I absolutely disagree. AC III is a great game and for 7 bucks it's a steal. It may not be as good as AC 2 but nevertheless it's really a good and fun game (played it for more than 50 hours).

Each to his own, I found it to be one of the worst games in the past few years with the most THE MOST dumb protagonist, writing and characters in general combined with the very long animation festival they dare to call "combat". Killed the entire series for me.

I only skimmed, but he seemed to be implying that people rush off and play the games that they've just bought.
Do people really do that? I've still got stuff in my backlog from two years ago.

Sure, to each their own. I think AC 3 is better than most of the games of the past few years with a well written main character (easily better than Kenway or Aiden Pierce for example) who sadly most people just don't understand. Combat is almost the same as in AC Brotherhood and Revelations but sure, if you don't like that, the whole series is probably not for you. I personally think that you exaggerate by a great margin... ;)

Imo combat in AC can be much more fun and satisfying that in TW2... :p

@Dragonbird

Nah, he's more writing about hoarding games, building backlogs and how that changes the way we play games. And how Steam sales are not exactly about joy of buying & playing games anymore.

Same here. Except some of the stuff I have, I bought about 4 years ago. He sounds to me like he's just being negative for negative's sake. Fairly common of journalists these days.

For the modest price of 7 bucks you can buy Deus Ex: Director's Cut now, buy it instead of QTE Assasin Soldier Simulator.

Your choice, but my own view is no. I couldn't get interested in the add-ons. (Different protagonists). The Void Walker Arsenal is definitely a waste of money. I got two of the four packs free with the retail version, and they're typical irrelevant content packs. Anyway, if GOTY goes down to 75% later, the two real DLC will probably go down to 66%, so you'll still get them very cheap, and you won't have wasted money if you find you're not interested.

Oops, missed City Trials. It's basically mini-quests/challenges. If you like that kind of thing, then it's maybe the one thing that would justify it.

I have to strenuously disagree. The DLC are so substantive and fun, and add enough content that it's like getting a whole other base game, which intersects with the main game in interesting and subtle ways. I did wish we could play more as Corvo, but they're still absolutely fantastic.

The GOTY is now $10.19. Don't even think, just buy it.

Nope. It already happened.

@Sagitarii
Why playing only one good game if I can play two? I love DX:HR as well. :)

I already have almost any game I'm somehow interested in on Steam (more than 400 in total). I just need more time for playing them all... :p

But I can recommend Deus Ex: HR to every fan of good cyberpunk RPGs and stealth games as well. You can't make anything wrong for the current price.

I stay as far away from steam as possible but every once in a while I'll give in. Dishonored GOTY. Hope it's worth it.

About DXHR: it's fun, but it's more action/stealth than anything else. Very far from RPG but still fun.

Why so? It's as much an RPG as Witcher 2...

Well my backlog has now grown in size . Picked up the Bioshock series , VMTB , Max Payne 3 since I have the 1st two , and a couple I hadn`t heard of but seemed interesting . Betrayer and Demonicon . Oh and E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy and Torchlight 2 so that`s enough considering the GOG summer sale . Now to somehow find the time to play at least some of them .

So, BG2 EE is now at 75%. If you haven't at least the original already YOU.MUST.BUY.THIS.

If there was only one game you - as an RPG fan - should have played in your life it's Baldurs Gate 2. :)

Edit: Also buy Shadowrun: Returns if you haven't already done so. Great turn-based RPG for only a few bucks in the sale.

Without going too deeply into the unanswerable question of what an RPG is or should be, TW2 *is* already an action RPG. But it lets you alter the course of events with your actions, and the world around you changes and responds to your interactions at least in some ways. DXHR is basically an action game where you get to choose mostly inconsequential dialog lines, and sure some people may live or die, but does it matter? Regardless of what you do, you go through the same states and to top it all off, in the end

you even choose an ending by pressing a button!

Both are action oriented games with RPG elements, but at least TW2 has very clear and solid elements. DXHR was fun though, I'll give you that.

You also go through the same states and areas while following the main storyline of BG2. So that's not a proper RPG? ;)

I guess TES is also not an RPG to you. Well, in the end it's just a definition...

I'll put this in a spoiler tag to not divert too much from the thread:

By state I mean a configuration of the world. The state of the world changes constantly in TW2. In BG2 you of course follow the "main storyline" but you can affect the configuration of the world by a series of smaller actions and choices. Your dialog choices can lead to drastically different results and close gameplay opportunities. That's very different. Being a Bioware game BG is actually very full of action. Consider for instance Planescape: Torment. Even your dialog choices and their success are determined by your character's attributes. That's decision making and planning in action, in every level.

And you guessed it. TES (at least Oblivion which I played) is as inconsequential as it gets, to the point where nothing you do actually matters and there is no acknowledgement of your actions whatsoever. Let's not confuse RPG with "a game where you can level up and have numerical attributes".

About BGEE/BG2EE, both are on sale alright but I haven't heard very good things about them. You can get similar graphics with mods, and they're DRM free on GOG.com. It seems like the new content is pretty crappy, but who knows? Has anyone played the EE versions?

Also Shadowrun Returns is on sale. You should get it on GOG or the Humble Store DRM-free instead, but I can recommend it. After the recent updates and the Dragonfall expansion, it turned out to be quite a good cRPG.
