this game is, myself included. :)

Also, as a footnote. People really need to calm it down. Persistently pushing for issues to be addressed and stuff is a good thing, but some of the moaning is simply not in anyway constructive towards getting a patch released earlier or having something prioritised because it affects you, when there are other more pressing bugs to squash.

I am also waiting for the patch to play on. Mostly the xp stuff. But i'm ok with waiting a few days.

The NPC pop-in doesn't really bother me.
It only seems to affect unimportant background NPCs.
May be a glich in rendering priorities. *shrug*

For example, I recorded myself earlier running through Novigrad and the only NPC's popping in are some of those religious nuts and a guard.

Im hoping you're right, that it is unintended. But judging from the performance that the majority of people on the PC seem to be getting, it seems that they might end up only addressing the NPC pop-in as an after-thought for those who game on PC with high/enthusiast end systems. I would wager its a smaller, less important segment of their customer base for this game.

Another poster in another thread a few days ago said something along the lines of "when Geralt arrives at a town its empty, everyone seems to be hiding from him... and when he leaves its a bustling lively town full of people."

That best sums up why its an important issue for me that needs to be addressed. It killed my first impression of Novigrad, for instance. Whole swaths of it that werent "your meant to look here" areas with scripted NPCs, were empty until one actually stood there.

Its like there are, if you will, primary actors. Those that have scripted animations and are put in a set place, as well as traders. They render fine. At least for me anyway. Its the secondary actors. The dynamic ones, the ones that are to walk around aimlessly. They were put there to make the towns feel more populated and lived in.

These things are as crucial to immersion as tree's and foliage being drawn far, as textures being in high resolution and animation cycles performing correctly (im looking at you horse walk!). Obviously some are more important to others and thats what makes PC gaming great, you can drop what you dont like and put your juice into a post processing effect that you like better (or higher res, whatever). But for me anyway, its the whole picture. And the NPC-Pop in sets it askew.

I feel like a GTX 970 shouldn't perform this poorly, even in Novigrad, I think i'm just simply going to wait until proper patches match with proper drivers..

NPC pop-in will be addressed. it's an LOD issue.

but still, the things you complain about are... rather... trivial...

Its a Level of Detail issue? How so?

From my understanding the Level of Detail has absolutely no bearing on whether a character model is rendered. The Level of Detail pertains to the textures that are applied to said model.

If you have any links to any official mention of that, that'd be great.

EDIT:

I suppose they are so trivial you edited your post so you dont coming off telling me to hang myself?

And of course you are entitled to your opinion. Just as i think the M key binding issue YOU have with this game is equally trivial.
