I'm thinking Saesenthessis or Myrgtabrakke. Though I suspect I'm still on completely the wrong track here.

What is it? A green dragon?

Doesn't ring any bells with anything, I'm getting old.

@Lieste
Your suspicion is correct, the dragons are not what I'm looking for.Still, good guess.

Hints so far:
-It's from a short story
-The subject of the riddle is an object.
-It has something in common with HellKnight's guess.
-Green......?

@mefris I hope I get an answer for this desperate question, it's from The Last Wish or from The Sword of Destiny?

Cheeky, cheeky  I thought I was going to catch you offside with:

..but you changed it at the last second.

You'll find the answer in The Sword Of Destiny :)

The answer is an object @Lieste.

Big Hint:
(I've already given this riddle up when I said the answer can be found in The Sword of Destiny but to be honest I enjoy solving riddles more then I like making them)

The grifin's talons are just out of reach of the objects home.

@mefris I knew it :rofl:

I checked HellKnight answer, he said it was a fountain, and since you said it is related to a short story but from The Sword of Destiny... the only green I came up with is Green Key, the place where Geralt and Istreed would have to fight, and there's a fountain right there.

It's a bit weird, but this is my last card left to play.

You are correct! The answer to my riddle is the Green Key.

Explanation:

In the shadow of a giant it now rests
Along with it's home taken in neglect
~(In the map for the Witcher 1 and 2 the city of Aedd Gynvael (Shard of Ice) was placed in Kaedwen by mistake.Kaedwen is the biggest Kingdom in the north,a giant. Also on the map the Kings themselves look like giants.)~

An emerald made to clear a path,
~(Self explanatory.Hint at it's name)~

Witness to all but one single act.
~(Being the well in the middle of town it would have undoubteldly "witnessed" a lot of things since it's creation. The only thing it doesn't get to witness is the duel between the witcher and Istredd)~

The hints:
-It's from a short story -explained
-The subject of the riddle is an object. -explained
-It has something in common with HellKnight's guess. -The Green Key is a well.Like a fountain a well holds water. Also both the fountain and the well provide a backdrop for an important event.
-Green......? -explained
-The grifin's talons are just out of reach of the object's home. -If you look on the map of the northern Kingdoms (TW2) you'll see that the grifin's talons are just above Aedd Gynvael.

You have the floor Synvael.

@mefris good job with you riddle... that was pretty hard, I have no more strenght, my brain is a mess and I had to get up off my chair to chek the books, dammit *sweats*

So this is a book question, it came up to my mind editing some wiki pages... the answer is not immediate because...there's no clear answer in the books but it is intended, clues here and there.

How did Geralt become a witcher? And why?

From what I understood his mom, Visenna, kinda abandoned him/gave him to the witchers of Kaer Morhen.

Pretty sure he got bitten by a radioactive wolf.

Also, the answer to the previous question was obviously the Green Lantern, mefris just went easy on you.

In the shadow of a giant it now rests
Along with it's home taken in neglect

Batman, obviously. No love for the Green Lantern :(

An emerald made to clear a path,

Green Lantern, duh.

Witness to all but one single act.

Has yet to see a good movie about himself.

Visenna had to give Geralt to Kaer Mohren because he was a child-surprise.

His Mother was bound to give Geralt away before his birth by a vow - this is how all (IIRC) witchers are "found".
They are "Something you have but do not yet know" (this was the line he used for Ciri, translated from czech to english)

He was given by destiny
