Technical community interview with CDPR

The last Kinley's interview with CDPR was a success, however he didn't have a chance to meet actual engine developers like Balázs Török and therefore technical questions remained largely unanswered.

What do you think about compiling a list of technical questions to engine developers of the Witcher 3? If there is no one to conduct it in person, we can just compile a list of questions and present it to CDPR to answer in written form. Your thoughts?

To make it clear, I'm talking about this kind of interview, but with questions from the community.

UPDATE: Actual Q&A are collected here. Developers from CDPR are free to use that pad to answer any questions they are allowed to.

To avoid confusion, please mention in your question what it is about, such as Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, mobile games, general REDengine questions or other technical subjects.

I'm going to make a judgment call that this would be a Good Thing that the forum should support, on one condition:

This thread, the proposed interview questions, and any interview actually conducted as a result, be entirely free of the manner of agenda-pushing, platform arguments, accusations of under-the-table dealings, and PC elitism and brand fanboyism that have damaged other attempts at free and open tech discussion.

Question for the development team:

Background
Usually, a statement of system requirements is by itself too general to indicate which of those requirements is actually limiting. For example, experiments with different graphics cards in TW2 revealed that the output stage of the graphics card was limiting to a degree that any graphics setting, or CPU, RAM, or disk performance were only secondary. A result of this was general confusion over what upgrades to older computers would be suitable for the game, and which newer computers would actually play it well or even meet the minimum requirements.

Question
If you may, without making guesses that aren't warranted at this time, or breaking confidentiality that you need to maintain, please discuss which stages of the graphics pipeline and which components of a typical gaming computer are going to become limiting at "full resolution" (1920x1080) or "high" or "ultra" settings?

I think we also need some input from community managers like @Marcin Momot before proceeding, in order to make sure what CDPR are OK with such thing.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions. Of course, CDPR will have to give consent before the developers actually answer any of them, or before we can even expect answers.

OK, then I started a collaborative pad to collect questions, it's going to be easier than doing it through the forum and then collecting them again in one document.

I'll start with repeating some questions from the previous interview which weren't included. Feel free to add your questions there and discuss them in this thread.

@Guy N'wah: I added your question to the pad, in order to save time for developers to fetch questions from multiple sources.

To everyone else: please add your questions directly to the pad. This thread will be for related discussions.

Excellent idea! In fact, why isn't this thread in the main TW3 section?

I am a layman, so I'm not sure my questions can be called technical. Here they are:

1. Can we expect interior lighting to change? If so, in which direction will you be pushing it? Was ambient occlusion at work in the Gamescom demo interiors?
2. Great as it was, the Gamescom demo featured heavy object, texture and shadow pop in. Can we expect the problem to be mitigated before release? Will high end PCs be able to quench it?
3. Are there any other prominent graphical features still in development? If so which?

Thanks a bunch.

Edit: @Gilrond , done.

@Jupiter on Mars: See above. Please add your questions directly here. This thread is mostly for discussions.

Because it shouldn't be really limited to TW3 and can concern any technical subjects like development of Cyberpunk 2077 and other CDPR projects.

Good idea Gilrond! I might have some questions but they're probably not graphics related.

Have you contacted @Marcin Momot yet? It would be better to get his take on this before we go any further, in my opinion. Maybe he'll have to redirect or restrict questions or set up a format devs are more comfortable with.

Just a suggestion.

Also, realize posting this in General Discussions means a lot less exposure and questions.

I hope @Marcin Momot reads the forum, so as @Guy N'wah noted there is no need to ask about it. But I notified Marcin about the idea just in case. Since the pad is open, developers can answer questions when they will be able to, so I hope there won't be a need to redirect anyone.

I was considering to post this thread in "Community", but decided that "General" is more fitting, since it's about CDPR, while "Community" is for more off-topic subjects. I'm not really after the quantity here, more after the quality :) It doesn't look like there is a lack of exposure judging by the thread views. Technical questions weren't common in Kinley's interview as well if you remember, so I don't really expect a flood of them here.

I'm not that familiar with Pirate Pad but what's stopping me from say impersonating a dev and trolling you? I think devs should answer these questions (if they choose to of course) on the forums so more people see them, not on the pad. Unless I'm missing something.

Not being stupid I guess. If the pad will be trolled, we can change the format. We are not making legal testimonies here, it's a community Q&A. Also, any kind of answers are easily verifiable by double asking CDPR directly. And they also see them, so they can always fix it or expose such trolling.

P = NP? question was removed as off-topic. Please refrain from unrelated subjects. If you want to discuss it, you can open some thread on the forum.

No word from @Marcin Momot so far. May be he is on vacation? Are there any other CDPR representatives here who can be notified about it?

Alright guys - this is a no go at this point - sorry. I'm sure we will be able to conduct the technical Q&A closer to the release date but at this point ti's simply not possible. Apologies.

Or at the very least I bet they can do something like this after the game launches. Right now with all the optimizing and finishing the game, it's probably not the best timing.

No problem. The questions aren't going anywhere so far, so please let us know when it will become possible closer to the release. Thanks for your help!
