So then, mini-games?

Lock-picking, Hacking, Car-Jacking, Gambling...

Lets be fair, all RPGs seem to have a mini-game element. Some of these greatly add to the game and the experience, others are tedious and hamper the game. Some are optional like a game of cards. Some are practically woven into the game like picking a lock.

So what are your opinions? Do you want them? If so what route should they take so that its a fun element and not something that becomes a chore?

What game systems worked for you and what fell flat?

Thanks redge, thought it was odd this wasn't brought up yet. Searched under games and nothing popped up so missed it

mods feel free to lock down

Integrated minigames like picking locks don't really break the feel of the game if done right. Picking locks in Skyrim and Oblivion was done right, hacking computers in Deus Ex: Human Revolution was done semi-right but kinda wrong...Hacking in Fallout 3 was way wrong.

As for diversatory games like cards, dice etc..., they can be there as optional...maybe even have their skills to it (bluffing, gambling, cheating...) and have bonus missions or side story that make partaking in a tournament important (partaking...NOT winning).

Some of the activities listed in the DIversions thread would make good stand alone missions or sidequests, not so much mini-games.
