Finally bought Civ 5. It's on sale. I read a comment that it's not worth much without DLCs.

Agreed? If so, what DLCs should I get, while the sale is there?

If you're talking about the two expansion packs, yes, get them. The game's playable in vanilla, but a lot better with one or both of the expansions. The other, smaller DLC isn't worth it.

If there's a big price difference I'd recommend getting Gods & Kings, and then getting Brave New World later when you're tired of G&K. If you get both as a bundle, I'd recommend only installing G&K at first.

G&K fixed most of the flaws in the original game, turned it into a pretty good game for both a Domination and a Science victory, with some interesting ways of playing for a Cultural victory. Diplomatic Victory sucked in both vanilla and G&K.

Brave New World changes the game a lot, some of it for the better, but a lot of it was just different, which makes it a relatively low-cost way of getting a lot of extra play from the game. It made both Cultural and Diplomatic a lot more interesting to play, Science stays much the same, and Domination became a little harder, which adds to the challenge when you're used to the game.

Sale where? Steam? Is Civ V Steam only?

Edit: well apparently AoW 3 is 50% on Steam! Come on GOG!

Rant time.

After several weeks of not being able to play much because of PC issues, I finally made a serious attempt to play the BI: Burial at Sea DLC's today. It has to be the most frustrating experience ever. I've decided I absolutely HATE games that decide that the best way to make it challenging is to make ammo and whatever-you-need-to-do-magic in short supply. When you combine that with a lousy checkpoint-save system, all that you get is this incredibly boring and repetitive grind of "scavenge, try to find a way to sneak past the bad guys with only 4 bullets and 2 plasmid-shots without dying, go back and do it again".

I'm seriously thinking of dropping to the easiest mode and just concentrating on the story.

Checkpoint saving only. In the main game, I rarely found it a serious problem. But for some reason having to repeat a combat section is more palatable than having to repeat 10 minutes of scrabbling around to find enough money to buy enough ammo to get through the next fight.

You can just let the game bring you back to life after dying, but that costs you in money, which you desperately need, and you still need to get through the fight with even less plasmids/ammo than the first time.

I think this trailer is symbolising how long the game has been made, thus travelling in a car while constantly complaining.

It looks pretty cool and according to it's producer there is a chance they willl release it on PC. The fact that they are releasing FFXIII on Steam seems to support it.

I may have already purchased the game. And then expansion 1.

And then expansion two.

Separately.

Not my brightest moment, I know.

They can complain in this car all they want if story will be better than XIII. They will do it in Japanese too if I ever buy this game. (which seems pretty tempting right now).

Very interesting, but why does it have to be Steam only? Arrrgh! At least it is multiplatform.

I know, sale and all, but how is it an expansion like "Gods and Kings" costs AS MUCH as the original game ($29.99)? Is it a standalone expansion of roughly the same hours and quality of gameplay? Seems ridiculous for an add-on.

Anyway. I've got my hands full with other important stuff (such as other games). Do you think this is worth buying now and saving for later?

Edit: too late anyway, seems like the sale is over.

I got the got the game pretty cheap along with XCOM over the summer. I resisted due to the Steam only crap but great looking multi-platform games at very good prices won me over. I highly, highly recommend Civilization 5, with the expansions. Its an excellent game. If you aren't sure it will probably drop in price again with the Winter sales and when the New Civ game comes out----which is probably best avoided until its expansions come out :p

I love to play as Morocco or Saudi Arabia, building an empire of trading and growing through wealth and spreading culture rather than military might. However, you need the expansions to fully appreciate this game style which does suck :( building an empire of trade routes and sharing and selling my goods.

I really like this review on the Steam store page:
> build the Great Wall of Portugal
> lose the nuclear arms race to Gandhi
> bring the tenets of Judaism to every corner of Germany
> construct the Great Pyramids of Honolulu
> make Ethiopia the most well fed civilization in the world
> share your Crabs with friends to make them happy

10/10, would give Crabs to Queen Isabella again.
