As I'm a pretty active member of the Star Citizen community I can answer a lot of questions regarding the trailer.
First off, the game is supposed to be out around 2015. For the current backers there will be a release of the hangar unit, which will allow players to walk around, within and modify their ships. In November there will be a release of the Alpha on the game, a multiplayer dogfighting simulator. In the spring of 2014 they will release a beta version of Squadron 42, the single optional player campaign where a player serves are part of the United Earth Empire (UEE) navy as a fighter pilot.
The game actually is more focused on skill than MMO stats, so for example, the 300i you see there is a fast nimble fighter, but lacks the heavier guns found on the F7A hornet combat fighter, or the RSI Constellation heavy freighter. She can out run and out maneuver ships of the same class, but in comparison will not be able to take the same level of punishment as others may. It's been stated many times that there will not be a "Press button to win" option, and that every encounter will not be based on the D20 damage system, but on players flying and shooting skills.
Part of the way that CIG is planning on producing a revenue stream in game is the ability to buy upgrades for the ships using real money. All parts can be bought with in-game currency, salvaged from derelicts, or looted from destroyed vessels, however they are giving players the options to buy the stock, non-overclocked/modded versions.
@SeamusGod; Did you see the clouds, the pilot not wearing a helmet outside, the contrails off the wing tips and the sonic boom? It was on a planet, next...
