Temporary Freezes with 7300 Go

Hi Witchers,I periodically experience freezes, especially in fights and when I use signs. By switching to the desktop and back to the game again I can go on playing, but it sometimes happens quite often, depending on the location. Why could that be? Granjow

Why are you trying to run this game with such a puny video device? Read this: http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=6990.0

Because it is the only PC I can run games on under the week? I know that the 7300 Go is not the best card. But why the freezes?Granjow

TTBOMK, the low end nVIDIA video devices continued to have pixel shader defects from the FX generation debacle on through the 7300s. The 6200 and 7300 cannot resolve the skies in NWN2 unless the game is run inside of a Window. Maybe that will work for this game, but any "300" card really isn't much of a choice for a game like this (better than the 8400 and 2400, but not by much, and neither of those have the shader defect).

Yes, it seems so. What I forgot: The game is still running during a freeze, only the graphics doesn't do anything more, but I can still fight monsters (well, without seeing anything, but it's possible …). Most of the time the freezes occur after the Igni sign, with the other ones I didn't have this problem. What might that be? Granjow

As you probably know, the game does something strange when first started. No matter how slow and old the system, if it starts the game at all, it sets all graphics to HIGH. Have you gone through all of the settings to drop them all to LOW?Resolution doesn't seem to be as influential as other settings, but I think that 800 by 600 is suggested for better cards than that one. What effect did running in a window have?

I did set all settings to low. When I run the game in a window, I don't have the freezes and I can use Igni without any problem. Also the sequence where Geralt kills the
professor
, where it always used to freeze at the very same point, runs through without any problem. What does that mean, that there are no freezes in the window mode?Unfortunately the window looks terribly small on a 1680x1050 monitor … thanks,Granjow

It seems to me that all of your options are used up. You need a different system for this game, or a different, and lower performance, game, for your limited capability video device. When you choose a next game, and later, a next system, pay more attention to the fine print, right?

Seems so, yes …What effect has the window mode then? Why do the freezes disappear there?Granjow

As best I remember, it reduces the demand on the video card somehow, and the slight additional loss of animation speed is part of the process. The same thing works for the 6200, a year older, but with similar problems/ symptoms (although still slower than a 7300 GS or Go 7300 - note that 7400s are the same parts, just a renamed OEM part). The 7300 GT has a different core, based on its Medium performance sibling, the 7600 (and does not suffer from this weakness). For our interested readers, the 7100, 7200, and 7300 LE are worse than the basic 7300 GS by a great deal, sharing the 64 Bit Memory system with the 6200A.

do you actually have the minimum requirements?Read the patch notes I think you'll find your card is not supported -> http://www.thewitcher.com/registration/en/www/patch_notes.htmlYou know you cant really play games of this callabar on a laptop, because the Video RAM is shared with the System RAM and can cause games this intence to screw up ;)

At least twice in the course of the thread's life, the unlikelihood of a good result with a laptop 7300 had already come up.

Thanks for the information! – Maybe it is faster because the Card doesn't have to stretch the image?Granjow
