Swordman Build

For my first play through, giving thought to specializing as a pure swordsman.

Say 90% of my skills in this discipline...10% from the magic tree.

Playing on hard with v2.0.

Any thougths/suggestions?

It's easy, just put those 10% into quen.

Yes Quen is the most useful sign in difficult fights, even if your foe is too strong to destroy quen in one blow, that one blow will be absorbed by quen and you'll get a chance to dodge.

I prefer to throw the extra talent points from a swordsman build into Aard. The more I play, the less I use Quen, and the more I use Aard. And you can get area-effect Aard with just two points in the magic tree. You can't beef up Quen, Igni, or Yrden without putting several points into prerequisites.

And for a swordsman, climb that swordsman tree (being sure to pick up Whirl) fast. The Adrenaline-related talents as you approach the top are your friends.

Well in my opinion it depends on your play style and how you utilize signs in different situations for example I find Aard very useful against enemies that block a lot as it's the only sign that can break the blocking stance however there are some enemies who don't use a defensive approach instead they are aggressive and attack you as quickly as possible (eg. Scoia'tael swordsmen) they are fast and very deadly, if you get inside their swinging swords then you are done for (specially on higher difficulties) So I find quen very useful against fast attacking enemies and the fact that its not only a defensive or offensive sign, if you put some points into it then if will give you both defensive and offensive benefits.

However I agree that the more you play the more you get better in combat and you'll feel less need of quen sign. Dodging is your best quen alternative but it takes some time to master.

Aard is also effective against fast, aggressive enemies, because it stops them in their tracks or throws them back, or sets them up for an instant kill. With the second upgrade, you get area effect, which can stop more than one enemy. The combination of dodging and Aard is very useful against dangerous enemies like Scoia'tael patrols in Act I and the assassins on Roche's path.
