I finished the first episode of
Life Is Strange today and I like it so far. It's probably my favourite episodic adventure game so far, mechanics-wise, because it's so smooth and the time rewind mechanic is a lot of fun to use. You can skip all conversations and cut-scenes you'd already seen, so going through different options doesn't feel slow at all. The entire episode is a bit like a tutorial, because everything is pointed out to you more or less, until the last few minutes when you have to figure things out on your own.
The feel is very... Instagram-y? You know, the combination of that weird nostalgia for times today's teens never lived in, and the modern times. It's very mellow, with sunsets and indie music and slow gameplay, I enjoyed it, although I hope the mood changes in the next episode. Otherwise it will become boring.
The story unravel slowly and you spend most of the time learning about the people from your school (by talking to them and looking around their rooms), there's some typical teen drama and the 'hierarchy' of girls in your dorm is a very cliche one - I really,
really hope they put some kind of a twist to this. Lots of teenagers being teenagers, talking about getting blazed and
hella tripping out.
There is an indicator for choices that affect your game and all of them are listed in the end (along with the choice you did not make). The one about watering your plant is making rounds on the Internet already, but I promise the others make more sense.
In conclusion - very pretty, dreamy-looking game that will take you right back to college to remind you why you should be happy to be an adult, interesting mechanics, promising story. But as with all choice games, only time will tell if it's worth it.
