showstopper: stuck in Cannot Save At This Time

Version: TW2 Enhanced, GOG version, Mac OSX

I'm in the Dungeons of the La Valettes, and I get to the point where Oesterlen goes out and tells the guards that the Witcher has escaped - go get him.
At that point, a message appears saying that the game is being autosaved. Fine so far.

But from then on, I cannot save. Any time I press F5, it says "YOU CANNOT SAVE AT THIS TIME." (See screen shot.) And if I bring up the game menu, the LOAD option is there but no SAVE. It's as if I'm stuck in combat mode, but I'm not in combat.
Even when I play through the rest of the dungeon, go outside and talk to Newboy, the ability to save doesn't come back.

I've tried restoring from earlier saves, back to the final dragon chase scene at the end of Blood of His Blood. But whenever I get to where Oesterlen calls the guards, saving gets disabled again - permanently.

I could keep playing, but I know I'll die eventually, and having to redo hours of gameplay does not appeal to me.
What can I do?

I believe this may actually be normal after that point in the Prologue. Have you tried playing through to the next act (which is very close)? If you continue, you should be able to save, once you reach Act I.

Never mind ... once I got to the riverboat and began the next major section, the ability to save was restored.

Thanks, you were right. That was exactly what I needed to do.
It still doesn't make sense to me that saving is disabled while you're wandering around outside after talking to Newbay, but that's ok.

I'm not sure why they did that either, but I'm very glad it wasn't anything more serious for you. Enjoy the rest of the game!
