well there's a lot of opinions here. Mine is that if you have the chance to buy it on a fancy box you should buy it that way, because you can claim your GOG backup copy, if you can't then try to look for the best price. As they already said steam has a lot of discounts, for example now you can buy Skyrim at 33% off.
To finish this comment I have to say WELCOME TO THE PC GAMING MEN!!!

Isnt there a expiration on cd-keys for steam versions for the gog backup copy? I think you have to request one some how if you have a steam copy of the game.

No expiration on cd-keys that came with the game .

There is however a time limit of May 17th for those copies of Witcher 2 both physical and digital that came with no cd-key . To request a copy all you need is proof of purchase and then go to
http://www.gog.com/en/witcher2/backup/

And to add to Tommy's post, Steam versions DO come with CD-Keys, they're just a little harder to find. (There's several threads in the Steam forums giving instructions).

So no, there's no deadline.

I go with Gog whenever possible:

-no DRM

-free stuff (we even got a digital update for the new art book which was exclusive on xbox)

-the best customer philosophy a company can have.

And if that's not enough...

Tip: Search on GoG first, if it's not there, THEN you can look at the other websites

GoG is free of DRM of any kind, which says enough for itself, I would get it from there personally.

I am old and like my games to come in a box, with printed manual and installation disks.

I've been playing games since the Atari 2600, and part of me still feels that way. But I've really found in the last couple of years that the convenience of just having everything on your harddrive and not ever having to touch physical media outweighs that. And most manuals these days are a joke anyway.

That is the sad truth. Still, sometimes you might find bargains on DVD for cheaper than their digital counterparts. For example, Steam has Drakensang and Drakensang: River of Time for $19.99 each, while you can get a DVD set on Amazon with both plus the expansion for 12 bucks.

I miss nice colored manuals too, I remember when there used to be little facts or hints about the game in the margins or as notes. There also used to be concept art in some game manuals, things like that would immerse you in the game before you even started playing.

I guess the sad truth is that gamers in general just don't want to read manuals anymore. These days it's seen as a flaw if a game requires a manual and isn't self explanatory.

Probably my favorite manuals in recent years are the Demon's Souls/Dark Souls ones. True to the spirit of the games, they explain absolutely nothing. "Humanity: this displays your current humanity." So what the fuck is "humanity" and what does it do? No explanation. Heh.

Anyway, I got the game from Gog, and I'm sure glad I did. It's nice to, you know, be able to just download the frickin' game and then run it. If you catch my drift.

steam imo is the better choice you can register you game on GOG and get the stuff from there too. Also if you are going to be pc gaming then your steam library will get big in no time, it is probably the best place along with gog to buy your games from. Only 2 places you should be getting pc games from are steam and gog, amazing deals, amazing games, amazing sales. They are basically like your xbox live or psn account but you can download your games on any pc anywhere in the world just by logging into your account.

never use origin.... unless you want to play battlefield 3

I would be highly suspicious of a computer RPG that does NOT need a manual. What kind of role-playing system can you design with that? All that comes to mind is either a space shooter or a cliché-ridden, cavern-crawling hack-n'-slasher :p

I love Steam and use it for just about every game I buy, but in this case GOG is better. GOG is owned by CDPR, so to me there's no reason not to buy it direct. Plus support and patching is better when you buy direct.
