The first Witcher on Mac – Patch 1.6.1 is out

We have just released a new patch for the Mac version of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for OS X version 10.8.1. The update improves overall performance of the game on Mac computers and introduces major improvements to the process of graphics effects rendering. Users who have bought the game on Steam should have the game update automatically, everyone else can find the patch here, along with the full list of changes.
IMPORTANT:The compatibility layer software that our game is using is currently broken under the 10.7.5 update for OS X Lion and 10.8.2 for Mountain Lion, which means that beacause of reasons beyond our control the game doesn't work after the upgrade. We strongly suggest restraining from updating your Macs software to the newest version. We are currently investigating this issue and will inform you once new details become available.

Um, so what you mean to say is

"Don't download our update, because it will break your game"?

It might be better to have that in the FIRST paragraph; some fans may be so excited by the idea of an update that they don't stick around to read the second one. ;)

And there I thought such problems arise mostly on PC with Windows!

No it is not our update breaking the game :)
Problem is with all games for MAC using Wineskin. It's on Wineskin or Apple side. This is quote from wineskin news page: "for now if you want to use Wineskin, do NOT upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8.2. I have not narrowed down the issue, but Apple has totally and thoroughly messed something up that completely breaks anything that seems to be doing a resolutoin change and 3D graphics, or some combo... but basically all games will break. For now just don't upgrade... there is something going on that needs to be narrowed down and Apple needs to fix it."
Wineskin games works fine on OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, Lion 10.7 and Mountain Lion 10.8
We will investigate this issue further and we will do our best to solve it as soon as possible.
For now just do not update your OS X Mountain Lion to 10.8.2 if you want play The Witcher.

Okay, good -- that's clearer!

While we are on the topic, can you please clarify this:

Does the Mac release of the Witcher use the same build as the Windows release, and bug fixes for blank health/toxicity bars are in the custom Wine libraries, or the Witcher build itself is different (i.e. includes those bugs fixes)?

If the later is the case (Witcher build is different), there can be a point for Linux users to get Mac OSX Witcher release in order to be able to play it with Wine without those known bugs. If the former is the case (bug fixes are in Wine), there is no point, except for asking CDPR to release the modified Wine sources (as per requirements of the LGPL). Can you please clarify this?

I'm not familiar with Wineskin on Mac OSX, since I use Wine on Linux, so sorry if I'm asking something obvious.

And a related question, if the user already owns the Windows release (from GOG), should the Mac OSX release be available for free? And if yes, who should be contacted for that?

If I've followed things right wine has now released an update to fix this problem. When are we likely to get an update? I don't really understand how Wine works but think the update has to applied to the game rather than just downloaded?

You have it right. With WINE it seems there are two parts to it, the wrapper (WINE back end) and the engine (involved in the graphics and such). The 1.6.1 update provided a new engine; now they just need the updated wrapper.

I had followed some directions to change the engine earlier, so I updated the game's wrapper but for some reason could still not get the game to play as version 1.6.1. I reverted to 1.6.0 and again updated the wrapper, updating the engine to what I had been using previously, and the game plays. However, I am eagerly awaiting another update so that I can try out the new engine that CD Projekt Red has put out.

It didn't update to 1.6.1 yet. But following instructions to update Wineskine/Wine Engine http://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/s2bqz/howto_update_the_witcher_enhanced_edition_engine/ resolves my problem with Mac OS 10.7.5 update. Maybe it helps someone another.

Any word on when we'll see an official updated wrapper? I'm still getting by with swapping out the wrapper and engine myself (as of chapter II, crashes are now a bit more predictable, happening once every 1-1.5 hours) but I'd really like to try out the new engine that was provided with 1.6.1!

I'm just downloading the game from Steam ... I know there's an easy workaround (I'm a long-time WineSkin user) but I would prefer an official updated wrapper. Please, keep us up-to-date.

Been some months without being able to play.. finally I get my hands on my new Mac and first thing I do is download the Witcher... with the surprise that I can't play... oh bummer!

Well I'll have to wait a bit longer then :S Hope it's not a very long wait.

Please keep us posted and thanks for your hard work.

Cheers!
