MS bought inXile as well (in addition to Obsidian). Quite disgusting news. MS keeps swallowing good gaming studios that support DRM-free and Linux gaming. And we all know what to expect from MS in regards to that.

Yeah, InXile too. The RPG market just lost two studios into the M$ abyss.

Not just RPG, but DRM-free and Linux market as well.

Check this out: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2018/11/10/obsidian-inxile-join-microsoft-studios/

As part of our commitment to bringing a steady stream of new, exclusive games to our fans, I’m excited to announce Microsoft’s intent to acquire two new game development studios – Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment.
<...>
We’re focused on implementing new Microsoft technologies, delivering content for new platforms and services like Xbox Game Pass, and creating exclusive games that turn players into loyal Xbox fans.

I.e. expect more exclusives and more MS lock-in and DRM, all in order to "turn players into loyal Xbox fans". Farewell inXile and Obsidian. You will be remembered.

Brian Fargo: "I can understand the natural skepticism of seeing small companies bought, we've all seen some subsequently dismantled after. Our deal with Microsoft allows InXile to grow and dream like never before. This is a wonderful thing for our future."

His plans originally were to retire after Wasteland 3. It's been a real challenge for these guys, despite their quality.

Obsidian nearly went under and only survived because PoE sold well. Which did not happen for PoE Deadfire. It's been a huge struggle for them to stay in business. It's all well and good to say second coming of RPGs, but the people that make them don't know if they have jobs the next quarter.

For the people working there, I am glad they have work this season and next year, as opposed to not. And as opposed to us not having an Obsidian or InXile at all. As a frequent backer of both, this is good-ish news.

I am not so selfish I would rather have these companies perish instead.

They also said this:

We're keeping our backer commitments for BT4 and WL3. Beyond that, it's hard to say. It's still very early in this new relationship.

I'd say paired with the very clear press release from the Xbox execs, we won't see any DRM-free and Linux releases from them anymore. So while the companies might feel like they secured their finances, for many of their backers they as if don't exit at all now.

Looks like this guy was right after all. He told them right away they need to use the publishers:

The best and smartest thing Microsoft could do is let Obsidian and inXile do their thing and put some money into advertising. Deadfire didn't sell so well probably in part because they used Fig instead of Kickstarter, and weren't featured in any major outlet (as far as I know)... so it was probably only PoE fans that supported and bought the game. I read several comments about people who didn't even know PoE 2 existed until this thing happened.

Regarding the exclusive content, maybe they'll just release some XBox games in addition to cRPG's but it would be a terrible idea to not release proper cRPG's on the computer. Maybe Obsidian will focus more on 3D, action oriented games like Alpha Protocol, but I truly hope they will also continue to produce quality cRPG's.

There's just too much uncertainty at this point. I am hopeful that younger execs are less close-minded to things like DRM-free games and Linux. Look at what happened with Disney and LucasArts, they didn't pull their games from GOG and instead more came out, like Escape from Monkey Island. All we can do is wait and hope that people like Brian Fargo can negotiate well, for the sake of us cRPG fans.

See at 4:18:

"Some of the teams are going to have games that will come out soon and have some things in the works, but mostly we feel really set up to give our fans new exclusive games for Xbox and a great pipeline of new things going into Game Pass".

MS just can't stop being MS. Exclusive games for Xbox, and worse than DRM "game streaming" idea (Game Pass).

A new AAA dark Fantasy Rpg or Science fiction RPG from Obsidian would be a Dream for me:oops:

I mean, this is the time when they have to pretend to like each other and act all "happy" and "excited" about the "amazing" thing M$ did for them. They just have to say this shit. However, feeling really "set up" to release XBox exclusives doesn't mean they will do it, they are just saying they "feel" like they could ;)

Tyranny.

but if you mean new new, and by AAA you mean a generic, "cinematic" action game that pretends to be an RPG, then you might get lucky. Might be an XBox exclusive though...

My dream Rpg would look like this:
01. Non-linear Story with multiple Ends
02. Quests with Choices
03. Dialogue System (With social skills)
04. Character Editor (Male/Female) Backgroundstories
05. Interesting Characters/Romances
06. The World/Atmosphere: Dirty, Cold and Gloomy
07. Soundtrack: Similar to Witcher
08. Combat System: A mix of Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma
09. Weapons: Shield, One-Hand Sword, Axe, Dagger, Longsword, Battle Axe, Spear, Bow etc.
10. Attributes: Constitution, Endurance, Willpower, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Resistance, Speed, Charisma, Luck
11. Skills/Perk: Two-Handed, Weapon and Shield, Dual Wielding, Bow, Speech, Lockpicking, Sneak, Alchemy ect.
12. Perspective: Third Person.

Guys, I've played my first hour in The Witcher 3... and... holy moly. Definitely one of my favorite games already. I haven't played the first two games, tho... friends said to me that I should not be worried about the story, cause they''re not connected in a fundamental way. But how can I possibly know.
Anyways, the graphics are bruttish... it's more beautiful than the real life :D
The music, the story, the atmosphere... everything is on the top!
The gameplay and the controls.. well, it could've been better, but who am I to judge :)

If it's between going under or signing with MS, the choice seems simple to me. I'm sure that's the end of any DRM free releases from them though.

I don't think they were going under, but MS provides them stability. It's too bad medium sized independent studios can't avoid being bought it seems.

Enjoy! I'm planning to continue my first playthrough of TW3 as well soon (I paused it in early quests in Velen), after I'll finish Shadow Warrior 2. I started TW2 in Wine on Linux a while ago, but after White Orchard it had too many graphical problems, and only very recently Wine together with dxvk enabled playing it with perfect rendering on Linux.

By the way, I highly recommend you playing first two Witcher games as well. They are great.

Just finished Shadow Warrior 2. The ending was somewhat confusing. I didn't really understand what happened there. The final battle song by Stan Bush was a nice touch. :)

Though for some reason they didn't include it in the soundtrack bundle on GOG.

It took me several years to get into Dark Souls. Now, I keep going back. Great way to go through controllers, too. Keeping that industry alive.

Currently installing the 2005 game Need for Speed: Most Wanted from its DVD-ROM. I just hope it can actually run.
I don't know how many hours I've played the game on the Xbox, but it's in the triple-digits. Would be awesome to get it to run on my PC. :D

Edit: YES!! It works just fine. Not quite 1920x1080, but the resolution settings went surprisingly high.
