Suggest me an adventure game

Hi Everyone!

After playing through some cool retro “point and click” games (Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis etc.), don't know what I should play next. Could you suggest me some interesting “point and click” (similar to Gray Matter) or other logic games on Xbox Classic and/or Xbox360?

Thank you in advance. :)

Loom is a great, though rather short adventure from Lucas Arts. No idea if you can run it on Xbox (is there a ScummVM port for it?). But you can easily run it on PC or even various mobile devices where ScummVM is ported. It's hard to get it DRM free though except for getting it on e-bay.

You can also try Flight of the Amazon Queen and Beneath A Steel Sky (these games are free software now).

Also, I highly recommend playing the Neverhood. It's hard to get though, try e-bay or Amazon. This will for sure need a PC (works fine in Wine / Linux in Windows 98 mode, some managed to run it on modern Windows as well).

It looks like there is a port of ScummVM for Xbox 360. So search around, this will enable playing many classic adventure games there.

You can also get Goblins series (available on GOG for example). They are playable with ScummVM. And on GOG as an add-on you get the brilliant soundtrack from Charles Callet.

Thank you all for your help! :)

I played those retro games on PC, but I thought I should try some on Xbox too, because Gray Matter was very cool on 360 (and unfortunately my PC cannot handle a lot of modern/latest games). But I will also try these games you guys recommended me on PC, I hope it can run all of them.

Thanks a million!

You gotta love open source projects like ScummVM, which enable you to play games way beyond where their authors ever imagined :)

There are no AAA adventure games anymore, but you can find really good indies. Some worth checking out are The Dream Machine (only first three chapters available) and Deponia (if you can appreciate German humor). The Dream Machine in particular is an excellent adventure game, with a very well written plot and with authentic, traditional stopmotion. It is simply AWESOME! I believe you can run these games on a very, very modest computer.

Telltale makes decent adventure games on a higher budget, most of them 3D. The Sam & Max series is pretty good, though not as much as Sam & Max Hit The Road. First season is pretty good though. I believe most Telltale games are available on the XBox. And then there's Monkey Island, the special editions of the first two might also be available on the XBox.

There are many good old adventure games out there. If you want, tell us your PC specs and maybe we can recommend games from GOG.com (second largest digital distributor, sister company of CD Projekt and all DRM-Free!). You're better off playing classic adventures on the PC, with keyboard and mouse than with a controller. Also, the catalog of PC adventure games is ridiculously large and good.

Ah, there are also King's Quest remakes, for those into the series (though I personally find the series irritating). Here is an example: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/kq3/

One I liked more is Conquests of the Longbow (about Robin Hood). Playable with ScummVM and DosBox.

You guys are great! I cannot thank you enough. :D

Unfortunately I have a very low quality laptop now, thus I cannot play a lot of "modern" games.

Specs:

Processor Speed: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.47 GHz
Memory: 1 GB

Yeah, I know it sucks. :S But at least it can run classic adventures games. By the way, it’s a pity that there are no AAA adventure games anymore, I think Lucas Arts’ games are still the best written adventure games ever made.

Yeah, they are really one of the best. By the way, if you didn't play Loom yet, there was some weird story with its versions. There is one with full voice acting (CD version), but it has some parts of the dialog cut for technical reasons (to be able to fit audio) as well as the close up portraits removed since they had issues with syncing CD audio and lips movement. There is another version for FM Towns computer which has no voice acting but has full dialogs and portraits, so really it's good to play both versions (both are playable in ScummVM). See http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/loom/loom.htm

Broken Sword is quite fun too. It's a point and click game, or rather games. You can check them out at GOG.com. No idea if they exist for Xbox (probably not), but you should be able to run them on the laptop.

Looks like there is some port of DosBox to Xbox, hehe. So DOS versions of Broken Sword might work there (but there can be native ports already). Though I agree with Volsung - it's much easier to play such games on a normal PC with a mouse and keyboard.

With a 1.47 GHz dual core and 1 GB RAM you will be able to run many good old games. You should look into games like Broken Sword 1 through 3, Syberia 1 and 2, The Longest Journey, and so on. You can definitely run older "classic" adventures, like King's/Police/Space Quest, Myst, The Last Express, The 7th Guest, and so on. You may need DOSBox on the computer to run these.

Since you like LucasArts, you should try the special editions of the first two Monkey Islands. And if you can get it, the third. There is a fifth episodic game made by Telltale, but that one will probably not run on your computer. Also from LucasArts, like Gilrond suggested, you should play Loom. And if you haven't, Sam & Max: Hit The Road and Full Throttle. All of these are Scumm games. Non Scumm LucasrArts games include Escape from Monkey Island (aka Monkey 4) and the legendary Grim Fandango. These are tricky to run, but there are patches and launchers that make them work on modern computers.

And just so you know, "Day of the Tentacle", "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" and "Grim Fandango" are some of my favorite games ever.

Edit: The special editions of the first two Monkey Island games will probably not work on your computer, but they're available for Xbox.

Check out Wadget Eye games. They're my favourite point an clicks. Must haves are Primordia, Resonance and the Blackwell bundle.

Also, for something a bit different, i recommend Grey Matter. Great soundtrack, awesome 2.5D art and an endearing main character. The story kept me interested, but i wouldn't say it's story was well written. And, as with most other point and clicks, expect clunky mechanics.

These are for PC, you should be able to run them.
Syberia 1-2 - Incredible atmosphere, interesting story, decent (but not outstanding) gameplay.
Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Silver Earring - I enjoyed it a lot, good story, some good puzzles.
The Gene Machine - Now this one is old and I played it over a decade ago so the only thing I remember is that I liked it.
Return To Mysterious Island - Immersive, some good puzzles, the story keeps you going as far as I remember. The sequel is not that good, though.
Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express - A good detective game.
Tales of Monkey Island - Amusing and engaging story, funny characters and puzzles.

If you like horror games, you should try Scratches: Director's Cut. It's a beautiful and very atmospheric point and click horror adventure that tells the dark history of a haunted house and its former inhabitants. You play as a writer, who bought a Victorian mansion on the outskirts of a small town in the 70s. After moving in, he spends his first day exploring the place and becomes so interested in his mysterious new home's past that instead of working on his upcoming book he keeps searching for its secrets (and soon starts hearing creepy scratching noises from the basement, hence the title).

Another intriguing horror adventure with low system requirements I've recently bought is Dark Fall: Lost Souls. Apparently it's also a quality adventure (and the third game in a trilogy), but it seems really scary and creepy, so maybe it's not what you're looking for. I only played it for a few minutes last night, but if it turns out to be really good, I'll come back to recommend it. :D

Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners of the Earth, it was meant to be a trilogy game but they cancelled it. I played the first though and loved it. Half Adventure - FPS.
