Has anyone noticed how PC exclusives look great and normally don't have insane system requirements?

Yep. Although after viewing a few vids it's clearly not a graphical powerhouse. In fact, the environments look pretty sparse. It might be alpha footage though. I hope they have some missions over towns and cities. Still stoked about it. I've played another title in the series and it was pretty good, and we get precious few PC exclusives these days.

Depends. Doom 3 and Crysis had insane system requirements.

Star Citizen will be the same and I hope Doom 4 will be too.

Doom 3 didn't have insane requirements. I remember it running very well on my mid range computer back in 2006. Crysis is a different story altogether. Delegating performance on the hardware instead of efficient programming is an industry vice.

Why would you hope that Star Citizen and Doom 4 have high system requirements? That has nothing to do with game quality or even visual quality. Using top tier hardware efficiently is not the same as requiring it to be playable.

Edit: Just looked up Star Citizen´s expected system requirements. They say 8 GB RAM and a GTX 770 will be barely enough for medium settings. And a GTX 880 to run "fluently". Have they tested an 880 themselves? All this speculation is seriously annoying. I feel like PC gamers like hearing games are demanding so they can justify the thousands of dollars they spend on top of the line gaming PC's that are, in reality, underused most of the time. It's more about validating their shopping habits.

In any case, by the time the game comes out I'm sure most gaming PC's will have at least 8 GB's of RAM, decent multi-core CPU's and a GTX 770 or equivalent.

I'm all for maximizing hardware utilization, there's a reason why we buy it. But let's be honest too: most of the time there really is no reason for games to be so demanding. Look at The Witcher 2, for example. Back in 2011 you needed a powerful PC to run max it, but ultra minus ubersampling required only a high-range PC and not an ultra-high range. I'm saying an i5 or AMD equivalent with a GTX 560 Ti would achieve excellent performance, without a pair of 580's and the most expensive i7 out there. And on medium settings, a really average gaming PC would run TW2 fluently. And remember back then it was (and still is IMO) one of the best looking games available. In any case TW2 did the right thing: drive your hardware to the maximum and look the best it can, not demand insane requirements so it can run and be barely playable.

actually, doom 3 did have insane requirements when it first came out. a lot of people struggled to run it even on low setting. and please explain this quote:

Delegating performance on the hardware instead of efficient programming is an industry vice.

where do you think "efficient programming" is offloading all calculations to?

and witcher 2 didn't do anything differently. you said it needed high end hardware to run at max, but ran well on medium setting with most eye candy toggled off, what makes you think star citizens wouldn't have similar hardware scaling?

star citizen's requirements look like what would have been a top end system in 2012. today, that's approaching mid range. so it was an appropriate estimate.

Breaking News: After the King.com Candy Crush Saga vs Stoic's Banner Saga lawsuit for using "Saga", the denim brand Diesel tries for yet another world record for "Most Stupid Copyright Lawsuit Of All Times" by filing against Black Forest Games' Dieselstörmers.

Programming doesn't offload calculations, it designs efficient ways to solve them. I'm talking about the convenience of a simple but computationally complex algorithm vs. the time required to properly understand or design a complicated but efficient method. Delegating performance on the hardware in this case means using eg. brute force with the expectation that fast enough hardware will cover up for it, and somewhere down the road mid range systems will catch up.

That's actually a joke in program optimization. Wait a few years or until a couple of CPU generations have passed and deliver the exact same code. It'll be faster on faster hardware.

Considering modern industry practices I'm not surprised they barely have time to debug.

I've been playing more Mount and Blade: Warband. Look how much territory The Kingdom of Nords (who i'm fighting for) have captured!
View attachment 4997

Both the Kingdom of Swadia and Kingdom of Vaegirs have long since collapsed and I'm wondering who I'm going to end up fighting next....

I am playing SPEHS MAHREENZ. I missed all the GREAT combat sounds in this game, a reminder to everyone that sound is crucial to satisfying combat and I certainly feel satisfied everytime I deliver a crushing blow to a bastard orc!

I never realized before that this game looks pretty damn good

Random little WebM as well...

Does anyone remember a video review of the Witcher series (games), where the reviewer was discussing them from perspective of the literary realism? I can't find it, since I don't remember the title.

You probably mean MrBTongue, he's no reviewer

Just a person who likes to talk about certain aspects of videogames and he surely knows what he's talking about.

Popped over to GOG to Trine the other day when I noticed a curious game on my shelf. "Hmmm, why hello there Torchlight," I said. Torhclight smiled, a sad smile, still hurt at being left at home while I abandoned it to stop Irenicus, slay dragons and rid the world of Bhaalspawn. "Trine can wait until another sale," says I, "its time to duuuuunnngeeeoooonn craaawwwwlllll!!!".

Torchlight Diablo III: Warcraft is freaking awesome and runs magically on Wine. What it lacks in story, characters and setting it makes up for in the character creation department. Lets be honest, the combat and stats department far out weigh even a good story in a ARPG :yes A Destroyer, a barbarian looking class, can be built as a mage, ranger, two weapon fighter, 2-handed weapon fighter, spirit summoner, and a others. The same is true for the other classes. Yes, there are only 3 classes but the variants make up for it. There are some shared skills, mostly passive abilities, but there is enough unique abilities to make a dual axe wielding Vanquisher (Assassin type character) feel different from a dual axe wielding Destroyer (Barbarian). Its incredible and very fun :D
And most importantly :p the gear looks amazing, and the elemental weapons are complete with animations :yes

Unfortunately, the boss fights so far on the hardest difficulty level not as memorable or difficult as they were in Diablo or Diablo II. Surely this will change :)

Also of note the default key bindings are a load of donkey butt, but thankfully there are mods for that.

@Csàszàr, I read in your character creation thread that you played the Destiny Beta. I played a bit of it too, but I got it close to its end, so I couldn´t play as much as I wanted (got to lvl 4).
Did you get to try everything it offered? From the little I got to play, it seemed interesting...

So Sacred 3's looking a bit pants apparently, guess it's up to the original Ascaron lads and lasses who are making that Unbended game to keep the fire burning.

I'd like to see a game in the spirit of the first one, but with a little more thought put into the quests. I really was impressed with how they crafted the world. The environments were fun to explore. I've never been such a clepto. almost every damn building you can go in. The classes were much better than the sequel as well.
