Deck building
You can create a deck using the DECK BUILDER available from the CARDS tab in the main menu. You can also edit or delete your existing decks, including the ones you start the game with.
The first thing you need to do when creating a new deck is select a faction. There are five factions in the game and each one plays and feels different.
| Monsters
The world of The Witcher is infested with unspeakable horrors and savage beasts. Most of them are gathered in the fearsome Monsters faction. Driven by their primal instincts, these creatures will do anything to gain more strength, including consuming their own kin.
Nilfgaard
Nilfgaard is a powerful realm in the far south that arose through conquest of nearby kingdoms. More than any other GWENT faction, the Nilfgaardian Empire relies on diplomacy and subterfuge to disrupt enemy strategies and enact its own.
Northern Realms
Representing the combined forces of Temeria, Redania and Kaedwen, the Northern Realms are proud kingdoms, united by their desire for independence. With near unmatched numbers and some of the deadliest engines of war, they are truly a force to be reckoned with.
Scoia'tael
The Scoia'tael are elven and dwarven rebels fighting against the discrimination of non-humans. Their forces are supremely agile, able to outmaneuver their foes on the battlefield and as befits guerilla fighters — they’re masters of ambushes and traps.
Skellige
Skelligers are proud folk, known to have the deepest respect for their long-standing traditions and their fellow clansmen. Their warriors embrace the glory of battle, knowing their priestesses can summon departed heroes from the grave to fight another day, stronger than ever. |
Whether you choose to play as the cunning Nilfgaardian Empire, nightmarish Monsters, proud Skellige, mighty Northern Realms, or shadowy Scoia’tael, you can always create your own playstyle within a faction.
After choosing a faction, you will need to select a leader. At the beginning you will have only 1 leader for each faction. You can unlock more by completing challenges (CHALLENGES can be found in the SINGLEPLAYER tab of the main menu), or by crafting them in the CARD COLLECTION.
Selecting a leader will take you to the deck editor. This is where you’ll be able to add and remove cards to and from your deck. Remember that you can use filters to display the specific cards you're interested in.
Your deck needs to have between 25 and 40 cards in total. You can use any unlocked card from your card collection as long as it belongs to the faction you’re building a deck for, or is a neutral card.
Keep in mind that there are certain requirement for a deck to be valid:
- you can only use up to 4 gold cards in a deck
- you can only use up to 6 silver cards in a deck
- there can only be 1 copy of each gold or silver card in a deck
- you can only use up to 3 copies of a bronze card, even if some have multiple art variants
When creating a deck, try to pick cards that you think will work well together — a good combo increases your chances of defeating an opponent. Plus it feels great when you pull one off!
