The Forlorn Hope: Cyberpunk Off-Topic

+
Had a chance to read Kotaku's recent expose on Anthem's development and boy, was it a sobering read. I don't care about that game specifically, but I used to be a big Bioware fan and was hoping they might turn it around with DA4. Now that looks unlikelier than ever.

Short version is that Anthem, much like Andromeda, spent about five years in pre-development before pressure from EA kicked it into gear about eighteen months before release. Bioware had to scramble to put something together, so preliminary work on DA4 was scrapped and the whole team moved to Anthem. Heavy crunch ensued. There was a lot of infighting and many people left the company. The new iteration of DA4 will use Anthem's engine and be a live service game.

I've mentioned before round these parts that DA:O is what got me into RPGs. I find all of this genuinely sad. And exhausting. Can't help wondering when the death knell will come at last, or if Bioware's zombified corpse will continue to be dangled about unseemly. If people's jobs weren't on the line, I'd hope for the former.

O Captain, my Captain.

I think I read the same article. It talked about the team basically losing all of their Frostbite programmers to the FIFA development teams, constantly needing to redesign levels as flying was added / removed from the game multiple times, and many members of the team 4 years in having absolutely no, clear idea what the game was actually supposed to be until they, themselves, watched the E3 trailer.

Plus, it sounded very grounded to me. Not a rant or attempt to stockpile negative accounts from disgruntled employees. And everything lines up with what the final product exhibits. I can see the same type of thing creating the lack of content and/or polish in ME3's initial release, Andromeda, Battlefront I and II, Battlefield 5 being lackluster, and now Andromeda.

The only recent game that seems to have reached a solid level of success and reception at launch is Apex Legends...the throw-away title that the team was left to develop as they wished. Don't like to speak doom and gloom, but I'm reading the portents...and the portents say...

BioWare is in serious trouble. CDPR had similar issue with TW3 but they pulled off a great game in 3.5 years. Bioware couldn't manage it in 7.

Potentially coming to a real-world future near you, is Human Brain-Cloud Interface.

"Imagine a future technology that would provide instant access to the world's knowledge and artificial intelligence, simply by thinking about a specific topic or question. Communications, education, work, and the world as we know it would be transformed. "

In cyberpunk terms, it's like skill and knowledge chips, but, online. No need to slot something so future-archaic as a chip. Just "google" brain-cloud it.

There's a lot of science-fiction fantasy that's fun, but, just as the original Star Trek flip-phone communicator now looks antiquated and quaint compared to smart phones that are petty much portable super computers we carry around today, some things, like, perhaps, this Human Brain-Cloud Interface could prove quite interesting in unexpected ways.

Of course, the internet can sometimes be blamed for contributing to some people actually being LESS smart than they would have been without it, so, it may also be rather interesting to see how much more "stupid" some folks will be when they can know and understand the width and breadth of complex subjects in seconds, merely by wanting to know it.

:)

THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO START AN ARGUMENT.

What are the psysical/psychological differences between males and females?

For those interested in what the differences are.

Interesting video. And this is especially relevant as we were recently discussing the possibility of having gameplay-related gender differences.

Realism be damned, though, I'd rather there just be no differences between the two from a stat/skill/etc. standpoint. Obviously, the inevitable media poopstorm (justified or not) it would cause is one reason to steer clear. But also, I think it would just be unfun. I generally like to play male characters, and I generally like to play stealthy characters. I have no use for a baked-in strength bonus. To my knowledge, no other modern (or even most older) RPGs do this.

I think the argument could be made for body types, however - the skinnier you are, perhaps the more agile. The bulkier (in terms of muscle), the stronger.

Very, she did her research.
Some of the brain related stuff and the part about how males and females literally see the world differently (different eye structure) was news to me but does explain why we ladies say 'lilac' and men say 'purple'

To my knowledge, no other modern (or even most older) RPGs do this.
None that I'm aware of.

Witcher III level 11 monster was pretty easy I killed it off on level 1
Where did you find a level 11 enemy in White Orchard? The highest level enemies are the hag, a bear, and two ghosts, which all max out around 6-7 IIRC. Then there was the Level 27 Chort if you killed the cows. I don't think it's possible to leave White Orchard at less than level 2 (IIRC the main quest alone gives you more XP than is necessary for that).

There are a few "skull" drowners in White Orchard, near the Nilfgaardian garrison, but only after Vesemir gives Geralt the crossbow. I usually make sure to get the Spoils of War before the drowners spawn, but I've also been known to take the time to slowly kill them with the crossbow. Very, very, very slowly.

I think they're level 11 or so; it's impossible for Geralt to be high enough level for them to lose the skull icon (except maybe if you grind monster nests, nekkers, drowners, and wolves for hours and hours, or of course if you come back later).

https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-sony-next-gen-console/ Sounds pretty cool ...

In case it's TL;DR
  1. Confirmed not being released this year
  2. CPU based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture
  3. GPU is a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, and will support ray tracing
  4. AMD chip also includes a custom unit for 3D audio
  5. Internal SSD that greatly reduces loading times (the example provided was Spider Man ... which took 15 seconds to load a fast travel on PS4 Pro, and .08 seconds on Next Gen PS)
  6. SSD also increases the speed at which the world can be generated on screen while in game
  7. Next-gen console will support 8K graphics (and here I sit content with 1080p)
  8. Cerny claims that the SSD has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD currently available for PCs
  9. Next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won’t be a download-only machine
  10. It’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, and will also be backward-compatible with games for that console
  11. Numerous new games will be cross gen, released for both PS4 and the next-gen console

Pretty impressive. Going up to 8K is rather pointless imo. The backwards compatibility might kill MS if they can't do the same. That's a big selling point.

I would imagine that the Nextbox will basically have the exact same specs (as the launch PS4 and Xbone did) and Microsoft's emulator (for want of a better word) is already adapted for that same hardware framework (x64/x86) so will likey be better than Sony's for a good while.

agreed on 8k though, is kind of a boon doggle for home use. 4k is a lot, and while navi might well be good 4k hardware 8k is going to need a lot of hardware to run.

Good day, people, can you please tell me how to write a letter for CD Projekt Red, do they have a forum or EMail intended for this? There are some good ideas for their games, I want to offer them to the developers or discuss it with them. Thank you in advance.

There are CDPRs official forums. The Reds check it out regularly and post from time to time.

https://forums.cdprojektred.com/index.php?threads/cyberpunk-2077-your-ideas-for-a-dream-rpg.27152/ is the thread they created to share suggestions for Cyberpunk.
