Been listening to Skyrim's soundtrack while waiting for my copy to arrive from mail.

TW2 anytime
for me the plot, characters and script is most important, of course game play, looks and graphics too but the former more since it forms the heart of any game and clearly TW2 is god in these aspects (the major down part it being very short as all point out, thereby many preferring TW1 and this case Skyrim has that point.
Besides its mostly meaningless comparing it in a forum of dedicated witcher fans mostly who will be biased, few being actually rational. But hey not denying I might not be in that category too, but have good reason and in the end personal liking :p

It makes sense from my point of view -- we probably all have similar tastes so it makes sense to ask here if another game is good. If people here say yes, then I'll probably like it too :p

With Skyrim I'm still on the fence. I've been asking people about it and so far people confirm that the story is still rather lacking in terms of depth and cohesion (I didn't expect Skyrim's story to compete with Witcher, but I was hoping it would at least be a lot better than Oblivion). As far as what I've seen of the gameplay, I'll probably get drawn into the game once I start playing it, but I don't really feel any compulsion to play it right now so I think I'll wait and see if important patches come out before I buy it.

@Ward Dragon
Skyrim is a TES/Bethesda sandbox game and plays like one. Its various quest lines remind me much more of Morrowind than Oblivion, though it retains a few of Oblivion's gameplay conveniences. I think most TES fans would see it as a step in the right direction after the blandness of Oblivion's main quest and Cyrodiil's relatively gentle landscapes. Regardless, there's nothing wrong with playing it later after they've patched it a bit more and the price has dropped a little.

Hi, ive just finished witcher 2 for the second time, played the arena a few times and want to try something else (then come back to witcher 2 probably) and was looking at elder scrolls skyrim, i was wondering if anyone else has played both and can give a basic comparison in gameplay, graphics and relative performance on the same machine
thanks in anticipation

Story vs free roam. Thats all that needs to be said.
Skyrim is much less taxing on your PC, graphically TW2 wins but Skyrim still looks great.

Both are good games. TW2 would so much benefit from Skyrim's interactivity - at least a fraction of it so you could customize the way you want to play more, go whereever you like (within the boundaries of the map - it doesn't have to be a hicking simulator) without silly stuff like locations magically appearing only after you've reached a checkpoint...

On the other hand, Elder Scroll series have been known for meaningless consequences to the choices - which hurt really credibility of the astounding world they strived to create ('Oh supreme lord Archmage, could you please find my lost Alembic... and while we are at it, polish my shoes, boy'). A little wee bit of TW2's recognition of character's achievements would do wonders here.

In my eyes, devs of both series could learn a lot from each other.

...

However, one has to say it - both games have attrocious, consolized interfaces (Skyrim is worse culprit here).

After spending about a week modding and tweaking the game to my liking, I finally started to play it. Four to five hours in game, I lost all interest.

The Witcher 2 is better optimized for the PC hardware tho. Skyrim doesn't support proper multithreading (only 2 CPU threads are used). People (like me) with 4 or more cores in their CPUs won't be able to take full advantage of their rigs. And the game is also very CPU dependent which just makes things worse performance wise.

So yeah. Console centric development & old engine (Skyrim's engine seems to be just an updated version of the old Gamebryo) shows its ugly head in the PC version. Sure the game runs fine, but it could run noticeably better if they'd added a proper multithreading support to the engine.

:/

I managed about 10 hours on Skyrim, now I just can't face it any more. I'm playing Arena, contemplating another playthrough on TW1, hell, I'm even contemplating playing DA2 again.

But on "which is best", it's chocolate vs vodka. They're not substitutes for each other, and don't necessarily mix well either.

Agreed! They may both be considered RPGs but they each cater to a different crowd. Why did you stop playing it? It's unfortunate as I REALLY wanted to like it! I just can't seem to get into the world or the lore, or the characters. It's been the same for many other recent releases.

What kind of multiplayer? If it's co-op (like NWN) it might even work. If it's some awkward player vs player deathmatch mode God help us all.

If you're going to disappoint everyone, might as well let them all be together when you do it.

On topic: this thread is like comparing slutty apples to monogamous oranges. You know, because slutty apples would be free-roam. Both games are good in their own way, which is just about the only thing they have in common.

So where's the sensation, here? BG 1 also had a multiplayer mode. Same with BG 2 and NWN - it's only later on that Bioware resigned form it. Multiplayer alone won't save the game - but it may significantly help it, if singleplayer is godawful (NWN).
