The General Videogame Thread

I dunno. I usually like space games, but this one seems... . Well I'm not quite sure what it seems. What is the gameplay? Build a spaceship and travel somewhere? Realistically in which case you'll spend a year of gametime getting to Mars, or with some sort of fantasy warp drive? Or is it building a space station and trying to make it viable? With what resources? And other than playing Minesweeper, what is the gameplay loop like between building the station and rebuilding it after an asteroid hit?

Lots of unknowns. Visually it looks good, but I need to see a lot more about it.
Clearly, it's a tease rather than a reveal. My guess is they're being intentionally cryptic.

My interest is more because of Valheim, knowing what the creators did and what it eventually became. Their vision was incredible. I've played all sorts of games like Minecraft, Terraria, Starship EVO, Avorion, ARK, Green Hell, etc. All of them had really cool things they did in surprising ways. This is, of course, largely personal preference, but none of them managed to create the constant sense of, "That is so cool!" that Valheim did. Every time you think you've seen what's basically possible or what the mechanics are, the game introduces some new area or mechanic that puts a new spin on everything.

It's not perfect, but it's endlessly awesome. I am very intrigued to see what those minds came up with next.

What is the gameplay?
Reading the Steam page... It kind of sounds like No Mans Sky, only without the landing on planets (It's on their wishlist to let you land your ship onto planets and explore them with vehicles, but is not yet a thing)

You build a spaceship to fly randomly around a procedurally generated space so you can... Build a spaceship and fly around in space....
Build a spaceship and travel somewhere?
Essentially yes.

Though how much focus is on "Build your perfect spaceship (And micromanage EVERYTHING including producing spin to create artificial gravity...)" and how much is on "Go look at cool planets" is yet to be seen.

A lot of the emphasis seems to be getting put onto how much you have to do in building a spaceship, so it seems like that is the primary gameplay loop.
Realistically in which case you'll spend a year of gametime getting to Mars, or with some sort of fantasy warp drive?
They seem to be taking a more realistic route. Though there's "Cryo Sleep" to fast forward time (With the caveat of potential asteroid strikes wrecking your ship while you're frozen...)
Or is it building a space station and trying to make it viable? With what resources?
Seemingly the resources are gathered from wrecked ships. Also, Farm Sim for food (And oxygen). Literally, a key point they make is having to tend to your greenhouse as the primary way to fill the food/oxygen needs.

With potential resources from sending probes to planets.

At the end of the day, it's not my cup of tea.

I really can't get into survival sim games where the only goal is to survive to survive. The appeal of "Authentic Astronaut Experience" doesn't grab me either (Much why I don't care for things like NMS or Kerbal Space Program)

This.

I have 1339 hours in Valheim at this point, so one could say that I like the game :D

I see this situation as Witcher - Cyberpunk comparison. Witcher is my one and only true love, so I gave a chance to Cyberpunk, which is (in every way) very far from any of my points of interest. I still liked Cyberpunk a lot and enjoyed it. It was made by a great studio.

Basically, nobody with an established reputation wants to have to compete with BG3.
To be honest it's probably more like "Nobody with an established reputation wants to work with WotC/Hasbro"

Which is why there are so few other D&D games being worked on, not just Baldur's Gate.

It's a very popular IP, but the owner companies are... Not the best to work with...

I don't really buy the excuse of "Not wanting to compete with BG3"

Since that doesn't really make sense. BG4 isn't competing with BG3 because BG3 was made and released years ago. Pretty much everyone who wants to play BG3 has already bought it.

Now, it might get COMPARED to BG3... But not only does that not do anything (People will buy BG4 based on its own merits, not "It's X compared to BG3") but that is the case for ANY game with any similarity to BG3. Any fantasy RPG, CRPG, turn based RPG... Will all be compared to BG3 (As well as every other noteworthy title like Expedition 33)

An example in regards to the impact of comparisons:

Was Mass Effect 3 as good as Mass Effect 1 & 2? No. Did it sell well? Yes. Why? Because it was good enough in its own right to sell well.

Was Mass Effect: Andromeda as good as Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3? No. Did it sell well? No. Why? Because it was a pile of poop.

Being compared to good games doesn't cause failures. Being a bad game does.

Interesting article on why, despite Wizard's declared intention to make Baldur's Gate 4, it might not be happening any time soon. Basically, nobody with an established reputation wants to have to compete with BG3.
Yeah, not sure which studio would be qualified to developpe BG4 knowing how high Larian set the bar... Honestly I don't see any :D

Seems pretty cool. Unfortunately for me, only on PC Windows :)

It's a really interesting concept. Cyberpunk life simulator of sorts. But September? Oh my gosh. Almost everything not named GTA 6 is coming out in September. It's an overcrowded space to be competing in.

Yeah, September this year and February 2027 are overcrowded, it's crazy. Since I won't play GTA 6, I will have plenty of time to play september games before February :D

So... Obsidian recently got given the Fallout IP to work on. With the director and lead writer for New Vegas returning to the studio.

Will be interesting to see how that works out for Fallout 5.

I'm a little hesitant given how Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 turned out. But hopefully we get some of that NV magic back into the series.

Avowed's sequel got cancelled amidst the recent layoffs. Which is fine by me if it was going to be like the first title. Though I'm still hoping to get Pillars of Eternity 3 someday. Too bad BG3 hasn't given Microsoft the confidence to let it get made yet... Not sure if any other CRPG's will do well enough to give them the nudge (Especially during the current climate at Xbox studios with all the layoffs and game cancellations...)

I'm happy to hear this. Obsidian games are very enjoyable if they never really hit the "Amazing!" category.

Plus, I really like Avowed. It's no blockbuster, but the gameplay is quite fun. The story is also interesting even if the delivery is pretty flat: perhaps too ontological for its own good, especially considering how many players won't go into it with knowledge of the prior games.

So even more Fallout news:

Bethesda have announced a roadmap that includes FO3 Remaster, FONV Remaster and Fallout 5 (Not the same as the Fallout game that Obsidian is making).

Wonder how these will turn out.

Oblivion Remaster initially got praised, but eventually opinions soured given some changes (I.e. Changing the colour palette, changing VA's and making the fantastical areas more "Realistic" and boring, not to mention some character redesigns being radically different for no reason). As well as the lack of modding compatibility (Ironic given the critical nature of such things to make Bethesda games playable, let alone good)

So the FO3 and NV remasters are keeping people cautious about how they will turn out...

Of course, we don't know the dates involved on this roadmap. I mean, we're still waiting like 8 years later after Elder Scrolls 6 announcement to see literally anything from that... This road map might span the next 100 years at their rate of development...

FONV remaster? Bethesda is doing that instead of Obsidian? Or is Obsidian doing a FONV remaster, and a new game as well? I don't have any interest in a FO3 remake, but a FONV remaster would be high on my list.

Bethesda is handling the NV remaster, not Obsidian.

However, given that they gave the Oblivion remaster to Virtuous Studio to actually make it, it's quite possible that Bethesda themselves won't be making FO3/NV remasters.

This is even more likely for NV, as Bethesda (And Todd Howard) absolutely hate NV (Which is unsurprising given that it was made in a few months on a shoestring budget and has mogged every Bethesda Fallout title to date).
